Now I am Inclined to pick a Marvel villain, and my favorite sseries is the X men. My favorite villain is the toad, although I believe the most competent villain to be Magneto.

There are some modern contenders, I'd agree. I'd suggest Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in 'Die Hard'. Alan Rickman as The Sheriff of Nottingham in 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'. John Hurt as Caligula in 'I,Claudius'.

Of the ones you just mentioned, the only one I've actually seen is John Hurt as Caligula in I, Claudius. I've heard about the others, though (and seen trivia questions on them.) I had watched the entire I, Claudius series on PBS and recorded it on VHS back in the pre-DVD era. Some great actors in that one: Brian Blessed, Derek Jacobi, Patrick Stewart. And I enjoyed John Hurt as Caligula even though back in the 70s when it was originally filmed, even then, John Hurt was a little too old for the role of Caligula. But it's difficult to match the ages of the actors with the characters in a drama that spans generations. A little dramatic license is OK. Excellent production, overall, though I first encountered it years after its original filming. Can't remember exactly. Maybe I saw it in the early 90s.

I saw its original transmission and my husband, who was working overtime at a factory at the time, informed his boss that he didn't want to work Monday evenings because he didn't want to miss I,Claudius. Fortunately his boss was an understanding man.

Another brilliant portrayal in that series was Augustus's wife, Livia, by Sian Phillips. Come to think of it she was the villain of the series and had quite a lively wit, so you could say she was a bit of a comic villain too.

You are right about that. Livia was awesome. In fact, I strongly suspect that David Chase had that character in his mind when he created Tony Soprano's mother in The Sopranos. I was a bit surprised by the Messalina character. The series appeared to be relatively straightforward (even in the Caligula portions), but when Messalina appears... wow!

Well Messalina had that reputation.

With all the underhand plotting, straightforward is not an adjective I'd have used.

Aggripina was another villain but none matched Livia in my opinion.

Yes, straightforward was the wrong choice of word. The slithering hissing snake in the opening credits certainly proves that. Still, I did not expect what I saw when Messalina appeared in the story. I knew a little history of the Julian emperors beforehand. But not so much the females of the period.

Riddler, Joker and Catwoman all good villains in Batman as is Lex Luthor in Superman.
But my vote goes to Mystique from X Men

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Boris and Natasha from 'Rocky and Bullwinkle' - as fine a pair of comic villains as you'd find anywhere.

Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb. Not a very good villian really but he is funny.
