Announced on the news that in the first year of charging 5p for plastic bags in England, the sale of plastic bags has reduced by some phenomenal amount - by about 80% I believe. NI, Wales and Scotland were the first to introduce bag charges and sales there have gone down by between 70-80%. Reply #21. Jul 31 16, 9:46 AM |

In response to 13LuckyLady's comment about not being able to carry cloth bags. may I suggest that she use my solution? I also am well past the age at which I can carry several heavy bags, so I bought myself a wheelie bag. It carries a week's worth of groceries in one compact cloth bag on wheels, with a long handle so I can push or pull it along. I also have cloth bags that I use for light shopping trips. I don't put fruit or veg in the plastic bags provided for that purpose by my supermarket. I take paper bags from their bakery section and use those instead. I have gone beyond eliminating plastic bags from my life. I'm getting rid of all plastic wherever and whenever I can. I use large paper bags for household garbage, and glass containers with bamboo lids for leftovers and other food storage, and as plastic items I already own break down, wear out, or are no longer usable, I replace them with metal, glass. or some other sustainable material. When I did the inventory of my home use of plastic I was shocked to realize how much plastic we use in our day to day lives. My laptop case is - yep - plastic. So is my phone, my toothbrush (now replaced with bamboo toothbrush), the packaging for the ointments and creams in my medicine cabinet, my shower curtain....and on and on it goes. It seems to be that there's a genius out there somewhere who could come up with a way of making plastic biodegradable...and wouldn't that be nice? - but until we find said genius, we have to do our bit to stop our planet from choking to death.
