Answer: It involved the first ever "ride off" in Professional Rodeo
At the end of the 10th round of the National Finals Rodeo, Don Gay and Randy Majors were tied in points for the title and they each had to get on 1 more bull to determine the winner. With some encouragement from his mentor Jim Shoulders, Donnie held on to #11 of Dell Hall Rodeo Co. just long enough to make the 8 second whistle and win his 4th World title.

At times this bronc seemed almost impossible to ride, often bucking off riders in only 2 or 3 jumps. In 2000, the big black mare threw world champion Dan Mortensen head first into the dirt at the National Finals so hard, it seemed he would not be able to get up. 3 years later, Mortensen rode Painted Smile to a 92 point score and the 2003 World Title. During the 2004 season, Painted Smile became somewhat a problem to get out of the bucking chute, and Kesler moved her over to the bareback riding event where she remained.

Red Rock was voted bucking bull of the year in 1987. He was unridden in 309 attempts until '87 PRCA World Champion Lane Frost rode him in a special match riding in 1988 at Redding California. Cowboys loved getting on Red Rock because he would not step on them or hook them with his horns. Owner John Growney said he was so gentle that, "At the ranch we put kids on his back. He's a friend. A good soul." A phenomanal bucking trait he had was that if a cowboy rode right handed, Red Rock would go left, if the rider was left handed, the bull would turn back to the right.
