9. According to Lennon and McCartney, the wielder of the "Silver Hammer" might well have been a direct blood relative of "The Wizard of Menlo Park", (the inventor of the phonograph alongside many other things). So, what was Maxwell's surname?

From Quiz FunTrivia Music Mix: Vol 7

Answer: Edison

The lyrics in question are those of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" penned by Lennon and McCartney, and the phrase which reveals his surname is "Maxwell Edison, majoring in medicine". I have read somewhere that the lyrics to this song are allegorical, and that the silver hammer in question is simply a metaphor for Maxwell's crushing wit. I can't quite buy that, and still think that he is in fact a homicidal maniac, as per his actions described in the lyrics. Thomas Edison was known as "The Wizard of Menlo Park", a fitting tribute to his ingenuity and inventions which were many and widely varied.

11. What kind of eyes does Van Morrison's 1967 girl have?

From Quiz FunTrivia Music Mix: Vol 5

Answer: Brown

"Brown Eyed Girl" is the signature song by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame living legend Van Morrison. It was recorded on March 28, 1967 and released by Bang records as a 45 RPM single in June of that year. According to various biographies, the song was about a Jamaican girl Morrison knew, and was originally titled "Brown Skinned Girl." The producer was another colossus of the early rock era named Bert Berns, who flew Morrison from his native Belfast to the recording session in New York City. Morrison has since maintained that Berns tricked him into an unfair contract with Bang and ironically, Berns died six months later before the issue was resolved. Morrison also claims to have never received any royalties from writing or recording the song.

16. 'Mr. Brightside' was a song released by which group?

From Quiz Music Throughout Time

Answer: The Killers

'Mr. Brightside' is a song by The Killers which featured in their album 'Hot Fuss'.

17. An Australian entertainer had the last number one hit of the '60s on the UK singles chart with an awful song written around 1903. Here is a snippet of the lyrics, you pick the artist. "Long years past, war came so fast Bravely they marched away"

From Quiz Don't Sing Me That! Volume II

Answer: Rolf Harris

"Two Little Boys" was written by Theodore F. Morse/Edward Madden in or around 1903. It was number one for six weeks for Rolf Harris in 1969. It did not chart in the US. The song is about two childhood friends who go to war, although which war has been open to speculation ever since. It is rumoured that John Lennon sent Rolf Harris a telegram congratulating him on getting an anti-Vietnam war song to number one at Christmas 1969. As it was written in 1903 by two Americans, it may well be about the American civil war. Besides thinking the song was just as Rolf Harris said on first hearing the song ("namby-pamby and awful"), I dislike it even more because of its connection with Margaret Thatcher; she picked it as her favourite song on BBC Radio Blackburn in 1979. That killed it stone dead. Question submitted by shipyardbernie.

18. A song which really makes me cringe ends with the lyrics "I hope some day you'll join us, And the world will live as one". What's the name of the song and who's the artist?

From Quiz Don't Sing Me That!

Answer: "Imagine" by John Lennon

Lennon said that Yoko Ono's poetry was such an influence on his lyrics to "Imagine" that she deserved co-writer status, although she didn't get any credit at the time of the release. Ono, along with Phil Spector, was credited as co-producer, however. The tune itself is only offensive in its inoffensiveness, but it's really the sappy lyrics and pseudo emotional depth that rile me. I have tried following John's advice and imagined a world without all the things he rather nonchalantly disdains, and I have to say it's just a big nothingness. The bit that really gets my goat though is "imagine no possessions", sung by an enormously wealthy rock star. Question submitted by thula2

19. This musical story was written in the early 40s about a rather overweight brass instrument. The most popular version was recorded by Danny Kaye in 1947 using his great ability to produce a range of voices. What is the name of the story?

From Quiz Hello Children, Everywhere! #1

Answer: Tubby the Tuba

Paul Tripp and George Kleinsinger wrote the story in the early 40s but it wasn't released until after World War ll when it became an instant hit. It was ideal material for the brilliant Danny Kaye whose version has become the most famous. Since then the story has been played by many orchestras, narrated by stars and translated into other languages. It has been used as a clue in the New York Times crossword, made into films and the ultimate accolade in 2006 was to be included in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry as one of the landmarks in American Audio History. Tubby must be "so happy".
