Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Meriet's brother's name?

Answer: Nigel

Leoric Aspley is Meriet's father, Janyn is his neighbour and the twin brother of Nigel's wife-to-be Roswitha. Brother Paul is master of the boys and novices at the Abbey.

(All my answers are from the book, but you may have noticed, if you have watched the movie, that Meriet's brother is called Tristan and several other characters have their names changed as well.)
2. For what offence was Meriet punished by flogging?

Answer: Assaulting Brother Jerome

Meriet assaulted Brother Jerome, his priest and confessor, after he found a lock of hair in Meriet's bed and burned it in front of him. Meriet was lucky not to have been excommunicated.
3. Where was Peter Clemence found?

Answer: Burned in a charcoal hearth

Peter Clemence was burned in a charcoal hearth where fuel for stoves and braziers was usually made. The other three answers were from other Cadfael books. The 94 legally dead bodies are from "One Corpes Too Many", the mill wheel is where Father Ailnoth turned up in "The Raven in the Foregate" and the frozen brook in where a young nun was found in "The Virgin in the Ice".
4. What vow did Cadfael admit was the hardest for him to keep?

Answer: Obedience

As part of their vows all monks took vows of celibacy, poverty, stability and obedience. Considering how many times we see Cadfael doing his own thing (much to the irritation of Prior Robert and Brother Jerome) is it any wonder that obedience is the vow he struggles with most?
5. According to Janyn "Men change their allegiance these days as they change their _______"

Answer: Shirt

"Cadfael" is set in a time of civil war when Empress Maud and King Stephen are fighting over the English throne. Janyn is suggesting that Peter Clemence is not dead as everyone believes but has changed sides and joined the Empress Maud.
6. What was Harald the run-away's trade before he fled his master?

Answer: Farrier

Harald was originally a farrier. A modern farrier's sole job would be caring for a horse's hooves and replacing shoes when necessary. In Cadfael's time a farrier not only cared for the horses' hooves but was a bit like a blacksmith in making and repairing tools and architectural pieces.
7. For what reason was the Aspley family coming to the Abbey of St Peter and St Paul?

Answer: A wedding

The entire family plus several neighbours and friends came to the Abbey for Roswitha and Nigel's wedding during which the true murderer was revealed.
8. What item, taken from Peter Clemence, revealed the murderer's identity?

Answer: A brooch

The dagger was found by Harald near the charcoal hearth and very nearly got him hung for a crime he didn't commit. The brooch was found in Roswitha's trunk by Isouda who put it on Roswitha cloak as they left the Abbey after the wedding. It was recognised and Roswitha was forced to tell everyone where she had got it.

The ring and cross were found on Peter's body therefore ruling out robbery.
9. Who put Peter Clemence where he was found?

Answer: Leoric Aspley

Leoric Aspley took Peter Clemence's body to the charcoal hearth and burnt it to protect Meriet and in particular his own honour.
Janyn and Nigel had no idea where Peter's body had been taken and Canon Eluard set out after Peter Clemence when he didn't return to find out just what had happened to him.
10. Who looks after the inmates at the Leper Hospital of St Giles?

Answer: Brother Mark

Brother Mark was originally Cadfael's assistant in the herbarium; after he left to work with the lepers at St Giles, Brother Oswin became Cadfeal's new assistant. Brother Heribert was originally Abbot Heribert until the end of "Monks Hood" when he was replaced by Abbot Radulfus and became an ordinary brother. Brother Petrus is cook to the Abbey and its dwellings.
