From Quiz Memorable Hitchcock Movie Moments: Reel 1
Answer:
Psycho
Released in 1960, 'Psycho' stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Vera Miles. As if the murder scene is not violent enough, the tension and horror are heightened by the shrieking violin accompaniment.
In the movie, Janet Leigh plays Marion Crane, a young office worker who runs away with $40,000 from her employer and drives across country to see her boyfriend. Tired from the drive, she stops off at the Bates Motel. She is greeted by Norman Bates (Perkins) who strikes her as being a nice young man, but little does she realise that his devotion to his mother is all-consuming. As she rests from her drive and takes a shower, an unidentified figure creeps into the bathroom and a sharp knife pierces the shower curtain, fatally wounding the young fugitive. More death follows as a Private Investigator (Martin Balsam) goes to the hotel seeking Marion. Eventually Marion's sister (played by Miles) goes to the hotel, and the true story of the Bates Hotel is revealed.
The 'shower scene' was placed at number 1 in a list of Hitchcock's most memorable movie scenes by film critics of 'The Times' in September 2008.
