Subject: Any strategy for 24-hour mini-badges?

Posted by: ankitankurddit
Date: Aug 30 23

What strategy would you recommend for going after the 24-hour mini-badges? I only have tier 1 on all my 24-hour mini-badges, so I am trying to progress on all my 24-hour mini-badges and ultimately aiming for that alluring Quiz Around The Clock badge!

Firstly, I am working on one tier at a time. So, I am currently working on achieving tier 2 for all 24-hour minis. Also, I am going in the order from the categories I am bad at to the categories I am good at. Is that okay, or would you suggest doing this in some other order?

Also, I found that only the following quiz plays for 24-hour minis:

1) Playing any quiz for the first time ever
2) Replaying any quiz after the 90-day window has elapsed (when we start getting those replay points)

So, replaying any quiz that I had played less than 90 days before today will not count for any of the minis, right?

I tried replaying the quizzes that I had played 20 days back. That did not count. So, I am not sure about the exact magid number (I think that it is 90 days, but I am not sure)

I am not worried about my stronger categories, but I am worried about my weaker categories.

For example, I am currently working on a tier 2 upgrade for one of my weaker categories, So, I am worried about taking quizzes on any topics (in those categories) that I am comfortable with because I feel like I have to preserve those topics when I go for the higher tiers.

So, if you can share any strategies for achieving upgrades on these mini-badges, that will be greatly appreciated.

Also, absolutely love the new system. I just achieved my 13th exploration prestige, and when that pops up, it almost feels like I have achieved a badge. So, an awesome feeling, and I hope you all are having fun as well! :)

Meow! :)

I am in a similar situation to yours. I had only Tier 1 in all 20 of the badgelets yesterday when I decided to upgrade one to earn some prestige points. Tier 2 upgrade required like 400 correct answers, and recently played quizzes in that category would not count. So it's a lot of work, and higher tiers would be even worse. Took me several hours. The only thing I can say is replay old quizzes from more than 3 months ago because you may remember the answers on those, and if you need more to reach the target, search for easier quizzes to do. Because of the "law of diminishing returns" effect of higher tiers in this area, this approach to getting prestige points, while it will work, can become quite burdensome if you rely on it too much. I myself am experimenting with different things to see what will work for me. I strongly doubt I will ever get to the point where I would want to get all the way to Tier 7 in these 24 Hours badgelets because the work would be enormous, and I am sure there are other, better ways of earning prestige points besides going that far.

Too much like hard work for little reward; I'll happily stay on tier 1 for all 20.
I'm not sure there's any better strategy than brm has outlined, it's just a slog.
Good luck.

I'm not entirely sure about the time scale for replaying quizzes for points. I think it might be 60 days. Quizzes which qualify for improving your points tell you this at the top. I'd experiment with one of these to see if it counts.

The higher levels are a slog but I try to incorporate other challenges like Fool Me Once so I can progress on two fronts.

Good luck.

My suggestions - out of personal experience:

- Try to use as many new quizzes as possible in the lower and middle tiers. You get more points that way.
- Mix up categories, don't play all weak ones together, especially if it's not a topic that doesn't interest you (Like my all time favorite "Who played role X or sang title Y"). Doing 400 or 600 of that might be bearable, but if you do all those in a row, you multiply that number.
- Within each category, look for subcategories that feel more interesting. If you don't care about basketball and want sports, maybe the Olympics or Athletics can hold more interest for you.
- Unless your goal is to ultimately have all 20 at tier 7, keep your good categories a tier or two ahead. If you love science and loathe celebrities, you get a favorable question mix that way.
- The less the topic interests you, the more "just quickly play a lot of stuff you can reliably get 4-5 on per quiz" becomes a very viable way to play.
- Combine goals! A few 24 Hrs tiers also make up a major step towards an endurance tier. A daily challenge of "play 186 answers in [category you hate]" is half the way to 400. And as rossian said - for categories you like and maybe don't have much fresh material for, Fool Me Once credits are always a good side quest.

And maybe most important:

- Don't rush it. If you spread out one "around the clock" tier over 2-3 months, you have a fresh slate for replaying when you come back to the next goal. And you won't wear yourself out.

By the way, this is also an excellent kind of question to ask in the Book and Pen - strategies that work for a Guru or Prophet who has played a lot more quizzes, maxed a lot of badges and may have maxed or near-maxed 24h (thus thinking about 1250 and 1500 answers more than 400) as well may not always be 100% applicable to you. Players of similar rank may well have other ideas that actually work better!

I believe Rossian is correct in saying the time frame is 60 days even though it might say 90. Not for this specific challenge, but I've had it come up and noted that even though the 'counter' might say you can play again in 31 days, a couple of days later the same quiz is eligible.

Re progressing one category all the way (or as high as you want to go) and then beginning work on another category - if you work on all categories for their next tier, it will help with the replay lag since by the time you finish all 20 categories (or however many you want to work on), the 60 day limit might be expired or very close.

I have them all between levels 3 and 6 so hopefully my strategies may help you.

First, learn what type of pace you can maintain and make sure you have the time to play enough. If you can get 100 questions per hour correct, then make sure you'll have 4 hours to devote to it to get to level 2. This obviously becomes more important at higher levels. And decide if you want to prioritize it over other things on the site like team games or if you have the time to do both.

As Wesley said, look to combine it with something like a daily challenge. Another thing I find helpful is to try and take quizzes that are parts of quiz lists. That way you can claim a bunch of quiz lists and advance in tiers there too. I have over 1000 quiz lists claimed and a lot of them were claimed while advancing in 24 hour badges. I often spend a little extra time just going through quiz lists finding quizzes in the category I'm working on. Remember, though, that you need 50% correct to get credit for the quiz list.

@brm50diboll and @samak - Thank you! Okay, I will keep an open mind wrt proceeding to higher tiers of these 24-hour minis, and I will take a more balanced approach.

@rossian - Oh, I see. I will experiment a bit with the replay window of quizzes for these challenges. Also, working on Fool Me Once in parallel makes sense. I will try to find the quizzes that I had taken in the past and had scored low, so it can help with both the 24-hour and Fool Me Once challenges. Thanks very much for your suggestions!

@WesleyCrusher - Thank you very much for these suggestions. I will change my plan to mixing categories. I just tried mixing, and I feel more relaxed. Also, I do have some good sub-categories in almost all 20 categories, so I will start focusing on those sub-categories. Endurance has been one of my favorite badges since I joined FT, and I only have tier 1 of Endurance. So, it will be cool to work on Endurance alongside the 24-hour challenges. I will also post this on the Book and Pen. I already got what I was looking for here, but it will be good to have a feeling of camaraderie among folks who have a similar rank. So, off I go to the Book and Pen. Thanks again! :)

@Dagny1 - 60-day time frame sounds really good. Thanks a ton for sharing that! :) Also, yes, I will not go for one mini from tier 2 to tier 7. That will not give me the benefits of replaying quizzes after the 60-day time frame. I might need that replay feature, especially for my tough categories!

@andymuenz - Thanks a lot for sharing these strategies. I was just doing the Brain Teasers tier 2 mini today, and I pinned two quiz lists alongside. I did not get them because of not fulfill the 50 percent, but I missed the 50 percent in just one or two quizzes. So, I will get those quiz lists soon. Also, as you and others suggested, finding balance is important, and I will do that.

Thank you everyone once again for these strategies. I will surely start implementing these suggestions in my two to three-month journey to getting these 24-hour minis! :)

I'm thinking about trying to upgrade all the minis as well. I'm coming up with strategies, and so far I've got the following:

1) Do the "worst" ones (the categories I dislike the most) first. Probably get them up to tier 4 before I start upgrading any of the others. Then once every mini is up to Tier 4, go back to the first categories and take them up to tier 7.

2) Break it down into chunks. 50 correct answers at a time.

3) Pick days where I know I can commit. Most probably weekends only, but it's a marathon, not a sprint, right?

I'll find out if that's good self-advice or not!

If you haven’t done the Cool Zooms challenge, there are 50 quizzes in General, each with 20 questions, totalling 1000 answers. For the Cool Zoom badge you need to score 50% on all quizzes for a minimum of 500 correct answers. Not too much of a stretch to complete CZ and get the first two tiers of 24 Hrs of General concurrently if you split the activity over two days. :)

The phrase that comes to mind, probably completely unhelpful to most but a few of you will get it,

“Pot as many balls as you can”
