Glaciers Trivia Questions

1. The Athabasca Glacier, located in the Rocky Mountain region of Canada, is one of the six "toes" of which ice field?

From Quiz
Glaciers of North America

Answer: Columbia Ice Field

The Columbia Icefield is the largest to be found within the Rocky Mountains. The icefield has six glaciers or "toes". These glaciers are the Athabasca, Castleguard, Columbia, Dome, Stutfield, and Saskatchewan. The Athabasca Glacier itself is considered quite dangerous and is not recommended to travel on unless properly equipped or accompanied by guides. Ironically enough, due to its easy access, it is the most visited glacier in all of North America.

2. What are formed when a glacier reaches the sea and breaks up into chunks?

From Quiz Glaciers

Glacier Bay in Alaska is a good place for viewing this calving.

4. Which glacier term is correctly matched with its definition?

From Quiz Nothing Is Cooler Than a Glacier

Answer: Crevasse: An open fissure in a glacier's surface

All glacier explorers must be on constant alert for crevasses. Most dangerous are the ones that are covered with a thin layer of snow. A drumlin is a hill formed by debris pushed by a glacier. Firn is rounded, well-bonded snow that is older than one year. A serac is an isolated block of ice that is formed where the glacier surface is fractured. (definitions from http://nsidc.org/glaciers/glossary)

5. What is a crack in a glacier called?

From Quiz Glaciers

Answer: crevasse

These can be very dangerous for those crossing glaciers as they can be hidden by snow.

6. What color is most glacial ice, and why?

From Quiz Nothing Is Cooler Than a Glacier

Answer: Blue, because it is so dense it absorbs the rest of the light spectrum

There is a phenomenon called "red algae" that sometimes makes glaciers red, but most of them are a stunning, almost unearthly deep blue color. Retreating or melting glaciers may look dirty at times, a phenomenon discussed in this article: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=97550&page=1 (Famous chef Emeril Lagasse invented a drink called the "Blue Glacier Martini", but that's another quiz entirely...)
