Nazi Germany Trivia Questions

1. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was presumed dead in 1945, but conspiracy theories abound that he escaped to what continent, a popular spot for Nazis to escape to?

From Quiz
Where Have All The Nazis Gone?

Answer: South America

There are two main conspiracy theories about Hitler's death, one that he fled to Argentina, and one that he moved to Brazil. They flourish due to the fact that it was the Soviet Union that allegedly found his corpse, and the Soviet Union was known for being secretive. Also, Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele escaped to Argentina before dying off the coast of Brazil, which seems to make it less implausible that Hitler might have escaped too.

2. Rudolf Hess was born outside Germany in 1894. Where?

From Quiz Rudolf Hess

Answer: Alexandria, Egypt

Rudolf's Bavarian father was a prosperous merchant. The family lived an a villa in Alexandria and maintained a holiday home in Germany where Rudolf visited from the age of six.

3. The Night of the Long Knives was also known by what codename?

From Quiz Night of the Long Knives

Answer: Operation Hummingbird

After coming to power as chancellor, Hitler had to deal with a degree of political in-fighting within the Nazi party. At the end of June 1934, he ordered a series of arrests and political assassinations designed to consolidate his position and remove a number of prominent Nazis who represented a threat to his power. Operation Sea Lion was the code-name for the planed invasion of Britain, and Operation Barbarbossa was the code-name for the invasion of the Soviet Union. Blitzkrieg is a military term given to a concentration of force to break through a defensive line.

4. In which country was Adolf Hitler born?

From Quiz Young Adolf

Answer: Austria

Germany's most notorious leader wasn't even born a German! Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in Braunau am Inn, in Austria.

5. This Nazi, who from July 1941 was in charge of 'Jewish Affairs' and chaired the Wannsee Conference, was assassinated in Prague in 1942 by members of the Free Czechoslovak Army.

From Quiz Guess the Nazi !

Answer: Reinhard Heydrich

By 1942 Heydrich had amassed several offices in the Nazi regime, including those of deputy head of the SS, head of 'Jewish Affairs' and acting governor of Bohemia and Moravia. He was an SS-Obergruppenführer (roughly equivalent to lieutenant-general) at the time of his assassination. Two members of the Czech resistance escaped from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to the UK, where they were trained by British Special forces. They were later sent back to Bohemia to assassinate Heydrich. On the day of the assassination, one of the pair attempted to shoot him with a machine gun, but it jammed, and then the other threw a grenade, fatally wounding him. He was rushed to hospital, and then went into a coma, after several days he died of blood poisoning. The team was betrayed by a local member of the resistance. The Nazis were led to the Orthodox church in Prague, which was being used as a hiding place by the team. At the end of a spectacular shoot-out in the church the assassins committed suicide. The damage done by the betrayal was enormous, with the Nazis discovering several safe houses. Savage reprisals followed.

6. At which concentration camp did Mengele do most of his "medical research"?

From Quiz Angel of Death aka Josef Mengele

Answer: Auschwitz

It was at Auschwitz that Mengele became known as the "Angel of Death". It was here that he used inmates as test subjects in his "research" on heredity. He had a special interest in identical twins, dwarfs, giants, and anyone who displayed a genetic anomaly.

7. What was the title and name of Hitler's successor ?

From Quiz The Reign of Adolf Hitler

Answer: President Karl Dönitz

Hitler was the only ruler of Germany that called himself "Führer". Paul von Hindenburg was the president who appointed Hitler Chancellor on 30 January 1933. After WWI, Germany no longer had an emperor.

8. What was a Sonderkommando?

From Quiz Hitler & the Third Reich: XVIII - Misc. Part 4

Answer: A squad of Jews that had to do special tasks in the extermination camps.

The Sonderkommandos were small squads of Jews that were selected to do the dirty work within the extermination camps in return for better living conditions. Their duties included leading fellow Jews to the gas chambers, removing the bodies from the gas chambers, removing the valuables from the bodies and then disposing of the bodies into the crematoriums. Their lives however, were generally short, as they themselves would become victims of the killings. After about four months the Nazis would usually execute them because they didn't want any witnesses to the crimes being committed. A new group of male Jews would then be selected to fill the vacant positions. However, at Auschwitz some of the men in the Sonderkommando were kept on because of their expertise and survived till liberation. One of the best known Sonderkommando survivors is Filip Müller, whose memoirs appeared in 1979. The term Sonderkommando also referred (to a lesser extent) to special units of the SS that took part in political and policing roles within the occupied eastern countries. The mobile extermination units were called Einsatzgruppen.

9. What event took place on 10 May, 1933 that involved students and Nazi Stormtroopers?

From Quiz Hitler & the Third Reich: XVII - Misc. Part 3

Answer: Public book burnings.

On the evening of 10 May, 1933 masses of students took part in a massive book burning campaign. Over 25,000 books deemed "un-German" were thrown into bonfires Some of the authors targeted included: Karl Marx, Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Sigmund Freud, Leon Trotsky, H.G. Wells and Jack London. The main book burnings took place in Berlin, but there were parallel burnings in all the German university cities, with students and professors playing a key role!

10. Why did Pastor Niemoeller initally support Hitler and the Nazi Party?

From Quiz Germans Who Opposed Hitler

Answer: he hated the atheism that the Communist taught

In World War I Martin Niemoeller commanded a U-boat and in the Weimar years Pastor Niemoeller (as he had become) was a nationalist. Initially he supported Hitler and the Nazi Party because he feared Communism. When Hitler promised in 1932 not to interfere in church affairs, Niemoeller fully endorsed him. However, by the autumn of 1933, the Nazi regime was actively trying to manipulate the churches. From Quiz Hitler & the Third Reich: XIV - A to Z (Part 3)

Answer: Gestapo Headquarters (Denmark).

The 'Shell House' was a modern building that the Gestapo took over in 1944 as their Danish HQ. The building was seized from the Shell Oil Company. On the 21st of March, 1945 a squadron of eighteen Mosquito bombers attacked the building and completely destroyed it, along with the files about the local resistance networks that were being held inside. The actual bombing raid was a huge success, however it was marred by the accidental bombing of a school that resulted in the death of children and nuns. Despite this, after the war the aviators were welcomed as heroes by the Danish population.

12. J - I was born in New York, and went to Germany prior to the outbreak of WWII. I was a radio broadcaster that sent out propaganda messages. After the war I was convicted of treason and hanged.

From Quiz Hitler & the Third Reich: XIII - A to Z (Part 2)

Answer: William Joyce.

William Joyce - who should never be confused with the author James Joyce - moved to the United Kingdom at an early age, masqueraded as British, obtained a British passport on false pretences, and became an ardent Nazi. On 26 August 1939 he moved to Germany, where he made propaganda broadcasts. He was nicknamed "Lord Haw-Haw". William Joyce was arrested after the war. The charge of high treason presented complex legal issues as he was not in fact British, and ultimately the case went to the House of Lords. As he had travelled on a British passport, with a presumed claim to British protection, he owed loyalty to the British Crown and was subject to English law on treason. As one of the judges said, "He travelled to Germany wrapped up in the Union Jack". He was hanged in 1946. Otto John was a member of a resistance group opposed to the Nazis. Heinz Jost was the leader of the Einsatzgruppen in the east. Robert Jackson was the chief American prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials.

14. Hitler's Religion: Although rumors have suggested that some part of Adolf Hitler's ancestry was Jewish, what was Hitler's religion?

From Quiz Adolf Hitler - What Made Him Tick?

Answer: Catholic

Hitler was born to Roman Catholic parents, was baptized a Catholic, served as an altar boy, and was confirmed in 1904. He remained a Roman Catholic (although nonpractising) throughout his life. Hitler's rumored Jewish ancestry is based on speculation (or propaganda) that Hitler's paternal grandfather was Jewish. Hitler's father, Alois, was an illegitimate child not registered with the name of a father. Some claim that Alois's mother (Maria Anna Schicklgruber, Hitler's paternal grandmother) worked in the home of a Jewish family in Graz, Austria, and that a son (Leopold Frankenberger) there got Maria pregnant. Given that Jews were banned from Graz throughout Maria's alleged employment there and the fact that no Frankenberger family is listed in any Graz directory in the relevant period, this story is highly implausible and is dismissed by historians today.

16. What law was issued by Hitler on 1 December 1936?

From Quiz Hitler & the Third Reich: IV

Answer: The Hitler Youth Law.

The law was updated in 1939 and again in 1941. Youths between the ages of 10 and 18 years were eligible to join the Hitler Youth. The Enabling Act marked the beginning of Hitler's hold over Germany. The law basically gave Hitler dictatorship powers. The Nuremberg Laws were passed 'by acclamation' on September 15, 1935. The laws targeted the Jews and gave a definition of what a Jewish person was. The laws included some of the following provisions: It was illegal for any Jew to marry non-Jew. Jews were only allowed to marry other Jews who were Jewish to the same 'degree'. So a 'full Jew' was not allowed to marry a 'half Jew', for example. Jews were not allowed to have sexual relations with non-Jews. Jews were not allowed to fly the Reich flag. Jews were stripped of most features of German citizenship (but until 1941 could still obtain German passports if they wanted to emigrate). The Nazi Weapons Act of 18 March 1938 was updated the day after Kristallnacht (or the "Night of Broken Glass"). Kristallnacht took place on 9-10 November 1938. Jews were not allowed to possess firearms or ammunition under these new laws.

Military restrictions prevented Germany from having an airforce and possessing tanks. The army and navy were limited in size. The Rhineland was designated a demilitarised zone, no German troops or weapons were permitted in the area. Germany also lost land and France, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Denmark all gained land as a result of the treaty conditions. In addition, Germany was prevented from uniting with Austria. After becoming chancellor Hitler put the wheels in motion to increase the size of his armed forces. At that stage, this was secret so that it did not look as if Germany was breaching the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles.

30. Why did Hitler choose Karl Doenitz as his successor?

From Quiz The End of the Reich

Answer: He felt betrayed by the German Army and the Luftwaffe

During one of Hitler's final conferences with his staff, he learned that an attack he had ordered through SS Obergruppenführer Felix Steiner to repulse the Russian onslaught had never even mobilized. At this, Hitler dismissed everyone from the room except for Generals Keitel, Jodl, Krebs, and Burgdorf. He then flew into a rage, saying that the army had betrayed and fought against his orders from the very beginning. For the first time, he admitted that all was lost. Later that evening, Hermann Goering sent a telegram reminding Hitler of his Order of Succession that made him next in line as leader of the Reich should something happen to him. He said that if he didn't hear back from Hitler by 10:00 PM that evening, he would consider him "incapacitated", and assume command. Martin Bormann got his hands on the telegram first, and made it sound as though Goering was giving Hitler an ultimatum, and trying to stage a coup. Hitler ordered that Goering be stripped of all offices and expelled from the party. The Luftwaffe was now out of the picture. The final straw for the SS came when, a few days later, Hitler received news of Himmler's secret negotiations with the Western powers. Heartbroken at the betrayal of "Loyal Himmler", he also ordered his expulsion from the party. The German Navy was the only branch of the armed forces not proven treacherous, even though they had ceased to be any kind of decisive force long ago, so Grand Admiral Doenitz was named as Hitler's successor. Later, Doenitz blamed Speer for his sudden rise, saying "This is all your fault" while they were imprisoned in Spandau after the Nuremberg trials.
