Missouri's chances took a big hit yesterday missing a 24 yard field goal in the 2nd OT against South Carolina yesterday, after they gave up a 17-0 lead in the 4th Quarter,

Oregon took UCLA out of the Championship picture and Oklahoma took Texas Tech out of the ranks of the unbeaten.

Minnesota shocked Nebraska for a win, Northwesterns tailspin continued against Iowa, Miami cameback against Wake Forest to stay perfect, Navy threw up 17 4th quarter points to edge Pitt, Duke won a defensive battle over Virginia Tech, Michigan States defense proved as stout as ever, Ohio State put up big numbers on Penn State and Stanfords defense proved too much for Oregon State.

LSU squandered early opportunties and couldn't keep up with Alabama in the 2nd half. Notre Dame played a horrible 4th quarter doing themselves in on a night where a couple of key bad calls by the refs already stacked the deck against them, which when combined with a great effort by the Pittsburgh Panthers meant a loss for the Irish. Virginia Tech remembered they were a good team and took out Miami (FL) giving them their 2nd staight loss. Nebraska's defense overwhelmed Michigan. Stanford manhandled Oregon most of the game and took them from the unbeaten ranks, while Baylor proved their worth against Oklahoma on Thursday night.

With 4 weeks left in the regular season the current Championship game contenders are:

Major Conference undefeateds Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and Baylor.

1 loss teams with outside chances are Stanford, Missouri, Auburn and Oregon.

Small Conference undefeateds Fresno State and Northern Illinois are on the outskirts of the Championship picture.

I'm exhausted after running the gamut of emotions only the 4th quarter of football game like the Auburn v Georgia could bring out.

Thrilled Auburn got the win out of what was surely looking like a demoralizing defeat.

Yes the final touchdown was nothing short of lucky "Louis is going to score, a miracle at Jordan-Hare", but Murray was also stopped on the 2 foot line the series before that.

What other craziness has already happened, there was an accepted on field marriage proposal after the UCLA v Washington game, UCF almost lost to Temple, Kansas snapped a 27 game Big 12 losing streak, Pittsburgh bounces back from a big win against Notre Dame to fall to North Carolia, Virginia Tech seemed to turn the corner by beating Miami (FL) but goes down to Maryland in OT, Washington State goes into Arizona and gets a big win, Michigan score more points in the OTs than either team scored in regular time, Oklahoma State is starting to look like that team that could compete a bit too late though, and Duke might just play for a ACC Championship after beating Miami (FL), they have Wake Forest and arch rival North Carolina to beat to get a chance to play Florida State.

It's Rivarly Week, and the list of teams with a chance to make the National Champinhship game hasd dwindled.

Baylor is no longer undefeated and out of contention, Stanford and Oregon have already lost another game and are out and small Conference team Fresno State lost a shootout against San Jose State.

Teams still alive for the National Championship game are Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and Missouri.

Auburn hosts Alabama to see who will face off with SEC East Champion next week, either Missouri if they beat Texas A&M this week, or South Carolina.

Florida State has to get by a Florida team having a tough year, and then either Duke, Virginia Tech or Miami (FL) in the ACC Championship game next week.

Ohio State needs to get by Michigan today and Michigan State next week to keep their hopes alive.

If Alabama wins the SEC Championship game they will be in the Naitonal Champtionship game.

If Florida State wins out, they will most likely be in the National Championship game, with or without Heisman hopeful Jameis Winston.

If Auburn or Missouri win the SEC Championship game next week it will be up to the pollsters and BCS computers to see if they jump ahead of Ohio State if the Buckeyes stay unbeaten.

Northern Illinois has the inside track to return as a Non-BCS Conference school to make a BCS game and they might be the only Non-BCS Conference school with a chance.

NIU has been having a fine season, and might give one of the big boys a run for their money. It's difficult to tell how good they really are.

Jordan Lynch and the team in general will have to do a better job than last year's 31-10 Orange Bowl loss to Florida State.

Lynch was 15/41 for 176, 1 and 1, as well as 44 yards rushing at 1.9 per carry.

The BCS computer numbers aren't encouraging how I see it for Auburn.

A win over Missouri compared to a win over Michigan State won't move the needle enough to bridge the gap.

The winner of the SEC Championship game will need either a loss by Ohio State or something to happen with Florida State before the final poll.

Of course the computers favor the two unbeatens. Auburn could crush Missouri 77-3 and Ohio State could squeak by Michigan State 6-3 and Ohio State would still deserve the bid over Auburn because they haven't lost.

Just be glad you beat the best team in the country on a fluke and unsure missed call.

It's not always that simplistic with the rankings.

We beat the reigning champs and a great team, best team in the country though, that is more up for debate than the current BCS numbers.

2x defending champs and undefeated. They were the undisputed best team in the country as of Saturday.

Up until Saturday they had been the best team this season.

I'll be glad when all this arcane BCS ranking stuff finally goes away. Playoffs, playoffs, playoffs!

But, if there were playoffs this season, the SEC would win yet again. The four teams in would be Florida State, Ohio State (assuming they beat Michigan State), Auburn, and Alabama. Do you really want that?

I am a proponent of 1 school per conference in any system with 4 teams or less.

If you want to be the best, you have to beat the representative from the best. 7 years in a row for 1 conference is dominance.

One would argue that not all conferences are created equal. Others would argue that Alabama is the two time defending champs and a team who was a fluke play away from playing Missouri in the SEC title game.

Why should Alabama get left out because you feel the college football playoffs should take a cue from the MLB All-Star game and spread the representations around? I believe the defending champs should get a bid if they are ranked in the top five and have one loss or less, unless we have four unbeaten teams from qualified conferences.

If there is a BCS buster unbeaten, then there is a way in for them. I will use this season as the example. NIU is unbeaten, correct? Well, then they could play the defending champs who only have one loss (Alabama) and the winner there gets the four seed.

I feel that Alabama needs to be there to defend their title. It's not like they lost to anybody bad which would make them undeserving. Not like Oklahoma State who lost to West Virginia or Baylor who choked on the big stage.

I agree with you, Bx. It was a joke whem Alabama won the National Championship when they couldn't win their own conference. They couldn't even win their own division of their own conference!

With so many conferences and so many teams involved in the FBS there is no system that will be perfect. All new systems seem great until they are put into action and the inevitable flaws are found. The best we can hope for is a better system than the one before, which I think the BCS was and the new 4 team playoff will be. Each major conference has it's own style of play and that is what leads me to the thought of only 1 per conference, to get the most conferences involved. Oklahoma State laid some eggs to start the season, but they have been one of the strongest team when it counts the most in the last month. Just like that lost to Iowa State a few years ago, the loss to West Virginia is mind boggling, much like how Clemson lays at least one egg a year, this year it was at a bad time and they got run out of their own house by Florida State, the loss to South Carolina wasn't a horrible loss.

I think we can all agree that if the playoffs were to happen this year, three teams would be FSU, Auburn, and the winner of OSU/MSU. Who would be more deserving of the fourth spot than Alabama? A team who lost to West Virginia? Champions don't lose to bad teams like West Virginia. A two loss team out west? An undefeated, but unproven and unworthy NIU?

Like it or not, Alabama would be the fourth team and it would be the right decision. Just compare their loss to Oklahoma State's and you'll see this.

Yes, under the current way I understand how the new system will work next year, Alabama and Florida State would seem to be the only two teams assured to make it into the playoff going into this week.

Like DaveR mentions there does seem to be something wrong with a team not winning their conference, but winning the Championship. The first time it acutally happened was with Alabama and the first time there was a real chance was when Ohio State and Michigan were 1-2 late in the year, but I think either Florida or LSU ended up in the title game that year.
