What is the reasoning behind the name of the Guinea pig? It is not from Guinea, nor is it a pig.

Because they are a domesticated species and quite useful as experimental animals.
Or because they were fat rodents from far away.
Or because some merchant selling them as pets thought it sounded better than "tribbles".
