I always liked La Haine.

Obviously, for any non-English speaker, Hollywood blockbusters would seem a logical choice but can we refrain from suggesting any.

I'm partial to the Swedish Let the Right One In (or, properly, Låt den rätte komma in).

I love the Pedro Almodovar films - Women on the verge of a Nervous Breakdown is a good one. There is a lovely french film called Romauld et Juliette - I do like Daniel Auteuil.

La Haine is a great film, but my favorites are Kieslowski's Trois Couleurs. I can't ever pick one of the three, so I'll just count them as one...

I've just finished watching Grigori Chukhrai's Ballad Of A Soldier for the umpteenth time.
One of the most powerful and moving anti-war films ever made, and one that never fails to break my heart.

I loved The Sea Inside, with Javier Bardem playing a real-life quadriplegic. Great movie, so sad.

Stalingrad. Made by the Germans. Possibly best war film ever.

Denmark: Babette's Feast and Pelee The Conqueror. From Germany: The Tin Drum. From Japan: Ran and Dreams (9 short stories)(Akira Kurosawa). From China: The Red Door and Farewell, My Concubine. From Sweden: The Seventh Seal and Let The Right One In. From UK: The Ladykillers. From France: Repulsion (early film with Catherine Deneuve). There was a good film from Korea about a handicapped (blind?) girl trained in martial arts.

"Les Choristes" - it's a French film about a boys boarding school in the late 1940's. I loved the music in it; "Caresse Sur L'Ocean" is a beautiful song.

There're a few old Russian comedies I enjoy a lot, especially "Ivan Vasilyevich Gets a New Job".
