Do you drink wine? What type do you like best? Is there one label you prefer above the rest? Do you drink wine by itself or with food? Do you think one country dominates over others in the quality of its wines?

I have many attachments to Spain, professional and otherwise, and I choose its red wines practically every time.

Well done Daver! It's nice to hear of a bargain that isn't a scam - almost restores my faith in human nature. Update: The woman who gave us the wine I mentioned at #174, died this February a few days after her 90th birthday. She was firing on all cylinders until her last short illness and will be much missed.

I had a nice Chilean wine tonight with dinner. Valley Central Merlot 2017. Very palatable and just under £5 in price.

To describe the flavour ... it was young light fresh and fruity but nicely dry too. Perfect with our spaghetti meal.

Neighbours gave us a half crate of new world wines for looking after their cats while they were on holiday. I've not sampled any yet though.

I've now sampled some of the wine. The Vina Mues Temperanillo 2016 is very nice.

You poor Brits really can't really get good cheap wine because of the crippling taxes you pay on imported wine. Brexit will probably make the situation worse. Taxes aren't quite so bad in the U.S. The best bargain wines here come from Chile, Australia, and California's Central Valley. The Aussies produce a ton of wine, and most of it, if not outstanding, is at least drinkable. Bordeaux is my favorite wine, but so overpriced I seldom drink it, except on special occasions.

Daver It's probably just as well that there's tax on wines, otherwise more of us would drink ourselves to death and for those that do wreck their livers it's nice to know that their drinking taxes will have supported the NHS services they receive when they need them.

The wines our neighbour bought us all come from the New World and we hadn't tried any of them before. My husband usually goes for Italian ,French or Spanish reds and does manage to find some very nice ones that are not expensive (in terms of what's considered not expensive here). I prefer red wines to white ones, generally.

By the way, I realised after I wrote it, I'd misspelt 'Tempranillo'. Looks like I've misspelt misspelt with that red line underneath, but it's just that US spelling is different (misspelled).

Not a wine snob - I like both red and white wines, but usually drink white because I don't want to stain my teeth. Local grocery store carries a very fine California wine, "Livingston," about $6.00 for 1.5 liter bottle. I prefer "Moscato," but it comes in several other varieties. Highly recommend.

I think that it is hard to beat a good Rioja. Lots of our wines are not exported which is sad. We must drink them all :)

I have this theory that French in particular but also Spanish and Italians keep all their best wine and export the less good that's in surplus. The reason I believe this is that I've always had nicer wines when holidaying in these countries than I would find at home. I'm not referring to the most expensive wines but everyday ones which ordinary people drink.

Oh, bananapeel39, Livingstone is not very good wine, and Moscato is a less than desirable grape varietal.

If you like a sweeter white wine, try a German Riesling, or a Washington State
Gewürztraminer, or even a Greek Moschofilero.

One very nice and inexpensive wine I tried recently was a Fetzer Sundial Chardonnay 2015, which was rated a "best buy" by the Wine Spectator, with a score of 88. It was on sale for $6.99 at my local supermarket and is better than many wines costing twice as much - or more.

I really like Rioja as well, horadada, but I liked it more in the old days when it was oaked to high heaven, and lasted for decades. Back in 1972 I was visiting my girlfriend in Seville, and we went to a restaurant called La Luna Parque, and we drank a 1928 Rioja that was just wonderful, and we later had a 1931 white Rioja that was still fresh and kicking. Most Rioja made today is lighter, not as oaky, and made to be drunk much earlier.

Went to lunch with a friend of mine today. While looking at the wine list, I spotted a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 2015 for $36. Thought this must have been a mistake - Chateau Montelena is expensive wine! This sells direct from the winery for $58! So we ordered a bottle, and it was just excellent. My friend (who is more of a Chardonnay drinker than I) was very impressed. Will have to go back and down another bottle!

I've had Gewürztraminer. It was really nice but I've not seen it around much.

Last Tuesday my lady friend and I went to lunch at a new restaurant here in Springfield called Loukinen's On Fourth. Very posh place with excellent food. While looking at the wine list, I saw they had Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 2015 at $36 a bottle. I thought this had to be a mistake. Chateau Montelena is a very famous and fairly expensive wine; it was Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that won the white wine category in the famous "Judgment of Paris" in 1976. This wine sells for around $50 in a wine shop, and restaurants usually charge 3 to 4 times as much as the retail price. But the waitress assured us that the price was correct, so we ordered a bottle. And, yes, it was fantastic!

I agree Reisling is way better than the stuff I usually drink, but to say I'm not fussy would be an understatement. Suffice it to say, I am not a wine snob. I prefer sweet wines.
