According to legend, God breathed life into the universe and, in doing so, created the light that gave birth to angels, the Earth that gave birth to man, and the fire that birthed the Djinn, a type of creature condemned to dwell within the void between worlds. If awoken, the Djinn has the power to grant three wishes to the person awakening him, and when the third is granted, they will inadvertently free all Djinn from the void and they, of course, will have the power to reign over the realm of man.

On a dock in Los Angekes, wealthy collector Richard Beaumont watches as a crate containing his ancient statue of the god Ahura Mazda is offloaded from a cargo ship. The statue is surprisingly rare since such a God was outlawed in the Middle East for a time. This makes it wonderfully ironic when a drunk dockworker accidentally drops the box off the ship, crushing a man and destroying the piece of art. One of the dockworkers, clearing the debris, spots the fire opal carefully hidden inside the stonework and puts it in his pocket to bring to a pawn shop. The pawn shop owner, believing it to be valuable, brings it to an auctioneer. And that's where things get real interesting.

This is a great scene and a wonderful piece of acting on Andrew Divoff's part. They are walking around the room, and confronting each other. A clip is shown of Wendy with her face without skin, which is is the reality for Alex who now seems to begin to understand the Djinn's true evil...beautiful!

A thermal imaging laser causes the fire opal to split open, damaging Josh's equipment and severely injuring him. The Djinn, as it would seem, has escaped his prison. The Djinn asks Josh if he wishes for his pain to go away and of course, Josh says yes. The wish is granted, killing Josh to end his pain, and the Djinn regains a little bit of his power. Alex is somehow able to sense the events from elsewhere across town and she rushes to the lab to find out that Josh was killed. The opal is missing. The Djinn ends up regaining even more power granting a wish to a homeless man, killing a pharmacist when the man wishes him dead. Of course, it comes at the cost of the homeless man's soul. Once again, Alex experiences it all in her mind.

Alex spends the next little while hunting down the origin of the fire opal and it takes her to the dock where Mr. Beaumont was collecting his statue. The hunt inevitably takes her right to Beaumont's house where, after touring his room of rare God statues, she's told that Ahura Mazda was the sole God of the Zoroastrian faith. He furthers her along to a folklore professor named Wendy who might have a bit more insight. The Djinn arrives at the School of Medicine and, while trying to remove the flesh from a cadaver to use as a disguise, he grants another wish for a student to unsee what he's doing (by sensibly removing his eyesight). Alex, once again, has a vision of the Djinn's actions and ends up screaming on Beaumont's floor. He takes that opportunity to invite her and her sister, Shannon, to a party, because that's the time to do it.

Alex speaks to Professor Wendy about the fire opal and she seems to have all the folklore about Djinns and the specific instance that seems to be making itself more and more clear with the magical item. The Djinn were created after the angels, but before mankind. They are pure evil, and their goal is to usurp the world and take it for themselves. The stories we hear about them sweeten the idea behind their terrifying motives. Across town, the Djinn buys a fancy suit and tries out his new name and identity, granting a local salesperson the wish to remain beautiful forever (by turning her into a mannequin, because that makes sense) by tricking her into believing her beauty will fade. It's a real guilt trip, and kind of a sleazy trick.

The Djinn visits the police to speak to the detective responsible for overseeing Josh's case because he needs to get to Alex and use her wishes to bring himself back to full power. The Detective, though, seems to be concerned with a completely different case. The Djinn distracts him by granting a particularly violent wish in order to steal Alex's business card. He ends up heading to the auction house and hassling the guard there (leading to another poor choice of words and a violent death involving phasing through a human being) to speak to Alex's boss, Nick. A couple of wishes later, and Alex's boss is the recipient of a million dollars. Oh yeah, because his mother dies in a violent plane crash.
