Subject: The Grand National

The biggest horse race in the world jumps off on Saturday at Aintree race course in Liverpool and all the once a year punters will be filling the bookies to bursting point. I have picked Black Apalachi, Butler's Cabin and Cornish Sett up to now, using scientific methods of course, I would like to see the weird and wonderful ways you pick yours and what you have come up with.

lol Bernie my mate bet on the winner and put on £2 to win and £2 for a place on it. Spooky but he was also born in 1967 - it's alright for some isnt it :)

Yes we will all try harder next year. I can't wait another 42 years for a 100-1, I will settle for the winner whatever the price.

Drew Irish Invader in the pub sweep. Don't know how it ran.

Another race for the bookmakers. As always.

Not wanting to open up a complete thread.

In other Horse Racing news.

Zenyatta finished off a fantastic year with a victory in the Breeders Cup Classic today, coming from last and storming to the front in the last part of the race.

Yes, what a good mare. Being UK based, I had never seen her (on TV) before and when I watched her walking in the paddock I noticed what a peculiar gait she had. It didn't stop her from winning from a seemingly impossible position though. I was impressed with Goldikova, too, winning the Mile on turf for the second year running.

I think the Brits did a little better than usual this year... good racing, hopefully no accidents (as far as I know)... only the Japan cup to come and then they can all take a well earned rest.

Well, A P McCoy did it at last, winning the 2010 Grand National on Don't Push It. I think I mentioned on another Sports thread somewhere that A P is one of my sporting heroes. He has now ridden over 3,000 winners but the National was a race which had always eluded him, sometimes through ridiculously bad luck!

It is the 2011 Grand National horse race at Aintree, Liverpool UK on Saturday 9th April. Can last years winner Push It ridden by Tony McCoy win again, it may be favourite by Saturday. No horse has won it two years running or with top weight since Red Rum in 1974. Speaking of Red Rum, his trainers son Donald McCain can win it with Ballabriggs. I have already had a wager on it at 14-1 and also on Silver By Nature at 14-1. I may back another two on the day so any good tips would be appreciated.

Silver By Nature has a shot at a decent price.

The Grand National horse race is on the 14th April this year. I am going for the winner of the race last year Ballabriggs 16-1 and Junior

Killyglen would be a reasonable EW bet if you can get it at better than 20-1.

Killyglen ran well last year before falling at the fourth last, has a great chance this year. I am going for last years winner Ballabriggs, if it wins it will be the first horse to win the Grand National back to back since Red Rum in 1974. If Synchronised wins it will be the first horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year since Golden Miller in 1934. I am also backing Junior, Cappa Bleu and Neptune Collonges. If they don't fall I feel certain that at least three of them will be placed.

1st Neptune Collonges at 33/1, 4th Cappa Bleu at 16/1. Two out of five ain't bad.

The greatest steeplechase in the world takes place at Aintree (near Liverpool UK) race course next week. It is the Grand National and I have done well over the years picking the winner and placed horses. Here are the five horses that I have already had a bet on for this years race.

Balthazar King 25-1
Long Run 14-1
Monbeg Dude 25-1
Mountainous 25-1
Tidal Bay 33-1

Good luck if you have a bet on the race whatever you are backing.

If I could take a flyer on the race, I might put a small bet down on Tidal Bay. Age and guile will often overcome youth and skill.

And the actual result:

Pineau de Re
Balthazar King
Double Seven
Alvarado
