1 In Go Fish, players can ask each other if they have the cards that they want, with the aim of winning combinations of cards called "books". What makes a book in Go Fish?
Answer: Four of a kind

In Go Fish, each player gets seven cards if there are two or three players, otherwise they get five each if there are four or more players. The rest of the deck is put face down in the middle of the table. On your turn, you can ask any one of the other players if they have any cards of a certain value that you want. If they do, they then give you all the cards of that value, e.g., if you ask for Kings and they have two Kings, they give you both and you add them to your hand. If they have none, they say "go fish" or just "fish." Then you draw the top card from the deck. When you get four cards of the same kind, you make a book, which you put face up in front of you. Play continues until all the cards have been made into books. Whoever has the most books wins.

3 Skipping rope, or simply skipping, was a favourite activity. What word was used to describe the rope being turned faster and faster?
Answer: Pepper

Skipping, also known as jump rope, had many variations and cute rhymes that we chanted to help keep in rhythm. Usually two people were the rope turners, either with a single long rope, or with two turned in opposite directions for the more difficult game of Double Dutch. More than one person could jump at a time, depending on the game. If a rhyme included the words "red hot chili pepper" or simply "pepper", that was a signal for the turners to go faster, hoping to make the jumper miss a step and stop the rope.

8 In the United States, children play a game called "tag" in which a player called "it" must touch another player to make him or her become "it". What is this game called in some parts of the United Kingdom?
Answer: tig

The authors of the web site usvsth3m.com surveyed 986 British people who grew up during the 1970s-1980s, and then they created a map showing the distribution of different words for the popular playground game. The game is most often called "tig" by children in Scotland, the northern counties and midlands of England, Northern Ireland, and Cornwall and other parts of southwestern England. In other parts of England, the word "tag" is used; or it's "tiggy", "tick", "dobby", "tip", "tap", "tuggy" or "had he hit". In Wales they say "catch chase". The website lists other nations, as well, stating that "Australia likes 'chase' 'chasey' and 'tiggy'" and that "New Zealand splits between 'tig' and 'tag'" and "Ireland has several names, but Dublin goes with the wonderfully literal 'chasing'". According to the website, kids in the United States always use the word "tag"; but in the 1940s and 1950s in the American south, I remember calling it "chase". What do you call it?

11 Which game can children play, where they hide and the one who is "it" has to find them?
Answer: Hide and seek

Hide and Seek is a great game for a group of three or more children. The more children the better! One child is "It" and chooses a "home base" where they must run to and touch, in order to declare the other children as found. The "It" child must close their eyes and count to a hundred (or whichever number they decide on that could be less than a hundred). While "It" counts, the other children hide. They can hide on the side of a garage, or behind a bush, as long as the places are safe. Once "It" finishes counting, they must go and find the hiding children. When "It" finds one, the race is on to home base. If "It" reaches the spot first, "It" must say, "One, two, three on (Ann, for example)", then that child is out. If the child reaches the spot before "It" reaches home base then that child is safe. The first child out becomes the "It" child, once all the hiding children have been caught or have reached home base safely.

29 What is the object of the game in Old Maid?
Answer: Not to be left holding a special odd card

This game can be played with specially made cards or an ordinary deck of cards with one card removed, usually a queen. Two or more people can play. All the cards are dealt out until there are none left. Each player removes as many matching pairs of cards (but not three of a kind) from their hand as they can and places them face up. Then, the dealer offers their hand, spread out face down, to the player on the left, who draws one card. If the player can use the new card to make a pair, they remove the pair from their hand. The player then offers their own hand to the player on their left. Play continues like this, until there is only one card left. That is, if a queen was removed at the beginning of the game, then there will be one queen left over. The player holding that card, which is called the Old Maid, loses the game. The saying "old maid" used to refer to a woman who never married, which was considered an unhappy lot in life - although this might depend on what you think of marriage!

30 What is the minimum number of people that is needed for a game of hide and seek?
Answer: 2

One of the great things about hide and seek is that it only takes two people - a hider and a seeker - and has a very brief set up time. Once the basic rules are established as to the perimeters of the hiding places and how far the seeker needs to count with his eyes closed, all that is left to do is for the seeker to finish counting and shout, "Ready or not, here I come"!

The player who was It would then try to find the hidden players.
