In-N-Out Burger Trivia Questions

1. What color are the palm trees on In-N-Out milkshake cups?

From Quiz
In-N-Out Burger 4

Answer: green

In-N-Out cups are encircled by generic coconut palms, which symbolizes the company's southern California roots. The palms on soda cups are colored red. The now obsolete water cup was colored blue.

2. What variety of potatoes does In-N-Out use in preparing french fries?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 2

Answer: Kennebec

INO fries are peeled and diced daily from fresh Kennebec variety potatoes. Kennebecs have a smooth white skin, shallow eyes, and are known as one of the finest baking potatoes. They yield with the best of them, reaching maturity midseason (approx. 80 days).

3. In what year was the first In-N-Out burger founded?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger

Answer: 1948

The first INO was founded in Baldwin Park by Harry and Esther Snyder.

4. In what year did the iconic In-N-Out boomerang arrow make its first appearance?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 5

Answer: 1954

The arrow, which climbs to the upper left then boomerangs down and right, replaced the original "No Delay" sign in 1954. According to In-N-Out, associates adopted the sayings, "The arrow points to pride" and "We all work under the same arrow". Befitting its perch on the famous Route 66, store #26 in San Bernardino, California features retro In-N-Out signage starring the "No Delay" slogan of yore. Executed by CNP Signs & Graphics, the design elements are at once nostalgic and recognizably In-N-Out. As dreadful as it sounds, In-N-Out was not around in 1946; and the arrow was certainly in use long before the end of the twentieth century.

5. Where did In-N-Out Burger corporate headquarters relocate to in 1994?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 4

Answer: Irvine, California

The company headquarters were previously located in Baldwin Park, where the first In-N-Out store opened in 1948. In 1994, company president Rich Snyder moved headquarters and the In-N-Out university (training center) to Irvine, presumably because the new location would be closer to his home in Newport Beach, and because several other fast food chains had corporate headquarters located in Irvine.

6. Many In-N-Out locations have crossing palm trees in front. Which movie was the inspiration behind this practice?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 3

Answer: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Stanley Kramer's "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", a film about a search for hidden treasure, was In-N-Out founder Harry Snyder's favorite movie. As it turns out, the treasure was buried beneath "the big W" made by four palms. The two middle trees crossed to form an 'X'. The crossed palms also fit the traditional In-N-Out palm tree motif, which is a reflection of the company's roots in Southern California.

7. Complete the slogan: "At In-N-Out freshness isn't just a claim, it's a ____ ___ ______".

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 2

Answer: Way of Life

Produce is delivered to each location every other day. Lettuce is hand-leafed, meat selected and ground by INO butchers, buns baked fresh, and shakes made from real ice-cream. INO does not use freezers, heat lamps, or microwaves at any of its locations.

8. What Biblical Scripture reference could be found on the blue 14oz. In-N-Out water cups?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 2

Answer: John 14:6

Tiny Biblical notations are placed in out-of-the-way spots (the undersides of cups and near the seams of the paper burger pouches). The verses have been printed in this way since at least 1987. According to a New York Times article, an In-N-Out spokesman said the citations are printed in memory of Rich Snyder (CEO 1976 - 1993), a son of the founders, whose initiative led to their first being used. He died in a private plane crash in 1993 in Orange County at the age of 41 along with several other company board members. The following Scripture references are found on INO material sans text: REVELATION 3:20 (burger and cheeseburger wrappers): Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. JOHN 3:16 (soda cups): For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. PROVERBS 3:5 (milkshake cups): Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. NAHUM 1:7 (Double-Double wrapper): The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. JOHN 14:6 (water cups): Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Incidentally, INO no longer offers the blue 140z. water cups.

9. In 1993, there were 93 In-N-Out locations. In-N-Out continued to expand, and in 1999 there were 140* locations throughout California, and two other states. Who was Chairman of the Board during this period of expansion?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger

Answer: H. Guy Snyder

Harry Snyder held the presidency from 1948 until his death in 1976. His sons Rich and Guy would run the company for the next 23 years. Rich took over the presidency in 1976 until his death in 1993. Guy would then head INO as Chairman of the Board and CEO until his death in 1999, at which point Esther Snyder (Harry's wife) assumed control. *Store number 141 opened in Mill Valley, CA on December 16, 1999 under the chairmanship of Esther Snyder.

11. Who became the company's fifth president?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 3

Answer: Mark Taylor

Harry and Esther Snyder founded In-N-Out in 1948. Harry died in 1976, at which point his eldest son Rich Snyder took over. Rich died in a plane crash in 1993, and the mantle passed to his brother Guy. Guy fathered one daughter, Lynsi, who was to be Harry and Esther's only grandchild. Guy died of a Vicodin overdose in 1999. Esther thus became the fourth president. Mark Taylor served as the Vice President of Operations until the death of Esther Snyder on August 4, 2006, when he assumed the presidency. He is married to Lynsi's half sister.

12. What is another name for the In-N-Out "Secret Menu" veggie burger (bun, lettuce, tomato, special sauce, w or w/o onions)?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 2

Answer: Wish Burger

"Secret Menu" items are those not included on the regular INO menu. These are popular made-to-order items that any INO location will recognize. 'On the Sal' is just lettuce and dressing. Nothing else. 'Flying Dutchman' is two beef patties, and two slices of cheese. Nothing else. 'Garden Style' is not an INO (secret or otherwise) menu item. NOTE: by name I refer to a verbal order which INO associates could translate into the corresponding techincal terms.

13. What are the words to the popular In-N-Out jingle?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 5

Answer: In-N-Out, In-N-Out, that's what a hamburger's all about.

14. Who are the In-N-Out Burger "all-stars"?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 4

Answer: a team of experienced associates from other stores who go in to open a new store

In-N-Out Burgers 'all-stars' assist in the opening operations of new restaurants. According to In-N-Out vice president of planning and development, Carl Van Fleet, "The all-stars are highly skilled in all areas of our stores so we can ensure smooth operations even when extremely busy. It's important to us because we want to give our customers a great experience on their first visit to a new In-N-Out, especially in a new market. We also know that it is the first time at any In-N-Out for many of those customers and that makes it even more important."

15. Which item includes a reference to the following text: "The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust him"?

19. A reference to what Biblical adage is discreetly printed on In-N-Out fry boats?

From Quiz In-N-Out Burger 5

Answer: Proverbs 24:16

In-N-Out has quietly printed Biblical citations (just the references, not the actual text) on some of their paper containers and other items since at least 1987. Proverbs 24:16 reads, "For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity". "Adage" is synonymous with "proverb", so hopefully that little clue got you pointed in the right direction. John 11:35 reads simply, "Jesus wept". Many will recognize it as the shortest verse in the Bible, but it does not show up on any In-N-Out packaging. Revelation is the last book of the Bible, but there is no chapter 23. Snyder is the surname of the company founders, Harry and Esther, who established the first In-N-Out burger in 1948.

The celebrations had to be bigger than ever because everything is bigger in Texas, right? The move was made possible by the construction of a brand new In-N-Out warehouse and patty-making facility in Dallas. The company maintains its emphasis on quality and freshness in part by ensuring that all stores are no more than a day's drive from one of its warehouses. Its first foray outside of California was into Nevada in 1992. In-N-Out continued to beef up operations and expanded into Arizona in 2000 and Utah in 2008.
