Queensland Trivia Questions

1. One of the many attractions on the Gold Coast is its world-famous wildlife sanctuary. What is its name?

From Quiz
Queensland's Wonderful Gold Coast

Answer: Currumbin

Founded in 1947, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many different native Australian species, including birds, mammals, and reptiles. Every day, in the morning and the afternoon, the public are invited to help feed wild rainbow lorikeets in an event that is free to attend and highly popular. Visitors can also pay to experience close encounters with wildlife, such as crocodile feeding (no, the visitors are not fed to the crocs), dingo walks, and being photographed with koalas.

2. Brisbane, rather unsurprisingly, is located on which river?

From Quiz Beautiful Brisbane

Answer: Brisbane

The Brisbane River is the longest river in the south east of the large state of Queensland. This lovely old river is rather slow moving as it meanders its way down to the sea. Unless it's in flood of course. Then it's a thing of terror. The Brissy river, as it is fondly named by the locals, was once noted for its gracious scenery, its fish and the beautiful wild birds that inhabited its banks. Although the scenery and the birds still exist, the fish are possibly gasping for breath by now. The waters aren't exactly blue and pristine looking. It's a capital city though, and all that entails. Catamarans, barges and ferries ply its length on a regular basis, and water skiers delight in its non-threatening waters. The odd shark or two still ventures up its length now and then as well.

3. What is the highest point in Brisbane?

From Quiz Brisbane: World City

Answer: Mount Coot-tha

Mount Coot-tha stands 287 metres above sea level, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Moreton Bay, the mouth of the Brisbane River. Mount Coot-tha derives its name from ku-ta, the local aboriginal term for 'place of honey'.

22. Ipswich in Queensland was known as Coodjirar in one of the local Aboriginal languages, which has the floral meaning of "the place of the ___"?

From Quiz Ipswich, Queensland

Answer: Red stemmed gum

The red stemmed gum, which is also known as the Sydney red gum, rusty gum or smooth-barked apple, grows proficiently along the banks of the river running through the city of Ipswich. The name Coodjirar comes from the local Yugarabul language (also known as Ugarapul), one of the two main Aboriginal languages of south-east Queensland. The other is Jagara, also known as Jagera and Yagara. Apart from the Ipswich City Council boundaries, the region for this language also extends to Scenic Rim Regional Council and the Brisbane City Council. The first European to explore the Ipswich area was Captain Patrick Logan in 1826. Logan was the commander of the Moreton Bay penal colony at the time. The settlement was established a year later with the name Limestone Hills, which would be changed to Ipswich, after the town in England, in 1843.

25. On which popular hill, situated in the middle of Brisbane, are the main television towers located?

From Quiz Beautiful Brisbane

Answer: Mount Coot-tha

Though given the honorary title of a mountain, Mount Coot-tha is more of a hill really. You can easily drive to the top, or ride a pushbike if you're feeling energetic. It only rises 287 metres above sea level, which, for some peculiar reason, always embarrasses me if I have to give its height, BUT there's a wonderful advantage to its stubbiness. There are glorious views right out over Brisbane, far more intimate than those of a much taller mountain - and at night, that view all over the glittering wonderland below, is just breathtaking. Mount Coot-tha is known for its parks, the odd waterfall or two, and its television and radio towers.

26. Brisbane covers an area of approximately 1482 square kilometers, which is about the same size as which populous European city?

From Quiz Brisbane: World City

Answer: Milan, Italy

Milan, Italy covers a slightly smaller area of 1464 square kilometers. In 2016, however, it had a population almost double that of Brisbane at almost 4 million people.

27. The second of our Indooroopilly bridges carries rail traffic and was constructed as part of the quadruplication of the Ipswich line between Roma Street and Corinda. By what name is this bridge known?

From Quiz Brisbane's Burgeoning Bridges

Answer: The bridge has no official name

Believe it or not, the bridge has no official name! Queensland Rail (QR), who operates the bridge, states that they call it the 'Indooroopilly Rail Bridge'. However, as stated above, the bridge was never officially named when it opened in June 1958. During construction, QR simply referred to it as the 'new bridge'. As this is a contentious local issue, my source (which cites the Lord Mayor's office and QR on the subject) is as follows: http://www.abc.net.au/brisbane/stories/s1727736.htm Of the other choices, the Bremer Bridge does not exist, however, its name is a corruption of Ipswich's Bremer River Bridge. The Bremer River flows into the Brisbane River at a junction named Barella Point, which is upstream from the first bridge in this quiz. The Westgate Bridge is located in Melbourne, and was the site of a bridge collapse during construction in 1970, killing 35 workers. The Pamphlett Bridge crosses Oxley Creek, a tributary of the Brisbane River, in the suburb of Tennyson.

28. With a population of around 20,000 this town can lay claim to being the childhood home of both Patrick Rafter and Greg Norman.

From Quiz Queensland Towns

Answer: Mt Isa

Mount Isa is among the world's largest cities in the world by area, as an example, the town of Camooweal located 188km to the west is actually a suburb of the city. Mount Isa is also of course famous for its vast mineral deposits of silver, lead, copper and zinc and associated mining operations.
