Subject: Guest - just visiting

Posted by: diade68

Maybe I was not paying attention in the past, but nowadays I find a lot of people just visiting the FB site and playing in all sorts of games . It made me curious why a person playing the same game ( mixed game to be precise) at least six hours in a row is not tempted to become a regular member. I am interested in your opinion, just for the sake of argument.

That explains why I couldn't get the site to open. I was wondering if it was on my end. I was lucky and didn't have a game going. Sorry you weren't as fortunate. :(

No, there is no way to get your true results back.

I was about to begin the first Global set of the day, and was resigned to missing an entire set. Fortunately, the outage was brief, and I was able to get it in. If it had been a few minutes longer, I would have been out of luck.

These things can happen in a cyber world.

I'm a member, second time around. But I can surely see the motivation to just come on here and do a few quizzes then go. Joining gives you some extra perks but nothing worth pursuing unless you're more of the ultra-competitive type...the kind that seeks to win at any cost, in any contest. There is a small virtue in having a somewhat cavalier attitude toward this site. There are enough pitfalls and imperfections on this site to make any casual player question his or her motivation in joining. One of them is the over-reliance on speed. In my view, a score of 9 on a 10-question quiz should NEVER beat a score of 10 despite how long the 10 took. Speed is okay as a tie-breaker for same scores. But its emphasis here is a turn-off for many...as my history of received PMs has shown.

If the site gave a better score to a 5 minute 10/10 than a 15 second 9/10, the site would just be testing how quickly people can Google. Which doesn’t float my boat I have to say.

If you want 10/10 to always beat 9/10 then your option is to take quizzes that aren't timed and where points are awarded on the basis of the number of correct answers. However, if you want to compete against other players then there has to be some way for the site to compare like for like - and the only one that really works in an online environment without an invigilator prowling the halls is to use a timer. If you can find another way of doing it, feel free to suggest it.

Cheaters! They take the quizzes multiple times under different "guest" appearances. I had to finish #1 on a challenge today and the same "Guests" kept appearing each time improving the time and score. I'm sorry maybe all these "Guests" are just totally geniuses, but I don't think so. 27 seconds!! Who reads that fast.

A 'guest' will not win a challenge over a registered member. You will also likely note that the 'guests' have different numbers against their 'guest' designations, indicating different people.

As for cheating, FT takes cheating very seriously, and has various ways of spotting cheaters, and is vigilant in this regard.

FT also takes allegations of cheating very seriously, and frowns on public accusations. If you have spotted something specific, it would be best to contact an administrator, directly, and not in a public forum.

As for speed, give it time (pun intended). I was pretty slow, after just a month on the site, myself. The more I played, the faster I got. After awhile, some questions repeated, and the rhythm of individual games became routine. Even still, my ageing reflexes will never allow me to get certain speed badges... and that's O.K. :-D

But I noticed that in the Monster game and the Bus Ride game, we are encouraged to look up answers to the questions. Is that going to continue in the foreseeable future?

Those aren't competitions and they are untimed. There are no rankings for the last game of Monster Quiz or Bus Ride. They only keep track of if you played (Monster) or if you got a passing score (Bus Ride). They are nothing like competitive games so players can take all day on them if they want. Same for Brain Twist. Comparing competitive games to quizzes is a mistake. They are totally different animals. The mechanisms for identifying and deterring cheating in competitive games are essential. Players can get credit for Monster Quiz just for playing, even if they get 0/15 correct. Try that in Who's the Smartest.

I diligently follow the red rule: "All quiz submits must be based on knowledge in your head." This results in me approaching even the untimed quizzes here on FT with the same level of seriousness as my mid-term or end-term exams, by solely relying on my own mental capacity, and not seeking any external sources of information. Interestingly, my quiz correctness percentage has always hovered in the range of 67 to 69. I get around 50% in my weak categories and around 90% in my strong categories, which subsequently balances itself out. :) I only compare myself with myself, so I only think about what I should be doing. So, I'm not worried about what others do here, but this is what I do. And I feel happy here! I am now just waiting for the GC to start. Happy Monday! :)

Even though it's timed, I think Obscurity also allows research on questions given that there is a challenge to get 12 correct in 280 seconds (almost 5 minutes) and there is a badge called Obscure Researcher.

True. There is a time penalty in Obscurity, but it is not as severe as in Smartest, Expert, Mixed, or Piece of Cake. In those games, taking time to research even a single question will severely cripple your score (which is the way it should be, in my opinion). But in Obscurity, researching a few questions may help your score if done judiciously. I must say, however, that my Tier 7 in Obscure Researcher was achieved with multiple games spread over the years where I got 15/15 correct with no research at all (despite the name of the badge), relying on knowledge off the top of my head, educated guesses, and a considerable amount of luck in the games that moved me up a Tier. I strongly doubt I could have reached Tier 7 if I had taken the time to research even a single question, as I would have gone over the 120 second mark (required for Tier 7) had I tried to do any research. The matter of the time penalty in competitive games (and how severe it is for particular games) has been pretty much unchanged for a very long time now. The powers-that-be that set those penalties where they are (and this includes the Global Challenge games as well) I think made good choices. They are unnecessary in untimed noncompetitive quizzes like Monster, Bus Ride, Quiz of the Hour, and Brain Twist. If people want to do those without any research at all, that is fine, but since no harm comes to other players if a particular player decides to look up one or more answers in those, there was no reason to create any penalties there. In fact, since the penalties that do exist in competitive games are time penalties (which obviously are only possible in timed games), to create penalties for untimed quizzes would mean going out of the way to create a completely new type of penalty, and there would be no point in doing so. Forcing Monster, Bus Ride, etc. to be timed would be just as unnecessary, and would likely provoke a considerable degree of objections from players that I would consider justified. My general philosophy, which certainly applies in this case, is to leave settled policies alone unless you have some really good reason for wanting to change something. The clear difference between policies for timed games and policies for untimed quizzes is reason enough to leave things as they are.

Personally, I never research answers, because for me that would turn it into work rather than play. If I’m going to do research, it will be for something more than a point in a game with zero real world consequences. I do know people who love going down the rabbit hole of research, though, for its own sake.

Which is why I’ve ever been able to understand those (few, thankfully) who cheat here. How empty does your life have to be to cheat for nothing more than bragging rights. What possible value do bragging rights have if you haven’t earned them? Me, if I’m going to cheat, it will be in order to win the lottery! Million bucks or I can’t be bothered.
