Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Arabic instrument the name of which comes from a word meaning 'wood'?

Answer: Ud

The Arab instrument in question is al-ud, a word that literally means a 'twig of wood'. The ud is very similar to what we now call a lute. Indeed, the lute is believed to derive ultimately from the ud.
2. In European history, this was a cavalryman who held a lance. Name this dangerous fellow.

Answer: Uhlan

The word 'uhlan' comes ultimately from the Turkish 'oghlan', which means 'youth'. The Polish borrowed the term, making it '(h)ulan', from whence it came into French and German as 'uhlan'.
3. What type of creature is a Uakari?

Answer: Monkey

The uakari, or cacajou, comes in white, red and black varieties. If you want to witness a lovely little uakari in the wild, you will have to go to Brazil, Peru or Colombia. But be careful if you see one...this animal is endangered.
4. There are many odd terms describing various marks, blemishes and other oddities of the human body. What type of deformity is described by the term 'uloid'?

Answer: Scar

The word 'uloid' (or 'ouloid') is an adjective that means 'scarlike'. An antiquated term, it is probably derived from the Greek word for 'scar'.
5. If you encounter the two-word phrase 'ultima Thule' in a book you are reading, you may be curious as to its meaning. Which of the following best describes this phrase?

Answer: World's end

In ancient Greek and Roman times it was believed that the northernmost country on Earth was called 'Thule', and hence attached to this name was the prefix 'ultima' (meaning 'furthest'). Ultima Thule literally came to mean the most distant region or place on Earth.

We have reached the ultima Thule of this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it and will play some of my other stuff.
