Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which language family does Dalmatian belong to?

Answer: Romance

Dalmatia is a region of Slavic Croatia but the language was a Romance language.
2. Which of these is NOT an alternative name for this language?

Answer: Croatian

Ragusa was the former Italian name of Dubrovnik (one of the main cities of Dalmatia), where the language was spoken. Veglia is the former name of the island of Krk. Ragusan and Vegliotan are used alternatively for both the language itself and the dialects of that language.
3. Dalmatian was based mostly on Latin but borrowed words also from another language. Which one?

Answer: Croatian

It was natural since the speakers of these two languages were in contact with each other. The Croatian language has eventually become the main language of Dalmatia.
4. Is there such a language as Neo-Dalmatian?

Answer: Yes

Neo-Dalmatian, which is kind of a reconstruction of the extinct Dalmatian, is spoken by SOME people on the islands, especially those that are further away from the Croatian mainland.
5. The name of the last speaker of Dalmatian was Tuone Udaina. In what year did he die?

Answer: 1898

He died on June the 10th. He lived on the island of Krk. Dalmatian wasn't even his native tongue, he learned it by listening to his parents' conversations.
6. There were 50,000 Dalmatian speakers five years or so before Tuone Udaina's death.

Answer: True

Amazingly, it is true.
7. The masculine and feminine singular indefinite articles in Dalmatian were...?

Answer: Un, Una

The Dalmatian indefinite articles bear resemblance to those of a few other modern Romance languages. 'Neki' and 'neke' were the masculine and feminine plural indefinite articles.
8. 'Un om buanu'. If you were a man and I told you this, would it be a compliment?

Answer: Yes

'Un om buanu' means 'a good man'. 'Buanu' sounds like Spanish 'bueno' or Italian 'buono', doesn't it?
9. 'Una uzina granda'. What does this mean?

Answer: a big factory

'Uzina' is a factory and 'granda' is big.
10. In the Dalmatian alphabet, there is a consonant spelled 'xh'. How do you pronounce it?

Answer: 'dZ'

You probably put emphasis on the 'z' while pronouncing it. Thank you for playing this quiz on the extinct Dalmatian language!
