Movies: Something in Common Trivia Questions

1. In "Titanic" (1997), a search team inspecting the wreckage of the ship finds a safe. They are hoping it contains a large valuable jewel which was on the ship when it sank. Instead of a jewel, what do they find?

From Quiz
Storied Films: Stories within Stories

Answer: A drawing

When the search team opens the safe, they find only a drawing of a young woman wearing the necklace with the jewel that they are seeking. The sketch is dated April 14, 1912, the same day the Titanic struck the iceberg that caused it to sink. The woman in the sketch survived the disaster and hears about its discovery. She contacts the search team and recounts the story of her voyage. "Titanic" was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 11 including Best Picture. With an initial worldwide box office gross of over $1.8 billion, it was the first film to reach the billion-dollar mark.

2. Which technique did Daniel Larusso use as decisive move in the finals of the "All Valley Tournament", in the first instalment of the movie series?

From Quiz Desperate Measures

Answer: Crane technique

"The Karate Kid" (1984) told the story of Daniel Larusso, a 17 year old kid who moved from New Jersey to California. He fell for the charms of Ali Mills, and thus angered Ali's ex-boyfriend Johnny Lawrence. Johnny and some of his fellows from the karate school Cobra Kai then harassed Daniel every time they met. At the Halloween prom, it escalated to a major fight, and the janitor Mr. Miyagi saved Daniel by knocking down Johnny and his four comrades. Mr. Miyagi then suggested to confront Johnny's teacher Kreese, but they did not agree on ending the feud. Mr. Miyagi then convened a truce with the Cobra Kai gang while he would train Daniel for the "All Valley Tournament" - a karate competition for juniors (up to 18 years). Daniel did at first not understand the training ("wax the car" or "paint the fence" to learn blocking moves). At the tournament, Daniel progressed to the semi-finals, as also did Johnny. Johnny won his semi-finals without any effort, but Daniel only won because his opponent (one of the Cobra Kai gang) was disqualified for deliberately injuring Daniel's leg. In the finals Johnny once again hit Daniel's injured leg, and Daniel could hardly stand straight. So Daniel took on the crane stance: hopping on one foot, arms spread out above the head - a very vulnerable stance. As Johnny attacked, Daniel jumped up and kicked Johnny in the face. Ralph Macchio played Daniel, and Noriyuki Pat Morita played Mr. Miyagi. Other roles were for Elisabeth Shue (Ali) and William Zabka (Johnny). A reverse punch is a punch with the rear fist. The front sweep is a kick to the leg on which your opponent balances, and plays a part in "The Karate Kid Part III". The drum technique is a fictitious attack tactic: alternating blocks from one side and from the other side, as demonstrated in "The Karate Kid Part II".

3. The first movie in this list is also one of only two animated ones. Which Pixar film took us through a wide range of emotions in just the first few minutes, leaving us devastated as a devoted husband deals with the loss of his beloved wife?

From Quiz When Tears Are In Your Eyes

Answer: Up

"Up" was released to critical acclaim and won two Academy Awards and was nominated for another three including Best Picture, becoming only the second animated move ever to be nominated in that category after Disney's "Beauty and the Beast". "Up" follows senior citizen Carl Frederickson and his attempt to fulfill his late wife's wish to visit Paradise Falls by attaching thousands of helium balloons to his house. Adventure and danger await him in South America as he discovers a childhood idol may not be the hero he always thought.

4. "They're coming to get you Barbara." This was said in a graveyard by the girl's brother. What black and white film is it from?

From Quiz Zombies from Heaven

Answer: Night of the Living Dead

This was George Romero's first feature film released in 1968. The film begins in a graveyard with a brother and sister getting attacked by some of the dead rising. The brother is killed and the girl escapes to a nearby farmhouse, to shelter in with others, who are also trying to escape zombies.

5. At the end of "Casablanca" (1942), who shoots Major Stasser?

From Quiz Best Movie Endings of All Time

Answer: Rick Blaine

"Casablanca" (1942) is the best romantic film ever, with one of the best screenplays ever. It stars Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine, a disillusioned bar owner; Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa, his former lover; Paul Henreid as Ilsa's husband Victor, and Claude Rains as police captain Louis Renault. At the end of the film, Rick gives up Ilsa so she can be with Victor. Rick shoots Strasser, the leader of the Nazi troops, so that Victor and Ilsa can escape. Renault covers up Rick's crime - "Major Strasser has been shot. Round up the usual suspects." The film closes with Rick and Renault planning to leave Casablanca for Brazzaville. "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." The films contains several of the best lines ever, as designated by the American Film Institute, including the last line and "Here's looking at you, kid." "Casblanca" won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Bogart and Raines were nominated for their performances, but lost. Bergman was not nominated as Ilsa, one of the biggest snubs in Oscar history.

6. "Running in high heels" In high heels, Bryce Dallas Howard spent the majority of which "Jurassic Park" movie running away from dinosaurs?

From Quiz That's So Cliché

Answer: Jurassic World

Clare Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is the operations manager of a park called Jurassic World. When one of the dinosaurs escapes, Claire and Owen (Chris Pratt) spend the movie chasing dinosaurs and running away from dinosaurs. In an interview for "The Daily Beast", Bryce said it was "a feminist statement to run around in high heels. The thing that would have been considered the biggest handicap for her ultimately ends up being her strength. And that's those heels. I really liked that." As for fighting in high heels, Florence Pugh said that's one of the things an audience would never see her doing.

7. Jason Bateman fills in for Michael J. Fox in what 1987 sequel about a supernatural transformation?

From Quiz The Sequel was Terrible!

Answer: Teen Wolf Too

While the original 1985 film "Teen Wolf" starred Michael J. Fox in his moviemaking prime, "Teen Wolf Too" was released two years later in an attempt to strike the iron while it was hot, and it didn't really turn out to be too great. Jason Bateman took the lead in the sequel (in his first film role) playing Michael J. Fox's cousin who, naturally, possessed the same werewolf genes. The movie featured a musical number midway through as Bateman and the crew danced to The Contours' "Do You Love Me" for next to no real reason. The movie flopped critically; while the original made $80,000,000 USD in the box office, the sequel made under $8,000,000.

8. In the 1978 film "Up In Smoke", Cheech Marin's character Pedro is surprised by Tommy Chong when Tommy tells him about the "special ingredient" in the pot they're smoking. What is the "special ingredient?"

From Quiz Hollyweed: Pot Smoking In The Movies

Answer: Dog poop

Chong tells Cheech that his Labrador Retriever ate his bag of marijuana. So he followed him around waiting for the dog to "pass" the stash. Cheech is so stoned he doesn't mind, and replies, "I wonder what Great Dane tastes like."

9. When the man takes an arrow to the leg, it's only a matter of time before the boy is alone in the wasteland in what 2009 film?

From Quiz Out of Time

Answer: The Road

Based on the bestselling novel from Nobel Prize winner Cormac McCarthy, "The Road" starred Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the man and the boy, two unnamed characters striving to survive in a post-extinction wasteland. Forced to fend for themselves against the odds, the movie watched as their time together ran down after time had already run out. Premiering at the Venice International Film Festival, "The Road" was well-received, built on the bleak world pulled directly from McCarthy's novel and the performances of its two leads.

10. Sean Connery had abandoned the role of James Bond for 12 years before reprising the role in the aptly titled "Never Say Never Again". The last time he played Bond before "Never Say Never Again" was in which film?

From Quiz Actors Who Revisited Roles They Played Long Ago

Answer: Diamonds Are Forever

This is the chronological order of James Bond films in which Sean Connery played 007: "Dr. No" (1962), "From Russia With Love" (1963), "Goldfinger" (1964), "Thunderball" (1965), "You Only Live Twice" (1967), "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971), and "Never Say Never Again" (1983). So we can see that it was 12 years between 1971 and 1983, from "Diamonds Are Forever" to "Never Say Never Again". There were however several other James Bond films released during that gap--the character just wasn't played by Connery. After "Diamonds..." Roger Moore took over the role and starred in 1973's "Live and Let Die", 1974's "The Man With The Golden Gun", 1977's "The Spy Who Loved Me", 1979's "Moonraker", 1981's "For Your Eyes Only", and then in 1983, alongside Connery's "Never Say Never Again", there was in that same year, Moore's "Octopussy".

11. Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambosio got her first major film role as Karen in what 2015 comedy?

From Quiz From Runway to Silver Screen

Answer: Daddy's Home

Ambrosio was Karen in "Daddy's Home" (2005). She reprised the role in the 2017 sequel. The film is a family comedy based on a rivalry between Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Ambrosio appears towards the end of "Daddy's Home" as Wahlberg's new wife, who along with being gorgeous is a doctor and novelist. Ironically, Wahlberg is intimidated by his new wife's ex-husband, played by wrestler John Cena. Alessandra Ambrosio is 5 foot, 9.5 inches, and was a model with Victoria Secret from 2004 to 2017. She made her first film appearance in the 2006 Bond film "Casino Royale" where she played a tennis girl who briefly flirts with Daniel Craig.

12. Keanu Reeves starred in a 2006 film adaptation of which 1977 novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick?

From Quiz Absolutely Not For Children

Answer: A Scanner Darkly

Written and directed by experimental filmmaker Richard Linklater, "A Scanner Darkly" is an animated science-fiction thriller. A dystopian United States has lost its war on drugs, and a powerful hallucinogen called Substance D has proliferated into a raging epidemic. In response, the government relies on intrusive surveillance technology and undercover agents. As one of these agents, Bob Arctor (Reeves) is called upon to infiltrate the criminal apparatus. The film's stylized visual effects are the product of interpolated rotoscoping, a technique whereby animators trace over live action footage frame by frame. Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder, and Rory Cochrane round out the cast. "Blade Runner" (1982) is based on Dick's 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". "Total Recall" (1990, 2012) is based on his 1966 short story "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale".

13. In the text epilogue of "Animal House", which character gets shot and killed by his own troops in Vietnam?

From Quiz Epilogues: What Happened to That Guy?

Answer: Doug Neidermeyer

"National Lampoon's Animal House" is a 1978 film by director John Landis. It tells the story of the Delta fraternity and their battles with both their rival frat, Omega house, and the stodgy dean of students. An ROTC cadet and member of Omega house, Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf) is portrayed as a bully (yelling at Flounder in the stable), a social weasel (never at a loss for kiss-up points), and always ready to fight. During the epilogue, it's revealed that Neidermeyer was killed by his own troops.

14. Which movie featured the song "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper?

From Quiz Iconic Movie Songs

Answer: A Star is Born

"Shallow" was the song that got Ally's (Lady Gaga) career going in "A Star is Born." Jack (Bradley Cooper) was helping Ally and encouraging her career until she became a bigger star. His alcoholism spiraled out of control, as did his career. The song won the Oscar in 2019 for Best Original Song.

15. Which Pixar animated film features a factory that reconfigures its original methodology in fulfilling its function of generating power?

From Quiz Movies That Provide Business Lessons

Answer: Monsters, Inc.

In Monstropolis, Sully and Mike (John Goodman and Billy Crystal) work at a factory that takes the energy from the screams of children and stores them in energy containers, which basically power the city. Sully and Mike work at the Monsters, Inc. factory as "scarers", monsters whose special talent is scaring children to elicit screams. When a cute little girl accidentally gets trapped in monster-word, Sully discovers that her laughter actually provides more energy than her screams. By the end, Sully has become CEO of Monsters, Inc, and instead of training monsters to scare children, the company and factory's new policy involves making children laugh as a way of solving their energy crisis.

16. Mark Hamill sported this beard, which wasn't the most epic beard we've seen in movies, but was pretty epic for his character, Luke. Which movie had Mark Hamill grow an epic beard for an epic role?

From Quiz Epic Movie Beards

Answer: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

In "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", Mark Hamill reprises his character of Luke Skywalker whom he has portrayed since "Star Wars: A New Hope". However, in the first trilogy of movies, Luke is young, dashing, and he is definitely clean-shaven. For "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (and a little bit at the end of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens") Hamill had to grow a beard. This made Luke seem wiser and more thoughtful, and, seeing as how Luke would create an epic ending to the movie, he needed an epic beard. The eighth installment in the "Star Wars" saga sees Rey seeking assistance in honing her powers by asking Luke Skywalker to be her mentor. Luke is initially hesitant because of his past experiences with Kylo Ren and Rey's deep connection with him. The enemy forces find the Resistance and attack them, but Luke manages to use subterfuge to buy time for the Resistance which allows them to escape to fight another day.

17. Which movie with Kiefer Sutherland was loosely based on "Little Red Riding Hood"?

From Quiz Zone of Movies

Answer: Freeway

The movie began with references to the children's story "Little Red Riding Hood". A teenage girl's mother and stepfather were arrested for possessing drugs, and other crimes. The girl was told that she would go to a foster home, but she wanted to go to her grandmother's house. She took off with a car, which broke down on the freeway. She was picked up by a man who turned out to be the I-5 Killer. When he attacked the girl, she shot him in the face. The girl was arrested for attempted murder because the I-5 Killer was a respected child counselor. After the man recovered, he found out where the girl's grandmother lived. Meanwhile, the girl escaped from juvenile prison and finally got to her grandmother's house, where the man (Kiefer Sutherland) was hiding under the covers.

18. In 1931, Austin Trevor was the first actor to portray Hercule Poirot in a movie. Which controversial novel was this film, "Alibi", based on?

From Quiz Portraying Poirot

Answer: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Austin Trevor portrayed Hercule Poirot in three movies - "Alibi" in 1931, "Black Coffee" (based on an Agatha Christie play rather than a novel), also in 1931, and "Lord Edgware Dies" in 1934. The novel "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" was controversial because of Christie's choice of murderer. The other answer options were all Miss Marple movies that were made in the 1960s, featuring Dame Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple.

19. He was perhaps the finest comedian of the late 20th Century, known for his manic improv skills. In portraying weird stalker Sy Parrish in "One Hour Photo" this Oscar winner kept to the script. Who was this dramatically talented funny man?

From Quiz Cast Against Type

Answer: Robin Williams

All four nominees are/were very funny fellows. Robin Williams is the only Oscar winner, for "Good Will Hunting" in 1999. Williams' depiction of the obsessed photo processor was so spot on, it was authentically uncomfortable to watch at times. Said fact probably explains the lack of awards for "One Hour Photo", but you cannot unsee Williams' portrayal.

20. In "A Few Good Men" (1992), what is the truth that attorney Daniel Kaffee is attempting to elicit from Colonel Nathan Jessup?

From Quiz You Can't Handle The Truth

Answer: That he gave an illegal order

"A Few Good Men" contains one of the all-time great courtroom confrontations. Jessup (Jack Nicholson): You want answers? Kaffee (Tom Cruise): I feel I'm entitled. Jessup: You want answers? Kaffee: I want the truth! Jessup delivers the immortal line "You can't handle truth" and then gives an epic monologue on the responsibilities of being a military commander. Kaffee finally gets Jessup to confess that he gave an illegal order, which resulted in the death of a Private under his command. As for the rest, Jessup while fanatical, seemed personally honest and unlikely to steal money, especially from the Marine Corps. Lt. Col Markinson committed suicide, and it was never said in the film whether Jessup was married or not. Given his obsession with his military career, it seems unlikely. Nicholson was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as Jessup but lost out to Gene Hackman for "Unforgiven" (1993).

21. Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy starred as a police detective and prisoner respectively in the film "48 Hours". Who directed the film?

From Quiz Yin to My Yang

Answer: Walter Hill

Nolte and Murphy also starred in a follow-up, called "Another 48 Hours". The "48 Hours" in the title referred to the two days leave from prison that Reggie Hammond (Murphy) had in order to work with Jack Cates (Nolte) and solve a murder. In a lengthy film career, Walter Hill has also directed "The Long Riders", "Southern Comfort" and "Brewster's Millions", amongst others.

22. Which English actress portrayed Queen Gorgo in Zack Snyder's 2007 film "300"?

From Quiz A Blaze of Glory

Answer: Lena Headey

"300" is an epic war film in the historical fantasy genre based on the comic series by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. King Leonidas leads 300 elite Spartans against 300,000 invading Persians at Thermopylae while his queen attempts to persuade the Spartan Council to send reinforcements to his aid. The impossibly outnumbered Spartans, using a narrow pass to their advantage, employ a military tactic known as "defeat in detail" (or "divide and conquer") to hold back the invaders and buy Sparta (and Greece) some time. Defeat in detail is a tactic used to engage a larger force by degrees rather than its entire strength. Headey's strong female character was credited with attracting a large number of women to the film. Danish actress Connie Nielsen and Israeli Gal Gadot portrayed Queen Hippolyta and Diana Prince, respectively in "Wonder Woman" (2017). German actress Diane Kruger played Helen of Troy in the 2004 film, "Troy". This question was eked out by Phoenix Rising member JCSon.

23. The camels are supporting players in this Disney cartoon classic from 1941. In what circus movie does one of three camels comically swallow a wad of something that was in his cheek, rather than spit it out during the parade into town?

From Quiz You in Back with the Camel

Answer: Dumbo

The parade in question takes place in the animated feature "Dumbo", about the young elephant with enormous ears who overcomes bullying and humiliation when he learns that he can fly. The camels are seen in the background in other scenes, with one memorable close-up of the camel who makes the decision not to spit. The other three choices are all live-action films, with only "Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus" also being a Disney production, starring Kevin Corcoran. "Circus World" starred John Wayne, and "Billy Rose's Jumbo" was a Doris Day movie.

24. Nick Nolte finds Eddie Murphy singing (well, trying to sing it, more like high-pitched vocalizing in a manner similar to singing) 'Roxanne' near the start of which movie from 1982?

From Quiz Music in Movies

Answer: 48 Hrs.

Eddie Murphy has actually had a couple of legitimate hits as a singer and has sung background with the group The Bus Boys, so his performance in "48 Hrs." (and the follow-up "Another 48 Hrs.") was intentionally off-putting and played for effect. To place this in context, Nolte's cop character (Jack Cates) goes to see Murphy's convict character (Reggie Hammond) to get his assistance in solving a big case. Cates is visiting Hammond in jail, with Hammond sitting back on the prison bunk with a set of headphones on while wailing out the song originally by the rock band The Police, "Roxanne". "48 Hrs." was successful enough to warrant "Another 48 Hrs." though it took eight years for that sequel to be made and released. That was most likely due to Murphy's own popularity at the time with his successful run of "Beverly Hills Cop" movies and the film "Coming to America".

25. What futuristic movie includes characters being hugely entertained by jingles from past advertising campaigns?

From Quiz A Future in Film (Futuristic Films)

Answer: Demolition Man

In the film "Demolition Man", police officer John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) is put into suspended animation (deep freeze!) to serve out a sentence imposed on him for a charge of (basically) police brutality. He is brought back to life in a future that seems to be utopian, but where unfortunately a past nemesis is causing problems. In that future some of the entertainment that is enjoyed by the citizenry comes back to listening to old advertising jingles. This somewhat shocks Spartan as he gets used to his new environment, though that shock is nothing compared to learning about the winner of the franchise wars. "Judge Dredd" was another futuristic film starring Stallone. It did not include jingles as a form of entertainment. "Mad Max" and "Freejack" are also futuristic films, but again, they don't include jingles as a form of entertainment.

26. "Memento" (2000) was a suspense film about a man with severe memory loss who is seeking the killer of his wife. What is one method he uses to trace/remember clues?

From Quiz Thanks for the Memories

Answer: Tattoos

This film was greatly honored by a number of international film associations and critics. It was nominated for two Academy Awards for Screenplay and Film Editing but won neither. It earned a 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating. It is highly regarded for its styling and editing. Personal: It is not on my bucket list to watch again as I found it unimpressive. Film critic Sean Burns summed it better than I can: "For all its formal wizardry, Memento is ultimately an ice-cold feat of intellectual gamesmanship. Once the visceral thrill of the puzzle structure begins to wear off, there's nothing left to hang onto."

27. Can you name one of the first movies that treated of alcoholism and recovery? It was made in 1945 and depicts Ray Milland's character's four day journey through drinking hell.

From Quiz I Need Help! Addiction in Movies.

Answer: The Lost Weekend

"The Lost Weekend" was a new way of looking at alcoholism, taking a very different slant on excessive drinking from the usual movie depiction of either funny or abusive behavior. Ray Milland's character goes on a drinking jag whenever he can, evading help from a drying out hospital, his brother and his girlfriend. He becomes so disturbed by his own lying and stealing that he tries to committ suicide, only held back by his girlfriend. "A Walk in the Sun" was also made in 1945, starred Dana Andrews and was a WWII film. Another class of '45 movie is a low-budget but well scripted film noir called "Detour". "Mildred Pierce" was the Joan Crawford come-back vehicle in 1945. A tear jerker about a mother who literally sacrifices everything to her cold, hard hearted daughter, the movie got Crawford an Oscar in 1946.

28. What was the first movie Kevin Smith directed? It introduced Jay and Silent Bob to the world.

From Quiz Cult Films: or Movies That Just Won't Go Away

Answer: Clerks

Dante Hicks works at a convience store in New Jersey. His friend Randall works at the video store right next door. The movie covers a day in their lives and colorful characters they have to deal with that come into their stores. There was a scene filmed that was supposed to come at the end of the movie where a man came in to rob the quick mart and shoots Dante, apparently to death. Smith removed the scene prior to release so the film would have a happier ending. It can be found in the extras part of some video versions. "You know, there's a million fine looking women in the world, dude. But they don't all bring you lasagna at work. Most of 'em just cheat on you."
