Texas Trivia Questions

1. Located in Jefferson County, Texas, what city was settled by Dutch immigrants and boasts the Dutch Windmill Museum?

From Quiz
An International Tour of Texas

Answer: Nederland

Dutch Immigrants settled Nederland, Texas in 1897 on land sold by the Kansas City Southern railroad, and it was incorporated in 1940. Built in 1969, the Dutch Windmill Museum is a local history museum housed in an authentic replica of a Dutch windmill. The town was originally settled along Boston Avenue, where The Orange Hotel was built in 1897 to house oil and railroad workers.

2. Medina County is bordered by how many other counties?

From Quiz Medina County, Texas

Answer: 5

The counties are Bandera (north), Bexar (east), Atascosa (southeast), Frio (south), and Uvalde (west). Zavala County is to the southwest, but they just touch at the corner, similar to the four-corner states (Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah). Since a point is not a border (it has no length), areas that meet at a point are not considered bordering.

3. Under what Austin bridge would you find the largest urban bat population in North America?

From Quiz Welcome to Austin, Texas

Answer: Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge

According to Bat Conservation International, in 2015 there were 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats living under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. The bridge was originally completed in 1910. The bat colony was born in 1980 when bridge reconstruction created small gaps under the bridge which made an excellent bat habitat. In 2006, the bridge was renamed for former Texas governor Ann Richards who served in that capacity from 1991 to 1995. Hundreds of people watch the bats exit every evening from the bridge top, boats, and surrounding area. The bats eat up to 20,000 pounds of insects, including mosquitoes and other pests, every night. Central Texas is home to many bat colonies. In Round Rock, 15 miles to the north of Austin, another 750,000 bats can be found under an Interstate 35 bridge. Bracken Cave is 65 miles to the south and home to the world's largest bat colony hosting approximately 20,000,000 Mexican free-tailed bats. The Pennybacker Bridge on Capitol of Texas Highway and spanning Lake Austin is also a well know area landmark.

4. Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (DFW) sure is busy. In 2011, it was the fourth biggest in the USA and the sixth biggest in the world in terms of passenger movements. Why has DFW been so busy?

From Quiz An Australian in Texas

Answer: American Airlines have a hub at DFW

Most major American airlines work on a hub and spoke model where routes move to a central major city and then fly to multiple cities from the hub. Dallas/Fort Worth is the biggest hub of America airlines. About 85% of DFW traffic is due to American Airlines, which, after its proposed merger with US Airways will be the largest airline in the world. Southwest Airlines fly point to point rather than hub and spoke, and they fly to Love Field, the other Dallas airport. Dallas is a large city. The car is the preferred mode of transport. Houston's main airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport, was the tenth busiest for total passengers in North America in 2011.
