I got Iceland in our sweepstake at work. Doubt they'll get past France then Germany/Italy then Wales in the final too though! Reply #1. Jun 27 16, 3:39 PM |

I had mixed feelings about the match--England always seems to have tough luck in big tournaments and Iceland had already surpassed all expectations. With that said, England really did not play well, with poor passing and an inability to finish. Iceland are truly a Cinderella team, and even if they get trounced by France (which I hope doesn't happen) they have much to be proud of and can leave with their heads held high. Reply #2. I hate the way all English sports commentators, before matches, seem to say. "Of course England should win this one". Please don't say that. It's inevitably followed by England losing miserably. Also, a day or 2 ago a journalist asked Roy Hodgson how his team was preparing to play Iceland. He said something like "we're not concerning ourselves with how Iceland play, we are just going to play our normal game". I thought then, that didn't sound too good. You always have to plan for the opposition. After the game sports commentators were saying England didn't seem to have a strategy or if there was one they didn't seem to know what it was. Reply #3. P.S England needs a manager like Ranieri who knows how to motivate a team and at the same time minimise the pressure on them. I think part of England's problem is nervousness on the big occasion. Having said that Iceland are a good team. All credit to them. Reply #4. Jun 28 16, 2:46 AM |

As long as the English Premiership remains composed of predominately foreign imports, England will continue to field a mediocre team in International terms. The one argument with that theory, is that even before English teams became saturated with foreign players, England still fielded mostly a mediocre team. :) Reply #6. Jul 07 16, 2:54 PM |

I agree to some extent but Iceland and Wales have much smaller populations from which to draw their footballers and they did better than England. Also both Irish teams (North and South) punched above their weight given that they didn't have many (if any?) players that play in the Premier League). Reply #7. Jul 08 16, 4:22 AM |

Surely the clubs will have to cut down on foreign players after we exit the EU as they will have to go back to the old system of quotas for foreign players as all European players will then be classed as foreign. That should shake the system up and force teams to concentrate more on local and home grown talent which can only be good for the England International team. Reply #9. Oct 12 16, 3:35 AM |

I think we decided long before this we can't play football . I'd say in the 80's we were well on the way to not being able to play football and have enhanced this ability since . Reply #10. Apr 03 17, 10:46 AM |
