Answer: Pennywise
IT is actually an ancient evil that has chosen to plague the town of Derry. Mike Hanlon shows his friends a book that has images of the same clown dating back centuries. It surfaces every 30 years to feed. As it seems to prefer to feed on children, it adopts the form of a clown to lure them. In one scene, IT calls itself, "The eater of worlds, and of children!" Pennywise is played by the extremely versatile actor Tim Curry.

Mike Hanlon (Marlon Taylor) is new in town and as it was the 60's, the fact that he is 'coloured' makes him more of an outcast. He meets the other six when he is being chased by the resident bully, Henry Bowers (Jarred Blancard), and his gang. The boat is eventually sucked into the drain on the kerb and as Georgie looks for it, Pennywise appears in the grate. Cautious at first, the little boy almost leaves but then the clown utters the immortal words, "You wanna balloon?" As Georgie reaches for it we see Pennywise reach for him as his teeth turn razor sharp. We later learn that Georgie's arm was ripped off. As an adult, Mike Hanlon finds a picture of Georgie at the scene of another child's brutal murder, the same picture that winked at Bill just after Georgie's death, then seemed to bleed. This is what prompts him to call the others.
