Thanks for tips. I’m still terrible at the game though. Reply #21. Sep 01 23, 6:13 AM |

I play based on the number of possible words left altogether. It's simply playing the best odds and it clearly works. Learning a few thousand words also helps as some will probably never be seen outside crystal ball such as rhodomontade and philhellene. Reply #22. Sep 01 23, 8:42 PM |

What are the new rules for Crystal Ball? This last hour there were 4 winners that guessed the word in the first 45 minutes, all of them are "champs" and yet the game came to an end at the 45 minute mark. I thought it was supposed to go on until a non champ guessed it, or when a new word is chosen on the hour. Reply #23. Sep 09 23, 1:05 AM |

My understanding is that if anyone, champ or not, guesses the word blindly, i.e. before .45, the game finishes with one or more winners. If nobody has guessed the word by .45 the game continues. If a champ guesses it they get the usual Correct message, with a warning not to tell anyone else the answer. Champs are then locked out of the game but non champs can continue to make guesses until one of them wins, or the game ends. If a non champ guesses it first, the game ends for everyone. Reply #24. Nobody guessed last hour's word, but when it was revealed, there was no definition provided. Does this always happen when no one guesses the word? I, for one, would like to see the definition listed on these elusive words especially. Reply #25. Sep 12 23, 12:03 PM |

Two things: 1. I never got an answer to my last question. Anyone know the answer? 2. The new dictionary seems to be in full force. I, for one, cannot think of a word that begins with 'ms" that's not an abbreviation. Are those fair game now in the Crystal Ball game? Reply #26. Sep 19 23, 12:32 PM |

Stonecreek, can't answer your question about the missing definition, but I found a word that starts with ms. There's been some weird ones in the past - those ones tended to have a lot of people as "runners up" because the options are so limited. I've seen "xiii" show up before... "ms" did momentarily throw me, though. I'm so curious to see what the winning word is, and I'm definitely remembering it for next time. Reply #27. Sep 19 23, 12:38 PM |

I expect it will be removed. I know several of the options which have only one or two possible answers were taken out when the game was revamped but this one hadn't come up previously. Reply #28. Sep 19 23, 1:40 PM |

Also, if I recall, Terry just recently said in another chat-board thread that if a word goes unguessed, the game will remove it from play and not use that word in the future. Reply #29. Sep 19 23, 7:55 PM |

With the new dictionary in use, is that limiting the 11 and 12 letter words? Cannot recall seeing a word longer than 10 letters in a while. The game instructions say 4-12 letter words are valid, but I will start restricting my guesses if the odds have changed. Reply #30. Sep 30 23, 12:45 PM |

I got my second crystal ball win in almost 10 years today. Was kind of annoyed because I was really hoping for a prestige point for playing rather than a win and I didn't get one. Reply #31. Oct 09 23, 9:55 AM |

Why did three champions win in the last Crystal ball round? Reply #32. Oct 09 23, 3:09 PM |

Because they won with the blind guess - the first one made. Anyone who guesses in the first 45 minutes is credited with the win under the new rules. Reply #33. Oct 09 23, 4:07 PM |

Thank you, I probably overlooked when reading the rules Reply #34. Oct 09 23, 4:27 PM |

Just to address the glitches above and any others, there were a few when the game rules changed, including one using a capital letter (which made no difference). Missing definitions and the like did happen a few times but it's all settled down now. The only glitch I am aware of is the times when the word was guessed by a champion before the third letter is revealed and it doesn't say so so champions keep on playing to the end only to find the word was guessed early. I hope that's sorted out now as well as if the correct word is played by a champion it won't register. Reply #35. Oct 27 23, 8:39 PM |

Suppose a word like, for example, "Molality" is guessed correctly three times, but then not guessed on its fourth appearance. Will it still be in the database of words that can be used in the future? Reply #36. Nov 08 23, 5:06 PM |

I think it would be a shame to remove *all* words that aren't guessed during the game, as there are so many ordinary words that start with 'dis', 'pro' and 'pre' etc, that the answer could be just about anything, but doesn't necessarily make it unusual or difficult. Reply #37. Nov 10 23, 2:34 AM |

Some people have won Crystal Ball far more than 25 times, but are still being classified as a non-champ. I thought that once someone won the Fortune Teller badge, they would always be classed as a champ. Why is this? Reply #38. Nov 15 23, 10:05 AM |

The label 'Champ' is shown if the guess is made after the :45 mark. If it is made in the first 45 minutes, the Champ label is not shown. It most likely has to do with the way the game is structured, so that after :45, if a Champ guesses the word, non-champs can still play. In the first 45 minutes everyone who guesses correctly gets credit, so the Champ label is irrelevant. Reply #40. Nov 15 23, 12:06 PM |
