February 16th 1972:Miners' strike turns off the lights Many homes and businesses will be without electricity for up to nine hours a day from today, the Central Electricity Generating Board has announced. Miners now into the sixth week of their strike over pay, have been picketing power stations and all other sources of fuel supply in an attempt to step up pressure on the Government. February 20th 1962: US spaceman orbits Earth The first American to orbit the Earth has landed safely in the Atlantic Ocean. Marine Lieutenant John Glenn, 40, travelled about 81,000 miles (more than 130,000km) as he circled the globe three times at more than 17,000 mph (27,000kph). Lieutenant Glenn controlled nearly two of the orbits himself after reporting "minor difficulties" with the automatic altitude control system as he completed the third circuit - the maximum anticipated. Messages from the astronaut were transmitted by radio stations across the United States and United Kingdom and his progress was monitored by 18 ground stations around the world. As he re-entered the atmosphere after his four-hour and 56-minute journey Lieutenant Glenn said: "Boy, that was a real fireball." His spacecraft, Friendship Seven, landed at 2040 GMT 240 miles north-west of Puerto Rico, where it was picked up by the US destroyer Noa. Altogether, 24 American ships were ready to pick up the astronaut and his craft from various locations across the globe. We are really proud of you President Kennedy The capsule was launched from the flaming Atlas rocket at 1447 GMT from Cape Canaveral, Florida. President Kennedy followed the mission on television and telephoned the astronaut afterwards. "We are really proud of you. You did a wonderful job," he said. The Queen and British Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, also cabled their congratulations. Technical problems had delayed the mission 10 times - a total of 61 days. The US has spent over £142m on the man-in-space programme so far and Nasa has planned another three manned orbital flights this year. The US Earth orbit took place 10 months and 10 days after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space, making one circulation of the globe. February 21st 1965: Black nationalist leader shot dead Controversial black leader Malcolm X, who once called for a "blacks-only" state in the US, has been assassinated. He was shot several times as he began a speech to 400 of his followers at the Audubon Ballroom just outside the district of Harlem in New York. Malcolm X, who was 39, was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. 24th February 1981: Prince Charles and Lady Di to marry The Prince of Wales and the Lady Diana Spencer have ended months of speculation with the announcement they are to be married. At 1100GMT Buckingham Palace made the engagement official. Lord Maclean, the Lord Chancellor made the following statement at an investiture at the Palace: "It is with greatest pleasure that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh announce the betrothal of their beloved son the Prince of Wales to the Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the Earl Spencer and the Honourable Mrs Shand Kydd." Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana three weeks ago at a private dinner at Buckingham Palace before she went to Australia. February 25th 1964: Cassius Clay crowned world champion Cassius Clay, 22, has been crowned heavyweight champion of the world after beating Sonny Liston in one of the biggest upsets in boxing's history. Clay, from Kentucky, was announced the winner after the hot favourite retired at the end of the sixth round in Miami. When the bell rang for the start of the seventh round, Liston stayed on his stool in the corner of the ring - saying he did not want to continue. Clay was earlier fined around £900 for disgraceful conduct after he ranted at his 32-year-old opponent during the weigh-in. He had chanted "I wanna rumble...I wanna rumble!" before saying "You're a tramp. I am going to eat you up. Somebody's going to die at the ringside tonight. Are you scared?" Liston had built his reputation on two first round knock-outs of Floyd Patterson and in the boxing world he was thought to be invincible. Clay had come into the fight after suffering his greatest humiliation to date - being knocked down by Henry Cooper's left hook. Liston reigned supreme when he was challenged by former Olympic gold medallist Clay, who ring experts said was "all talk". The majority of sports journalists covering the bout thought that Clay, who was 7-1 underdog, would be no match for Liston. Only half of the seats had been sold and around 8,000 people attended the fight. The fight started at 0310 GMT at the Convention Hall in Miami Beach and Liston had been widely expected to retain his title in the third round. 27th February 1963: Argoud charged over de Gaulle plot Antoine Argoud, President De Gaulle's arch enemy and a former colonel in the French Army, has been charged with an assassination attempt on the president two years ago. Argoud was, until now, the only active member of the Algerian Secret Army (OAS) , an organisation opposed to Algerian independence that has used violent methods to promote its cause. He was found by police yesterday tied up and badly bruised in the back of a blue van in central Paris after a tip-off. He claims he was kidnapped from Munich, Germany, by the French secret service, known as Les Barbouzes (the Bearded Ones). But the man who phoned police about Argoud's whereabouts claimed to be a member of the OAS. He told the police: "Argoud has betrayed us. He has failed in all the tasks which he should have organised - especially the attempt on the life of President de Gaulle at the Petit Clamart last August. "You can pick him up now. He is very near you." The blue van was found just yards from the Quai des Orfèvres, the French equivalent of Scotland Yard. February 28th 1991: Jubilation follows Gulf War ceasefire A ceasefire was announced in Washington by President George Bush after Iraq accepted all 12 resolutions made by the United Nations. In a live address to the nation US President Bush said: "Kuwait is liberated. Iraq's army is defeated. Our military objectives are met." He praised all 32 countries involved in Operation Desert Storm. "This is a victory for all mankind, for the rule of law and for what is right." "Our troops have performed magnificently. Right has prevailed," said British Prime Minister John Major. This is a victory for all mankind, for the rule of law and for what is right US President George Bush Top of the 12 demands made on Iraq by is the return of all Allied prisoners of war and thousands of Kuwaiti citizens taken to Iraq. It is also required to renounce any future claim to Kuwait and pay compensation for injuries it has caused. Iraq's army, once one of the largest in the world, has been all but destroyed. The six-week war to free Kuwait from Iraqi occupation culminated in a lightening ground campaign that achieved victory in just 100 hours. The allies currently hold 80,000 Iraqi PoWs who surrendered in droves in the last few days. Celebration in Kuwait Kuwait City rang with the sound of gunshots today celebrating the liberation of the city. But scenes of joy are overshadowed by black skies polluted by burning Kuwaiti oilfields set alight in a last desperate act by fleeing Iraqi forces. Many Iraqis interviewed on the streets of Baghdad were relieved their city has seen an end to the constant allied bombardment. But the media is claiming a victory for Saddam Hussein, with Baghdad Radio stating: "The allies of Satan and its accursed leader have been taught a lesson." Despite this claim, Iraqi casualties number tens of thousands. It has emerged that "friendly fire" killed more British troops than the Iraqis did - of 16 British soldiers who died, nine were killed by Americans.
