It seems to me, if the *Left Field* umpire made the call, while in Left Field, it has nothing to do with the *Infield* fly rule. Dang! The ball dropped directly in front of him :-O Horrible call in a game that would never have been played last year. Atlanta should have moved on, in the same way Baltimore should move on (I write this before the outcome of this evening's game). This one-game playoff idea stinks! P.S. I'm a Yankees fan, and have no stake in either of today's games. Reply #41. Oct 05 12, 7:22 PM |

The rule has nothing to do with the "infield" per se, but rather whether or not an infielder can make the play within an "ordinary effort." I've seen a breakdown of the play and you can understand why the umpire made the call (simply made on Kozma's positioning and where the ball is)... but it was the wrong call, no question. I hate it had to happen, but I do honestly believe the game would not have ended any differently, and have had several Braves fans tell me the same. We may never know, but a win is a win for St. Louis. Reply #42. Oct 05 12, 8:05 PM |

now we know where the NFL replacement refs went! In the future, the extra two "line umpires" only calls should be on wheather a ball is fair or foul or if a HR is actually a HR (and fan interference). The rule they blew last night was the "INFIELD fly rule"...why didn't one of the infield umps call it? Obvious answer , in their judgement (and mine) it did not meet the qualifications to be be ruled an infield fly rule candidate. In the future, only infield umpires should have the authority to call TIFR Reply #45. Oct 06 12, 2:39 PM |

The infield fly rule has to be called immediately as well. This way, the runners know whether or not they might have to run if the ball drops or if they can stay right where they are. Reply #46. Oct 06 12, 4:18 PM |

I don't disagree with the call, but Anton is right...It must be called immediately, so everybody knows what they're doing! Nice clip, boxjaw! Reply #48. Oct 06 12, 9:58 PM |

boxjaw Just curious...why do you hate left coast home games? I just checked and they are all televised starting at 8:30pm e.s.t. (in case you thought they might be delayed until 10-11) Reply #53. Oct 13 12, 1:21 PM |

I pretty much don't like west coast starting times in any sport. Living in Jacksonville FL does it. I know there's nothing that can be done about it. I guess some on west coast hate watching 1:00 EST start times as well. Reply #55. Oct 13 12, 3:08 PM |

12:54 AM here on the East Coast and Yankee Stadium has deflated as the Tigers took the lead in the 12th AND Derek Jeter was carried of the field. Hope it isn't that bad :( Do the Yankees have another miraculous comeback? (yawn) Let's find out! Reply #56. Oct 13 12, 10:55 PM |

Screw the Cardinals. I'm bitter and they're boring. Same old crap with baseball every year. Thank God for football. Reply #57. Oct 14 12, 2:57 AM |

And there it is! The Tigers have advanced to the World Series! Who will face them? Cards have a 2-1 lead! Can we be looking at an '06 rematch? Time will tell! Reply #58. Oct 18 12, 5:50 PM |

Yes!!!! I loathe the Yankees (fam's originally from Boston, so, yeah) and I loathe the Cardinals (big Reds rivals, and their my team). I'd much rather have the Giants go on the World Series to face the Tigers. Reply #59. Oct 18 12, 6:06 PM |

I just heard an interesting piece of trivia on the radio. The last 4 Triple Crown winners all went to the World Series the year they achieved it. Reply #60. Oct 19 12, 6:45 AM |
