It's been confirmed 'Admire Rakti' died from a heart attack & sadly, a second horse has died. 'Araldo' was euthanized after breaking his leg when he was spooked by a child's waving flag. Reply #1. Nov 04 14, 4:09 PM |

It's unfortunate that this is an 'accepted' part of racing. Admire Rakti was not a happy horse yesterday - I thought at first he had blinkers fitted but it was a complete hood cover and took several fellas a lot longer than it should have to have him settled in his gate. I believe he tried his hardest eventhough he felt rotten, as I think is evidenced by him dropping quickly to the tail of the field. There was initally some hope for Araldo when they took him almost straight away to Werribee Vet Centre but it's so hard to repair a break in horse's leg. Strange freaky episode. :( Reply #2. Having come from a family with race connections I saw and heard much as a younger person which turned me off ever getting involved or placing my money on such a pastime which is relatively crooked. Exploitation of animals, any animals, for monetary gain is in my eyes a dirty business and were it up to me it would all be completely obliterated from the face of the planet. Reply #3. I understand your view Mommakat but why else would the Thoroughbred exist, if not to race? Reply #4. Nov 05 14, 4:18 AM |

It's always sad when animals die in such a public way. I think there's always pressure on trainers not to withdraw from a race on short notice, when in fact this would sometimes be the wisest and kindest thing to do. The death of Synchronised in the 2012 Grand National is a case in point. Unfortunately, once financial gain comes into it, it's inevitable that there will be animal suffering. That goes for everything from animal racing, through to our consumption of animals, down to pet ownership. Someone I know through the retired greyhound trust lost one of her greyhounds when he broke his neck running around their garden. She was devastated, but took some comfort in the fact that it's a good way for a greyhound to go. Another friend lost her greyhound to a heart attack at the weekend. He was five years old and only recently retired, she'd had him for a mere 2 months. It's thought that fireworks going off stressed him out, yet he was the most laid back dog imaginable. Those two incidents weren't public, yet things like that happen all the time. Animals die in accidents and from illnesses, just like humans. Reply #5. Nov 05 14, 5:09 AM |

It's turned out it was actually a man waving the flag. He didn't seem to realise he was causing a problem until he was told his actions had resulted in a horse getting injured. Hopefully, there'll now be a restriction put on the size of flags people are allowed to bring to the races. Reply #6. Nov 06 14, 4:17 PM |

For the first time in Australia's horse racing history, a female jockey has won the Melbourne Cup, but, once again, we hold grave fears for one of the horses that ran in today's race. Ten-year-old 'Red Cadeaux' appears to have suffered a leg injury and has been taken to Werribee Vet Clinic for immediate surgery. Fingers crossed he'll be OK, especially after what happened last year. Reply #7. Nov 03 15, 12:20 AM |

Good news on 'Red Cadeaux'. His injuries aren't life threatening. He'll have surgery tomorrow but he won't race again. Reply #8. Nov 03 15, 2:03 AM |

Terrible news! Just found out that 'Red Cadeaux' has been euthanized following complications with blood flow to his injured leg. He'll be buried at Flemington Racecourse. Reply #9. Nov 20 15, 5:38 PM |
