Subject: Rollin' Rollin' Rollin' Down the Highway

I'm old and a bit crotchety and particular, I'll admit, but I can't seem to hit the streets these days without coming upon one more poor driver. I hate the constant lane changing, the weaving in and out of traffic (when we both end up at the same spotlight at the same time). (Honk-honk!)
Hey, you faux Dale Earnhardts and Stirling Mosses, stay off my lawn, sure, but also respect my boulevards!

Anything irritate you about your fellow motorists?

I should have said 'stop light' instead of 'spotlight.' Just so you'll know: I have a vision restriction on my license!

Drivers who are mysterious about their intentions.
First, they have their left turn light on for five blocks (no turns), then they switch it to signal a right turn (still no turns). After a few more blocks, they turn it off entirely, and may, or may not, make a turn.

The ones who take great pains to pass you, only to pull in front of you and slow down. Also the ones asleep at the switch when the light turns green and it takes them 5-10 seconds to sober up and hit the gas.

Two irritations from just this morning:

Drivers who create gridlock (in a campus area where students cross streets while looking at their phones--now there's a recipe for disaster).
People who don't know how to or don't care to merge gracefully into traffic from a side street. I was moving in the proper lane to turn right, and he nearly pushed me on down the road.

Bah, humbug (but not VW Bugs--they're pretty decent)!

saratogarox, I truly think many drivers don't understand the function of lanes. Suburban streets are not an obstacle course for those people to weave in and out of. Find a pace and a place, and maintain it!

I really sound like a curmudgeon, but I just want to stay alive a bit longer. :)

It irritates me when people don't use their turn signals or when they pull out into the road without looking. I also hate people who try to speed through a light on a yellow. Invariably those people end up going through a red light, and there's never a cop around to ticket them. That's how people end up in accidents! I've seen more than a dozen cars run red lights here in the past week.

Someone attempted to make a completely blind left-turn from behind an SUV and cross a lane I was in back in April, pulling straight out in front of me when I was not 20 feet away from them going 40 mph (the speed limit in what was to my view a completely clear lane), resulting in both our cars being totaled and weeks of physical pain and months of PTSD. And the other driver had the nerve to argue with the state highway patrol officer when the officer told him that HE was at fault for the accident, not me.

Just try not to get road rage, keep your own wits about you, look and signal before you turn or merge lanes, and always, always, always wear your seatbelt. It saves lives! It saved mine, that's for sure.

Something I have found that really helps me maintain my calm is to say to myself “I am not IN traffic, I AM traffic”.

kaddarsgirl, turning left in facing traffic requires a lot of attention and no little forethought, and I wonder how many drivers think beyond their own immediate need to get to their destination?

I'm so sorry about your accident, and I hope you're recovering well now, though I know such an upset can cause considerable emotional as well and financial and physical damage. My thoughts are with you!

Road rage: There's marriage advice that tells a person or persons not to go to bed mad; hey, don't get in the car mad, either!

agony, I love it, and I'll use it every time I'm behind the wheel: "I AM traffic"!
