Wodehouse PG Trivia Questions

1. At the start of the novel, Jeeves is trying to persuade Bertie to do what?

From Quiz
The Code of the Woosters

Answer: Go on a round-the-world cruise

Several of the Wooster/Jeeves stories employ a similar thread, in which at the start of the book Jeeves is trying to persuade Bertie to do something which he doesn't want to do. The story invariably ends with Bertie giving in, and accepting that Jeeves is (as always) right. Needless to say, "The Code of the Woosters" concludes with Bertie and Jeeves going on the cruise.

2. What is the first name of Jeeves?

From Quiz Characters From 'Jeeves'

Answer: Reginald

Jeeves' first name wasn't revealed until 56 years after the first novel in the series was published. We learn his first name in the novel 'Much Obliged, Jeeves' which was released in 1971. Jeeves is a valet to Bertie Wooster.

3. When Jeeves entered into Wooster's service, he managed to impress Wooster immediately. What was it about Jeeves that impressed Wooster?.

From Quiz Jeeves and Wooster

Answer: Jeeves' sleek and noiseless style of walking, unlike the sloppy walking style of his previous valet Meadowes

In the first episode, Jeeves portrayed himself as a very efficient valet, and Wooster hired him instantly. At this time, Wooster knew little of Jeeves's problem solving abilities. Yet Jeeves saved Wooster from peril relating to a nasty task he was assigned to do for Florence Craye, the girl Bertie was engaged to. It involved stealing and destroying a manuscript written by Bertie's uncle Willoughby titled "Recollections of a Long Life". The manuscript contained adventures of uncle Willoughby and his friends (one of whom was Florence Craye's father) in their youth. Since these characters acted in their youthful spirit committing those silly playful offenses young men generally commit in P.G Wodehouse novels, Florence Craye wanted the manuscript destroyed and commanded Wooster to do so. You can read this episode, the very first one in the "Jeeves and Wooster" series, in 'Carry on Jeeves', chapter titled 'Jeeves Takes Charge'.

4. Another impostor at Blandings? Sir Roderick Glossop has arrived at Blandings along with his niece and secretary. But the efficient Baxter suspects! And to add to this, the Duke of Dunstable plots to steal the Empress. Which novel features this plot?

From Quiz Wodehouse Plots and Titles

Answer: Uncle Fred in the Springtime

'Uncle Fred in the Springtime' was first published in 1939. This Blandings novel features Lord Ickenham (Uncle Fred). Ickenham visits Blandings as Sir Roderick Glossop along with his nephew Pongo. He does so to unite Polly Pott with the Duke of Dunstable's nephew. But Baxter suspects and Uncle Fred has to use all his ingenuity to ensure that the lovers are united and all goes well.

5. A is for Alaric, Duke of Dunstable who likes to drop in at Blandings without invitation. Who among the following is Alaric's rich nephew who is a member of the Drones?

From Quiz A-Z Wodehouse

Answer: Horace Davenport

Horace 'Pendlebury' Davenport is the rich nephew of the Duke of Dunstable, engaged to Valerie Twistleton, Lord Ickenham's niece. We meet Horace in 'Uncle Fred in the Springtime'. Ricky Gilpin is one of Alaric's impoverished nephews. Pongo is Ickenham's nephew and Ronnie Fish is Lord Emsworth's nephew.

6. What is the name of Lord Ickenham's wife?

From Quiz PG Wodehouse's Ickenham

Answer: Jane

Ickenham is married to an American named Jane.

7. When Jeeves first reports for duty, to whom is Bertie Wooster engaged?

From Quiz Carry on Jeeves

Answer: Florence Craye

In 'The Inimitable Jeeves', a collection of short stories, we are first introduced to Jeeves. When he joins Wooster's service, Bertie is engaged to Florence Craye. Of course, Jeeves wastes no time in breaking up the engagement!

8. How many sisters does Lord Emsworth have?

From Quiz Blandings Parva

Answer: Nine

Surprising but true! Lord Emsworth has nine sisters. We are familiar with Constance, Julia, Hermione, Charlotte and Dora, but there are others too - Ann Warblington, Diana, Florence and Georgiana. This doesn't include Jane (deceased). This is revealed in the Emsworth family tree in 'Sunset at Blandings'.

9. In the story 'The Coming of Gowf', what was the name of King Merolchazzar's kingdom?

From Quiz "Fore!" P.G's a Jolly Good Fellow

Answer: Oom

According to the 'blurb' on the back of my copy of 'The Clicking of Cuthbert' this story was 'never before published except on a paving-stone of the Babylonian epoch'. In this little story, the people of the Kingdom of Oom all come to love the strange game of Gowf. King Merolochazzar falls in love with the Princess of the Outer isles and they all live happily ever after. 'Om' is a chant and Belus and Hec are Oomnian deities called on by the King when interrupted practising.

10. One of Wodehouse's most memorable characters is Bertie Wooster, employer of Jeeves, one of the brighter sparks of the Drones, winner of a prize for Scripture knowledge and hapless fiance of some fearsome women. What is his middle name?

From Quiz The World of Wodehouse

Answer: Wilberforce

One wonders if he was named in honour of the Hull man who was such a force in the British abolishing slavery? William Ewart Gladstone was a British Prime Minister in the Victorian era and General Montgomery the leader of the 'Desert Rats' of the Second World War. You may have seen the excellent Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry 'Jeeves and Wooster', but please believe me, the books are immeasurably better!

11. How would you address Emsworth's sister Hermione?

From Quiz Galahad at Blandings

Answer: Lady Hermione

As Hermione looks exactly like a cook, some funny situations occur in some of the Wodehouse novels.

12. What is the Earl's gardener's name?

From Quiz Blandings Castle

Answer: Angus McAllister

Angus McAllister is a dour Glasgwegian with a particular liking for making Scotch noises, and an unfufilled wish, alas, of making a yew alley in the gardens of Blandings Castle.

13. What club do Mike and Psmith join on their first day at Sedleigh?

From Quiz The World of Psmith

Answer: Archaeological Society

They joined the Archaeological Society partly to curry favor with Mr. Outwood, who was in charge of it, and partly to avoid having to play cricket at Sedleigh.

14. What is a drone?

From Quiz Welcome to the Drones' Club

Answer: Lazy bee

Hence of course-the Drones.

15. What is the relationship between Wooster and Jeeves?

From Quiz Jeeves and Wooster

Answer: Jeeves is Wooster's valet.

If you couldn't answer this one, you probably didn't get any of the others right, either.

16. Blandings Castle was the setting for several of Wodehouse's novels. Which earl resides at this idyllic castle?

From Quiz Wodehouse Wizardry

Answer: Lord Emsworth

Clarence, 9th Earl of Emsworth, is an absent-minded old man, who is somewhat obsessed with his prize pig, Empress of Blandings.

17. What is the name of Aunt Dahlia's French chef, whose potential loss is a recurring theme of this book (and several others)?

From Quiz The Code of the Woosters

Answer: Anatole

Anatole's culinary prowess is legendary, and Aunt Dahlia treasures him greatly, as does Bertie, who is always trying to wrangle a visit to her house at around about dinner time. Sadly, Anatole's fame is such that he is often in danger of being inveigled to leave Aunt Dahlia's employment for a better offer elsewhere.

18. Augustus Fink-Nottle first appears in which 'Jeeves' novel?

From Quiz Characters From 'Jeeves'

Answer: Right Ho, Jeeves

'Right Ho, Jeeves' is the second novel in the series and was first realeased in 1934. It follows Bertie to Brinkley Court where he finds himself having to restore and rebuild the relationships of his old friends. Augustus Fink-Nottle has a face like a fish and keeps newts. He appears in all the novels mentioned in this question.

19. Why did Aunt Dahlia call Bertie 'Attila' in "Right Ho Jeeves"?

From Quiz Jeeves and Wooster

Answer: Bertie with his schemes succeeded in worsening the situation instead of solving it, just like 'Attila', a chap in a story famous for spreading ruin and desolation in peaceful homes.

This is taken from "Right Ho Jeeves". Wooster in this episode made schemes which succeeded in making things worst for Aunt Dahlia rather then solving problems. His rift with Jeeves relating to the latter's disapproval of Bertie's white jacket with brass buttons led Bertie to become firm and proud with Jeeves, thus losing Jeeves advisory services. Wooster's schemes aimed at reuniting Tuppy Glossup with Angela and Gussie with Madeline Bassett. However with a complicated sequence of events, what happened was Gussie Fink-Nottle got engaged to Angela, Anatole the temperamental French cook choose to leave his employment and Bertie got engaged to Madeline Bassett. Well, finally Jeeves solved these problems and also burned Bertie's white jacket laying an iron on it for a long while. However, Bertie could only say, "Right ho, Jeeves!", knowing that it was useless battling with Jeeves.

20. Bertie is at Brinkley to help his friend win an election. Also at Brinkley are Madeline Basset and Florence Craye. Add to this the slimy Bingley and only Jeeves can save the day. Can you guess the name of this novel?

From Quiz Wodehouse Plots and Titles

Answer: Much Obliged Jeeves

'Much Obliged Jeeves' was first published in 1971 and features Bertie at Brinkley as a guest of Aunt Dahlia. Bertie's friend Ginger is contesting an election and accompanying him is his fiancée Florence Craye. Campaigning for Ginger is Lord Sidcup (Roderick Spode) and with him is his fiancee Madeline Basset. Bertie's old valet Bingley has got hold of the (in)famous Junior Ganymede club book. The resulting chaos leads to Bertie getting engaged to both Florence and Madeline. Everything ends well with Jeeves finally tearing off the pages about Bertie from the club book.

21. B is for Bertie Wooster, one of the most popular characters created by Plum. Bertie keeps getting engaged and has to rely on Jeeves to get out of his entanglements. Who among the following was not engaged to Bertie?

From Quiz A-Z Wodehouse

Answer: Sue Brown

Bertie was engaged among others to Madeline Basset, Honoria Glossop and Florence Craye. However, he was never engaged to Sue Brown. Ronnie Fish was engaged to Sue Brown ('Summer Lightning' and 'Heavy Weather').

22. What is Lord Ickenham's surname?

From Quiz PG Wodehouse's Ickenham

Answer: Twistleton

Uncle Fred's full name is Fredrick Altamont Cornawallis Twistleton, Earl of Ickenham.

23. Who among the following is Bertie Wooster's friend who is connected with Blandings Castle?

From Quiz Carry on Jeeves

Answer: Tipton Plimsoll

Tipton Plimsoll (who appears in 'Full Moon' and 'Galahad at Blandings') is married to Veronica Wedge, niece of Lord Emsworth of Blandings Castle. In 'Aunts aren't Gentlemen', Bertie mentions that his friend Tipton has referred him to Doctor Murgatroyd.

24. Who among the following was not Lord Emsworth's secretary?

From Quiz Blandings Parva

Answer: Pongo Twistleton

Baxter is first introduced as Emsworth's secretary in 'Something Fresh', Carmody in 'Summer Lightning' and Bodkin in 'Heavy Weather'. Pongo did visit Blandings Castle but as Roderick Glossop's (actually Lord Ickenham) secretary (Basil).

25. Bertie Wooster was always getting engaged (normally without his desire, consent and sometimes even knowledge). Who is the lady he has been affianced to several times, who thinks that 'every time a fairy hiccoughs a wee baby is born'?

From Quiz The World of Wodehouse

Answer: Madeline Basset

Honoria Glossop and Florence Craye were both very strong-minded women who want to change Bertie, and Bobbie Wickham is a lively red-headed lady with all the temperament you would expect from that shade. Madeline Basset, on the other hand, was described by Bertie as 'from topknot to shoe sole, The Woman Whom God Forgot'. Because of a hideous mix-up, Madeline thought Bertie was proposing to her, when he was pleading his friend Gussie's case. For a long time Bertie felt he was in the hideous position of a US Vice-President - if anything happened to the main man, Bertie would be in the hot seat.

26. Waht is "Tuppy" Glossop's real first name?

From Quiz Bertie's Buddies

Answer: Hildebrand

Marmaduke is the name of Lord Chuffnell, one of Bertie's old school buddies. Reginald is Jeeves' first name. Augustus, obviously, is Gussie Fink-Nottle's full first name. "Tuppy" is overly fond of eating and is forever engaged to Angela Bassett.

27. What's Galahad's proper name?

From Quiz Galahad at Blandings

Answer: The Honourable Galahad Threepwood

Full of beans, and the exact opposite of Clarence, Galahad's name is a byword in London.

28. Who is Lord Emsworth's direct heir?

From Quiz Blandings Castle

Answer: Bosham

Freddie Threepwood is Lord Emsworth's younger son, while Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe is Emsworth's rival in all major regional competitions.

29. How many runs did Mike make in the Outwood's vs Downing's cricket game?

From Quiz The World of Psmith

Answer: 277

Most of the school had not realised that Mike even played cricket before that game.

30. Which accent would guardian angels to the Drones' Club speak with?
