1. Of London's big four clubs, which was the first to be founded?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur

In September 1882, a group of schoolboys, led by Bobby Buckle, all of whom were members of the Hotspur Cricket Club, decided to form a football section to play sport during the winter. Initially named the Hotspur Football Club, in April 1884, the club was renamed as Tottenham Hotspur, to avoid confusion with another Hotspur FC. Initially playing friendly games against other local sides, the club's first competitive game in October 1885 in the London Association Cup. In 1892, the club joined the short-lived Southern Alliance, a league for clubs in the south-east. This competition folded in 1893, but in 1895 Tottenham Hotspur turned professional, joining the Southern League in the summer of 1896. In 1900, the club win its first trophy, the Southern League title, while the following season saw it become the first club from outside the Football League since its formation in 1888 to win the FA Cup. Tottenham Hotspur was eventually elected into the Football League in 1908.

Everton originally played their matches at Anfield, but moved to Goodison Park in early 1892 after John Houlding, Anfield's owner, raised the rent. In March 1892, Houlding (who now had an empty stadium), created a new club, Liverpool FC, who took Anfield as their home ground. Two years later, the two clubs met for the first time at Goodison Park and Everton won, with goals from Tom McInnes, Alex Latta and Jack Bell. Liverpool were relegated that season, while Everton finished second behind Sunderland.

Clough had spent a short period as a coach for the Sunderland youth team, but his first opportunity as a manager came in October 1965 when Hartlepools United (renamed Hartlepool United in 1968) appointed him. Clough, aged 30, was the youngest coach in the Football League upon his appointment. He stayed with Hartlepools until 1967 when he was appointed as manager of Derby County. While Hartlepools spent most of the 1960s at the bottom of the fourth tier, Clough led the club to an eighth-place finish in 1966-67.

Robson was appointed Fulham manager in January 1968. His time with the club was not easy. The team only had 16 points from its first 24 games in Division One and was already headed for relegation. Robson could not stop the rot and the team was relegated at the end of the season. Robson left the Cottagers the following November.

East Stirlingshire gave Ferguson his first route into management in June 1974. The club was in serious difficulty when it appointed Ferguson, sitting in Scotland's second tier with no goalkeepers and no money. St Mirren convinced Ferguson to join them in October 1974 and by 1977 the club had moved from Scotland's Division Two to the top of Division One, with a team whose average was 19. Ferguson was sacked in 1978 as a result of falling out with the club's directors. Fergie never managed Ayr, but he did play for them in the last season of his playing career, scoring nine goals in 24 appearances. Ferguson spent the first three years of his playing career at Queen's Park, netting 15 times in 31 games.

Darwen FC, formed in 1870, played for two years in the top division of English football and six years in the Second Division. They finished last and did not seek re-election to The Football League. The club was liquidated 139 years later, in May 2009, and almost immediatley AFC Darwen was formed; and was admitted to the Western Lancashire League. Re-election used to apply in English football when the lowest teams in the bottom division had to garner sufficient votes from other league members to enable them to maintain their league position or be replaced as there was no automatic promotion into the bottom tier of English league football until 1987. Failure to be re-elected had a major financial impact on the clubs who were voted out.

Southampton Football Club was founded in 1885 as a church team and the nickname of 'The Saints' is related to their origins. The team played at The Dell until 2001 before moving to St. Mary's Stadium, which was named after their original club name and where they were formed, in 1885 (St. Mary's Young Men's Association F.C.) Although other clubs sing songs to the tune, the words are often changed, but Southampton sing the original version to tie in with their nickname. The other teams are also on England's south coast, with Brighton being known as 'The Seagulls', Portsmouth as 'Pompey' and Plymouth Argyle as 'The Pilgrims'.

Wild was manager for 15 seasons from 1932 to 1946. He had a second stint as Man City's manager from August to October 1947.

Sheffield United Football Club was formed on 22nd March 1889. They beat Derby County 4-1 on 15th April 1899, when they won their first FA Cup Final.

Third Lanark FC was formed in 1872 from the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, a part of the British armed forces. Subsequent to the club's demise in 1967, several board members were found guilty of contravening the Companies Act with the chairman being accused by the UK Board of Trade of blatant corruption.

The theme tune to "Z-Cars" was based on a song called "Johnny Todd", a traditional Liverpool folk song. According to Everton's fan site, www.toffeeweb.com, several of the cast members of "Z-Cars" came to a game and the theme tune of the show was played in their honour. The tradition stuck and survived an attempt to change it in the mid-1990s. The show itself was set in the Liverpool area, in the fictional district of "Newtown".

Sheffield Wednesday were initially a cricket team called The Wednesday Cricket Club, as they played their games on a Wednesday. The football team was formed on 4th September 1867, in an effort to train the cricketers during the winter off-season. They were known as The Wednesday Football club until they changed their name to Sheffield Wednesday in 1929. The team have won their first FA Cup in 1896. Tragedy struck the club on 15th April 1989 when Nottingham Forest were playing Liverpool at Hillsborough in the FA cup semi final; when 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death due to extreme overcrowding on the terraces.

Leeds City Football Club were formed in 1904, but due to alleged illegal payments to players during World War I, the club was disbanded by the Football League in 1919. Leeds United were then formed. The Right Honourable Earl of Harewood was appointed President of the club in 1961. He was also president of the Football Association between 1963 and 1972. Other famous fans of Leeds United include former tennic ace, Stefan Edburg and Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics.
