Pokemon Red/ Blue/Yellow Trivia Questions

1. In what city is the Safari Zone located?

From Quiz
"Pokemon Red and Blue" Safari Zone

Answer: Fuchsia City

The Safari Zone is located at the most northern point of Fuchsia. There's a zoo south of it you can look at first.

2. To slip into this building unnoticed would be quite difficult...unless you were one of the Ghost-type Pokemon frequenting the area. In what Lavender Town landmark would you be able to fight Channellers and catch Gastly?

From Quiz I Spy...Kanto

Answer: Pokemon Tower

Appearing in several generations of the game, Pokemon Tower is Lavender Town's claim to fame in "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow" because the town lacks a proper gym. Instead, you can head up the different levels of this multi-story Pokemon cemetery to fight your way to the top and capture ghost-types Gastly and Haunter. Near the bottom you'll face off against your rival; near the top you'll fight Team Rocket. The building became Kanto's Radio Tower in later generations.

3. The most common sprite of MISSINGNO. is a combination of glitched tiles shaped in a way that makes MISSINGNO. resemble which letter, but backwards?

From Quiz MISSINGNO. in "Pokemon Red/Blue"

Answer: L

MISSINGNO. is shaped like a backwards L. The reason is that MISSINGNO. has an invalid value for its fontsprite size (8x8 tiles, while only 5x5, 6x6, 7x7 are valid). This randomly causes it to have the shape it has.

4. Low-level Pokemon can usually only learn moves that won't do much damage -- Bulbasaur and Squirtle are proof. What low-damaging move do both come with when you receive either one of them at the start of the game?

From Quiz Physical Attacks in "Red/Blue/Yellow"

Answer: Tackle

Tackle is one of the weakest attack moves, which gets overtaken later on in the game by stronger ones -- Stomp, for example. Most low-level wild Pokemon such as Rattata and Pidgey also have moves that don't do a lot of damage.

5. In this game, instead of choosing between Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, you are given a Pikachu. What Pokemon does your rival start with?

From Quiz 'Pokemon Yellow' - What Changed and Stayed

Answer: Eevee

This Eevee was originally meant for you. Your rival got a bit hasty and decided he wanted that Pokemon, landing you with Pikachu.

6. The first Gym Leader in Kanto is Brock of the Rock type Pokemon. He has a Geodude and an Onix. In "Red/Green/Blue", they were at levels 12 and 14. What has happened to the Pokemons' levels in "Yellow"?

From Quiz 'Pokemon Yellow': Gym Leaders and their Pokemon

Answer: Both have decreased by 2

Brock's Geodude is at level 10 in "Pokemon Yellow" and his Onix is at level 12. If you only have Pikachu at this stage of the game, this battle will be tough so it is advised to catch a Mankey or a Caterpie (and evolve it into a Butterfree).

7. Where are we if we're buying a Max Potion?

From Quiz Where in Kanto Are We? 3

Answer: Indigo Plateau

Indigo Plateau is the only location where this item can be bought, and it's great for the final battles of the game. The Max Potion costs $2,500 each, but that's not as costly as the $3,000 Full Restore. Indigo Plateau only contains a Pokécenter, Pokémart, and five trainers. These trainers are the Elite Four and your rival. If we beat all of these, we've beaten the game.

8. Where are we if we're picking up Voltorbs?

From Quiz Where in Kanto Are We? 2

Answer: Power Plant

The Power Plant is located on the southern point of Route 9, and if we use the Surf technique, we can make our way down to it. Inside the building, there are rare TMs and items we can collect, but many of the items on the ground will actually be Voltorbs disguised as items. If we pick one of these up, we'll be forced into a battle. At the exit to the Power Plant, we can fight and possibly capture the legendary Zapdos.

9. Where are we if we're fighting Channelers?

From Quiz Where in Kanto Are We?

Answer: Pokémon Tower

The Pokémon Tower is the large building in the east end of Lavender Town. This building is haunted by ghost Pokémon such as Gastly and Haunter, which can't be defeated with physical attacks. Not only can ghost Pokémon be found here though; Cubone is also found in all three versions of the game. If we're playing "Pokémon Yellow", we can also find Jessie and James on the seventh floor of the building. After fighting some Channelers and members of Team Rocket, we need to fight a Marowak and save Mr. Fuji.

10. How many coins can you get from the Game Corner in Celadon City with $1,000?

From Quiz General "Red, Blue, and Yellow" Facts

Answer: Fifty

If you want a good time, you can head to the Game Corner in Celadon City for a bit of gambling on the slot machines. In order to play though, you need to obtain a Coin Case from a restaurant in Celadon City. With the Coin Case, you can buy and hold coins that you receive from other players and that you buy from the cashiers. These coins can be traded for prizes next door to the Game Corner.

11. Which route is blocked until we defeat Brock in Pewter City?

From Quiz Reading Your Kanto Route Map

Answer: Route 3

Route 3 goes from the east end of Pewter City and it heads all the way to the entrance of Mt. Moon. Until we defeat Brock, there is no way of heading in this direction. On the route, we can battle a bunch of trainers and catch many Pokémon from Pidgey to Jigglypuff. In "Pokémon Yellow", we can even catch Mankey and Sandshrew on this route. Spearow is also common in all three games. This route is one of the few to include a Pokécenter; it's left of the entrance to Mt. Moon.

12. In "Pokémon Red and Blue", you can choose between three starter Pokémon. Which is the only one that starts with or learns the technique 'Leer'?

From Quiz Odd Pokémon in "Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow"

Answer: Charmander

In "Pokémon Red and Blue", one can choose between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Each of these have completely different strengths and weaknesses, so you'll need to determine which would best suit you for your journey. You can pick your first Pokémon in the beginning of the game at Professor Oak's lab in Pallet Town. In "Pokémon Yellow", you don't start with any of these Pokémon. Instead, you have no choice but to use Pikachu throughout the whole game. You will be able to find the other three Pokémon in certain towns through the game though. Leer is learned by Charmander at level 15 and it will lower a Pokémon's defence when used.

13. What is the name of the person who gives you your starting Pokémon?

From Quiz "Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow" - Important People

Answer: Professor Oak

Professor Oak's lab is basically next to your house in Pallet Town. In "Pokémon Blue or Red", he'll let you choose between Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander, but in "Pokémon Yellow", he'll simply give you Pikachu. When you retrieve a package for him in Viridian City, you'll also be given the Pokédex in order to record data about Pokémon from all over the Kanto region of the game.

14. What item will get you out of Mt. Moon, Game Corner, or Pokémon Tower and return you to the most recently visited Pokécenter?

From Quiz Shopping in "Pokémon Red, Blue, or Yellow"

Answer: Escape Rope

Escape Ropes will always cost $550 at Pokémarts, but it's quite easy to find one in a location such as a cave or a building. In fact, the item will be best used in one of these locations. If it's used, it will take you directly to the last Pokécenter that you healed your Pokémon at. The only other thing in the game that will send you to a location automatically is HM02 (Fly) which can be learned by flying Pokémon. This move will send you straight to any town that you choose.

15. What TM will Brock give you after his gym battle?

From Quiz "Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow" - Major Battles

Answer: Bide

You can find Brock in the gym in Pewter City. He is the first gym leader of the game and although he only has two Pokémon, you'll probably need to level up a bit before the battle. His Geodude and Onix will both use ground/rock-based attacks, but these are often no match for a Butterfree's Confusion attack or a Squirtle's Bubble attack. After defeating Brock, you'll receive the Boulder Badge and TM 34 (Bide). You'll also be able to advance towards Mount Moon after Route 3 which was previously blocked off. After the battle, you'll also be able to learn the Flash HM.

16. Which gym leader uses an Onix in all three games?

From Quiz Spelling It Out - "Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow"

Answer: Brock

Brock is the first gym leader in the game and he specializes in rock/ground-type Pokémon. In "Pokémon Red and Blue", you're able to choose between three starter Pokémon; two of which are super effective against Brock. In "Pokémon Yellow" on the other hand, you start with Pikachu, and his lightning-attacks don't affect these Pokémon at all. After the battle, you'll be given the Boulderbadge and TM 28 which contains Bide.

17. To begin, you can choose from three starting Pokémon in "Pokémon Red and Blue". How many different starting Pokémon are there in "Pokémon Yellow"?

From Quiz "Pokémon Red/Blue" vs. "Pokémon Yellow"

Answer: One

In "Pokémon Red and Blue", you can choose between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle as your starting Pokémon, but in "Pokémon Yellow", you'll only be able to have Pikachu as your starting Pokémon. Although Pikachu won't like you at first, he'll grow to be your friend. Another odd thing about this Pikachu is that he'll follow you throughout the game rather than stay in a Pokéball. This means that you can only have five other Pokémon out at all time. You will be able to get any of the three starting Pokémon from "Pokémon Red and Blue" in "Pokémon Yellow" by asking people about them in certain cities.

18. Where can the legendary bird, Zapdos, be found?

From Quiz "Red and Blue" Chronicles 5

Answer: Power Plant

The Power Plant isn't functioning. The rundown plant is swarming with all kinds of Electric-type Pokémon, including Zapdos. The Power Plant is laid out in a relative path with a few antechambers like a maze. At the very end is an alternative exit and the big beast. You're going to want a Ground-type Pokémon for the Power Plant, because those Pokémon without immunities to Electric-type attacks will be ripped apart before you get to the bird unless you have plenty of healing agents. The only problem with Ground-type Pokémon and attacks is that Zapdos is part Flying, so Ground-type attacks won't affect it.

19. What is Route 17 (between Celadon City and Fuchsia City) also known as?

From Quiz "Red and Blue" Chronicles 4

Answer: Cycling Road

20. When you reach Bill's, he's having a little trouble. What's wrong?

From Quiz "Red and Blue" Chronicles 2

Answer: He switched bodies with a Pokémon

Bill is a scientist, and invented the PC system for transporting and storing Pokémon. He conducted an experiment in which he ended up in the body of a Pokémon, and was unable to reverse the process in his new form. He asked you for help to get him back to normal, and in return gave you a ticket for the S.S. Anne. In the anime series, Bill was only trapped inside a Pokémon suit.

21. When do you first meet Prof. Oak? (Not in the introduction)

From Quiz "Red and Blue" Chronicles 1

Answer: As you leave town

You can look everywhere in the Pallet Town, but you wont find him anywhere. As you try to leave town, he'll explain that you can't go out without protection. He'll then escort you back to his lab where you'll get your first Pokémon.

22. Starting your game, Professor Oak is nowhere to be found. How do you make him appear?

From Quiz "Pokemon Blue" for the Ultimate Pokemon Fan!

The entrance fee will give the player 30 Safari Balls. Needless to say, they have the worst catch rate in the game.

25. What is Pokémon trainer Red's second default name?

From Quiz "Pokémon Red" Part 1

"Pokémon" main characters have two names-- one for the anime, and one for the game. Ash is a young boy from Pallet Town who is on a quest to become a Pokémon master.

26. Swift is a Normal-type move that has a big advantage over a lot of the other moves. What is that advantage?

From Quiz Physical Attacks in "Red/Blue/Yellow"

Swift will always hit, even if the opponent has used Dig or Fly (which otherwise makes it invulnerable for a turn). Not too many Pokemon learn it, however.

27. Where are we if we're acquiring HM01?

From Quiz Where in Kanto Are We? 3

Answer: S. S. Anne

HM01 is most likely the first Hidden Machine we'll acquire in the game (though Flash can also be acquired at this stage). The S.S. Anne will only be docked in Vermilion City for a short time, and once we obtain HM01, it will leave forever. During our trip on the ship, we can battle many trainers and collect many items. In fact, the S.S. Anne is home to the third battle against our rival. In "Pokémon Yellow, Red, or Blue", we can get an S.S. Anne Ticket from Bill on Route 25. HM01 contains the Cut ability.

28. Where are we if we're buying Lemonade, Fresh Water, and Soda Pop?

From Quiz Where in Kanto Are We? 2

Answer: Celadon City

These three items can be bought at the Rooftop Square on the top floor of the Celadon Department Store, and they cost $200-$300. We can use these items to gain entry to Saffron City by giving one to any of the four gatekeepers in each compass direction. The Celadon City Department Store has many items that we can use throughout the game. On the second floor, we can get everyday items and TMs, the fourth floor contains important items like Pokédolls and Elemental Stones, and the fifth floor contains specialty items. We can receive a TM18 from someone behind the counter on the third floor, and using the three drinks, we can get three more TMs on the top floor.

29. Where are we if we're using our Bike Voucher?

From Quiz Where in Kanto Are We?

Answer: Cerulean City

Although the Bike Voucher is picked up in Vermilion City, we don't actually use it unless we're trading it for a million-dollar bike in Cerulean City. The bike is one of the better items in the game allowing us to move across Kanto much faster than we normally would. Cerulean City is also home to the second gym leader, Misty, who uses water Pokémon to her advantage. Cerulean City connects to Mt. Moon to the west, and the Power Plant to the east.

30. On which floor of the Pokémon Tower can one find the healing platform?

From Quiz General "Red, Blue, and Yellow" Facts

Answer: Fifth floor

If you find that you're running low on HP or that you're poisoned or paralyzed while working your way up the Pokémon Tower, you can step into the healing platform on the fifth floor to regenerate your Pokémon. This platform was created by one of the channelers in the tower that broke free of the ghostly spells. At the top of the tower, you'll need to fight the Marowak and some Team Rocket members, so make sure that you'll be able to last the fights.
