Subject: Calling all Cooks

I love to cook, and I have several gadgets that help me do the job. The one I'd be lost without is my mandolin. It can slice potatoes as thin as paper for a delicious pan haggerty, or into not-quite-so-thin slices for scalloping. It will julienne the carrots, slice the french fries, and, best of all, save me from shedding tears as I slice onions into any thickness I desire. Yep, I'd be lost without my mandolin. What's your favourite tool in the kitchen?

I’m no cook, but I make dinner often. This may seem silly, but I would be lost without measuring cups/spoons. I’ve seen professional cooks say “Two tablespoons of vanilla” then dump some of it right out of the bottle. Not me! I can’t eye that kind of stuff out.

My daughter says I haven't really learned to cook because I need to look up recipes and can't remember things in my head like she can.

I love my mandolin too! However, years ago, I was wandering around in the kitchen department of some store (can't remember which one) when I spied two items that became faithful servants in my kitchen: the first was a hardboiled egg slicer ( perfect for all kinds of salads and deviled eggs, and the second was an apple corer and slicer. Another item I use constantly is a stainless steel pot with a stainless steel steamer insert. This one is super for making individual servings of steamed veggies like asparagus, carrots, and cauliflower - heck, I've even done fish in it! Sometimes the smallest gadgets are the best, but I DO love my bread machine. I use it to mix and knead my dough, but not to bake it. (Somehow, it's never the satisfying brown it needs to be) When the last cycle is finished, I remove the dough, place it in a greased loaf pan, cover it for the last rising and pop it in the oven. Now I'm hungry........

Memorycat, I agree with you about the egg slicer and the apple corer. I've never used a bread machine. I still like taking out all my aggression on a lump of dough. Beats stubbing my toes kicking the furniture!

My favourite tools are a little black knife that's excellent for peeling vegetables and a wooden lemon juicer which makes juicing lemons so easy. I also like my blender which I use for making soups, and home made hummus. Also we use an old coffee grinder to grind peppercorns, and it's great for producing good quantities of ground pepper almost instantly without much effort, and my garlic press.

Haven't looked in here for awhile - sorry about that! Mix, what a wonderful idea about the coffee grinder to process peppercorns! I have terrible neuropathy in my left (and dominant hand) but also a bad case of tendonitis on my right wrist. I also adore cracked black pepper, and it's gotten too painful to grind it out of a pepper grinder. Where did you get your "old" coffee grinder? I've got to try this! Anne

Hi Anne, I haven't looked at this for a while as I've been away on holiday. My husband found the coffee grinder in a charity shop, so it was just a lucky find. I've no idea if they still make them new. Maybe they do.

My favorite kitchen tool is my handy Big Mouth Shovel Spoon. It looks like a little shovel but it's about twice the size of a tablespoon. It's perfect for when I'm scarfing my 25 lb. jars of vegemite like they were big tubs of my favorite ice cream. :-)
