Miss as few games as possible.
Go for all ten answers in the daily Brain Twist, not just enough to get credit.
Play as many double starred and starred games as you can.
Even though you may not do well on Impossible, play it anyway. The .1% advancement you get adds up and can make the difference between getting into the top 30 or being #31.

I am still pretty green at it (this round was the first one starting from the opening. I joined FT on the tail end of the previous one) but I have been looking at the scoring patterns and I can already echo everything MiraJane said, especially about playing the star and double star categories whenever you are even mildly comfortable with the subjects. I have been attempting to include, as a minimum, three of the starred categories among my five regular games every round. Comparing my score to a friend who I know plays the same five categories he is strong in every time, my cumulative average score has run about 1000-1200 below his, but with an equal number of games played...our progress through the global challenge levels has been neck and neck all along.
Beyond that its a long hall so keep chugging and dont get frustrated. I may let my foot off the gas so to speak because I am going to be away for a few days here soon and coming back to see how far everyone progressed while I was dormant will be frustrating. If you do get to that point, I would suggest not quitting altogether, but rather use the remaining time as prep for the next round. If you are locked in on just a few comfortable categories as with my friend above. Shop around in some of the other categories. You may find some that you have more of an affinity for than you expected. It is always nice to have more solid-strong caregories to give more flexibility when chasing star categories.

Good luck

Thank you for the ideas... I will keep plugging away and try those starred games. I am at level six and the progress is already very slow. How do you find out where you are in comparison to other players? Thanks again for everything

Found all the stats...so focussed on the games never poked around all the stats.... quite an amazing game. So many layers.

Heh, meant to say my average score has run 100-200 below his...not 1000...the ** bonus is not THAT strong ;) Also see the global challenge link on your team page....might give some additional insight if you are tracking it round by round alongside a teammate and you can see game by game details and how it changes the standings.

MiraJane, I think that no matter how many questions you score at Brain Twist if you get credit, you earn the same bonus pts in the GC. Am I erroneous?

No, DeepHistory, I think you're correct - if you get 5/10 correct in the Brains Twist you get the advancement points, if you get 10/10 you get the same amount. Although I try to do as well as I can for my own satisfaction, plus I don't like risking anything in the GC - what if I didn't calculate my proportion of right answers correctly? What if FT has a hissy fit and says I didn't click one when I did? What if... better to be safe.

I think you're right DeepHistory. I always thought Brain Twist was scored on a pass/fail basis. You either get the bonus from it or you don't with no difference between getting 6 correct or all 10 questions correct. Maybe one of the Admins or Mods will clarify this.

And along comes a helpful bunny to clear things up.

Are you going after the new badge this time, DireWolf? If so, good luck!

Oh, you mean that irksome new Hardcore Immortal badge that Terry decided to add after I had just rounded out my GC badge collection with the two All Rounder minis? Yes and thanks. I think I may have dropped too many games already to earn it this time. I'll keep plugging away at it though and hope for the best.

I still have nightmares about the epic 3-way fight to the finish between looney_tunes, mhenson400 and myself for the Hardcore badge. Hard to believe that happened way back in September of 2011. Time flies!

I got the information about more credit for more correct on the Brain Twist from two trusted sources - daBomb and Wesley Crusher.

Case closed then right? I know there has to be some old threads about this floating around here somewhere.

Hmm, I'm still not convinced... unless and until Wes arrives with a spreadsheet showing his precise calculations to the sixth decimal point. ;)

Well, Wesley is on vacation right now but should return soon. He probably has it figured out to 10 decimal places :)

I'm not positive, but surely you get points for your score as well as a bonus for more than half correct? So although the bonus remains the same for a score of 5 vs. 10, the actual score itself would give advancement points? Maybe only the bonus applies to the GC; I'm quite curious now to hear the answer from Wes too!

Didn't think of that but it sounds reasonable.

Okay, this is bugging me now - and bunnies don't like being bugged. So, in a spirit of pure research I've done today's Brainteaser and calculated the extent of the bonus I got. As I'm not very far ahead in this GC (by virtue of playing only when required by my daily challenge) the extent the bonus forms a larger proportion of my progress than it would at a higher level but the results showed...

I started today 47.625% along in level 4. I did the Brainteaser and scored 10/10. I am now 50.75% along in level 4. Therefore a perfect Brainteaser gave me a bonus worth 3.125%.

I will try to remember to do the Brainteaser tomorrow and try to get less than 10/10 to see if I get a different percentage. Feel free to send me a reminder!

PS The Brainteaser Bonus is the same throughout the GC but the percentage advantage is different at each level because the levels aren't the same size and the rate of progress therefore differs. So while I got a 3% advantage for this Brainteaser at level 4, at level 10 the advantage might only be .0001% so we need to make sure we're checking like with like.

I'm almost out of Division 6 and I'm pretty sure that I've received the same amount of advancement from the Brain Twist for the entirety of it regardless of getting 5/10 or 10/10. Something like 1.4, I don't really keep track of it. I have a hard enough time trying to remember all this trivia stuff. If I bogged down my brain with all the stats and inner workings of this site, my head would explode.
