Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of work actor The Great Lorenzo is hired to double for kidnapped politician John Joseph Bonforte. What is Lorenzo's real name?

Answer: Lawrence Smythe

Bonforte is due to be adopted into the most prestigious family nest on Mars. If he does not show up for the ceremony, years of trust and co-operation between humans and Martians will all have been for nothing, and there may even be a war between the races.
2. Who is the spaceman who originally contacts Lorenzo, in the bar?

Answer: Dak Broadbent

Dak is at first reluctant to tell too many details of the job, but soon realises he can, and must, trust Smythe to do the right thing, and be able to carry off the impersonation of Bonforte.
3. Lorenzo has a severe phobia; what is he afraid of?

Answer: Martians

He hates, loathes, and detests Martians with an unreasoning phobic reaction. He thinks it is their smell that particularly gets to him, and also their alien tentacled appearance. He worries that he will not be able to enter the nest for the Ceremony of Adoption, when it is vital that he does so, but the doctor hypnotises him using some of Penny's perfume, and all is well.
4. What is the name of Bonforte's 'private yacht' spaceship?

Answer: Tom Paine

The Tom Paine is a 'torchship' and capable of making the journey from Earth to Mars in just three days. Heinlein also uses torchships in his book "Time for the Stars", first published in 1956.
5. What is Bonforte's "pet name" for his secretary Penny?

Answer: Curly-top

Bonforte often calls Penny curly-top. She is hopelessly in love with him, and has been for years. This is why she finds it hard to work with Lorenzo - she knows he is not the man she loves, but he is his double in every way.
6. Who is the Prime Minister in power at the beginning of the story, who Bonforte is in opposition to?

Answer: Quiroga

Quiroga and Bonforte are both longstanding leaders of their respective political parties, and as the story begins, Quiroga is in power. Boothroyd is the Commissioner of Mars, and also a member of Quiroga's Humanity Party. Capek is Bonforte's private physician, and is the one who hypnotises him to get over his irrational fear of Martians. Jacques 'Jock' Dubois is the spaceman who comes with Dak to recruit Lorenzo, and dies saving Dak's life when the Martian conspirators move against them.
7. As Bonforte, Lorenzo must go to the Imperial Capital on the Moon, for an audience with the King. What is the Capital?

Answer: New Batavia

New Batavia on the Moon is built to withstand a direct nuclear attack if necessary. The King and all his immediate family live there, and there are official quarters for the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and various high ranking officials. It also houses the administrative centre of the Empire, where all the 'real work' is done.
8. Who is the only person to spot the deception and realise that Lorenzo is not Bonforte?

Answer: King Willem

During his audience with the King, Lorenzo is concentrating on acting correctly and following all the proper protocols. King Willem suspects something is up, but is only certain Lorenzo is an impostor when he shows interest in the King's collection of model railway trains; Bonforte always used to make fun of a "grown man playing with toys".

He asks if Lorenzo is an assassin come to kill him. Once he has the whole story he asks for Lorenzo's autograph, and wishes him luck.
9. When Bill Corpsman tries to expose Lorenzo to the press, what does he have as "proof" that Lorenzo is not Bonforte?

Answer: A water glass with fingerprints on it

Bill never liked Smythe, and when Bill left the Bonforte team in a fit of pique, he was determined to get his revenge and expose the impersonation. Luckily for Lawrence, his team have thought of everything, and it is Lawrence's fingerprints that are now on file as Bonforte's in the official database.
10. What happens to the real Bonforte in the end?

Answer: He dies during the election victory party

After the ordeal of his kidnapping, Bonforte is much weakened and has a stroke. Although he seems to be on the road to recovery, during the private victory party after "he" wins the election, he seems to fall asleep. Sadly though, he has passed away at the moment of his triumph.
