Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many people are mentioned by name in the genealogy found in Matthew 1 in the NIV Bible?

Answer: 47

The genealogy covers 41 generations from Abraham to Jesus. It also mentions six others by name: Judah's son Perez's brother Zerah, Perez's mother Tamar, Boaz's mother Rahab, Boaz's wife Ruth, Solomon's mother's first husband Uriah, and Mary the mother of Jesus. That's 41 generations plus six others making 47 all together. The genealogy can be found in Matthew 1:1-16.
2. Did the Magi return to their home country by the same route they came in by?

Answer: No

On the way to see Jesus, the Magi stopped in Jerusalem and spoke with Herod. Herod told them to bring news of the baby to him so he could go worship him himself. He was going to use the information they brought back to find and kill Jesus. But before they made the return journey to their home town they were warned in a dream by angels not to go through Jerusalem on their way home, so they took a different route.

This can be found in Matthew 2:1-12 of the NIV Bible.
3. What was John the Baptist's belt made out of?

Answer: Leather

Matthew 3 starts with telling about John the Baptist and his ministry. It says that he was sent to prepare the way for the LORD as was prophesied by the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 40:3 of the NIV Bible: "A voice of one calling in the desert 'Prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God'".

It says that his clothes were made of camel hair and he had a leather belt. People would come and hear him preach, then they'd confess their sins and he would baptize them in the Jordan river.
4. John the Baptist tells the Pharisees about the fate of a tree that doesn't produce good fruit. What is that fate?

Answer: It will be burned

This can be found in Matthew 3. John tells the Pharisees that the ax is already at the foot of the tree and, if it doesn't produce fruit, it will be cut down and burned. One standard reading of this text is that the tree represents people; if they don't live the life God wants, producing good fruit, they will be cut down and thrown in the lake of fire, which is hell.
5. True or False: James and John were on the shore of the Jordan river preparing their nets when Jesus called them.

Answer: False

Matthew 4:21-22 says that after Jesus called Peter and Andrew by the Sea of Galilee, he went on and saw James and John in a boat with their father Zebedee preparing their fishing nets. He called them and they left their father and followed him.

There are two things that are false in that sentence. First, they were in a boat, not on the shore. Second, they were on the Sea of Galilee, not the Jordan River.
6. Complete the verse from Matthew 5:11 of the NIV Bible: "___ are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me."

Answer: Blessed

This is usually interpreted to mean that Christians will be blessed when they are persecuted because of what they believe. The lesson is that a reward will come if someone does what God wants him or her to do, no matter the price at the time. This verse is part of the beatitudes found in Matthew 5.
7. What does Jesus say he does not come to abolish in Matthew 5:17 of the NIV Bible?

Answer: The laws and the prophets

He told his disciples that he didn't come to say "That law is completely wrong, and the prophets shouldn't have said that." or "That prophecy doesn't matter anymore, and I've come to erase it.". Instead he says he came to fulfill those prophecies and fill in the gaps in what was written in the Old Testament. This can be found in Matthew 5:17.
8. Where does Jesus say his followers should pray in Matthew 6:6 of the NIV Bible?

Answer: In a quiet room

He said his followers shouldn't use prayer as a way of showing off their "skills". Instead, a prayer to God should be private and a personal thing between an individual and God. One ought to go to a private room and pray there. That can be found in Matthew 6.
9. Who does Jesus say was not as well clothed as a lily in Matthew 6:28-29 of the NIV Bible?

Answer: Solomon

Solomon was an ancient king of Israel. God offered him anything he wanted to ask for. When he could have asked for wealth and fame, he instead asked for wisdom to make the right choices. Because of this God blessed him with the wisdom and the fame and wealth (1 Kings 3).

He was very wise and very wealthy. God was saying that even the lilies were better clothed than Solomon. And if God clothed the lilies who were here today and tomorrow were gone, would he not do the same for people? He said this in Matthew 6.
10. Who did Jesus tell his disciples to watch out for in Matthew 7:15 of the NIV Bible?

Answer: False prophets

He said that his disciples needed to be careful who they allowed to persuade them. If they believed everything they heard, they could be led astray by false prophets who were just looking to lead them away from what's right. This can be found in Matthew 7.
