The Buffalo Sabres joined the National Hockey League in 1970. In only their third season, the Sabres found their first playoffs, but lost in the quarterfinals. In the 1974-75 season, they made it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals, but lost to the Philadelphia Flyers.
