In September 1882, a group of schoolboys, led by Bobby Buckle, all of whom were members of the Hotspur Cricket Club, decided to form a football section to play sport during the winter. Initially named the Hotspur Football Club, in April 1884, the club was renamed as Tottenham Hotspur, to avoid confusion with another Hotspur FC. Initially playing friendly games against other local sides, the club's first competitive game in October 1885 in the London Association Cup. In 1892, the club joined the short-lived Southern Alliance, a league for clubs in the south-east. This competition folded in 1893, but in 1895 Tottenham Hotspur turned professional, joining the Southern League in the summer of 1896. In 1900, the club win its first trophy, the Southern League title, while the following season saw it become the first club from outside the Football League since its formation in 1888 to win the FA Cup. Tottenham Hotspur was eventually elected into the Football League in 1908.
