Does anyone know what these are, or how we get them?

What's more worrying is that I was able to pick them out so quickly!

I didn't have the same level of pervert expertise. It was fun trying to guess though!

Another portal has just opened.
I think they may be using the same dictionary as in Mind Melt.

Terry wrote: "Apologies for the system randomly choosing the category “pervert” for a mystery box earlier today. It has been removed from the dictionary!!"

Thanks, Terry!

As MissCirrus said in reply #60, I was a little startled, too. I didn't realize the system randomly chose categories. Interesting! That makes sense, though, upon reflection.

Anyway, thanks again!

I have not seen any "mystery box" on my home page. I am using Daily & Hourly Game Version. When one opens is it for everyone?

Rumpo, you should see it at the upper left, under your user name, under the FunTrivia clown logo.

There is one, as I write this, and, yes it is visible in the Daily and Hourly game version. It randomly appears at the same time for everyone, and is visible for sixty minutes. Your current level enables you to play once per day.

Check five minutes past each hour. The more you check, the more likely you are to see one.

It will say "A Mysterious Portal Has Opened" right under your name.

If you log on using your phone, you might need to turn it to "landscape" view - the link may not show up in "portrait". It is also just a link so the typeface is small - blink and it's easy to overlook.

We all need mystery in our lives, no matter how pragmatic we may claim to be. Human history is full of mysteries, such as who built Stonehenge, will the Kraken gobble you up, and what on earth did grandma put in her spaghetti sauce to make it taste that good?

So it is that FT has mysteries. How do you get to El Dorado? Where's the Official Stories thread? and Will I Ever Get ABBA out of my head? And now we have Mystery Boxes. Half the fun is finding some, the other half is getting them right. Please don't analyse them to death. Or spoil other people's fun by trying to work out a calendar in full view on the boards. Do it in your head if you want to, on the back of an envelope, or in a spreadsheet - but not here.

Oh and if you think that Terry's brain is simple enough to stick to a regular three times a day = eight hours apart, think again. :)

Well said!
Half the fun is waiting for one to turn up. Even though I just need one more to try to get the badge and I haven't caught one all week.

Finally got a portal and opened it. Only got 14 of 16 but at least I know what to look for now.

I love the Mystery Boxes! At my level, I only have the chance to see one per day, so I often miss them. Anyway, I'd say about 50% of the time, I'm baffled by some of the connections, but it's always a great learning experience as I learn new connotations of words. Always a fun challenge!

Yes, they are fun, albeit confusing to me. My brain often takes off in the wrong direction with words which can mean drastically different things.

My brain does the same thing, Dagny. There are so many meanings for the word "go," for example. Often, even after I see the solution to a Mystery Box, I still don't understand some of the connections. But I'm always excited to see one and give it a ... er ... go. ;-)
