2. If you hear someone say it is 'brass monkeys' outside, what is it like?

Answer: Very cold

It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. This is thought to have originated in the days of sailing ships. The 'monkey' was a piece of brass which held cannonballs in a stack. When the temperature dropped the brass contracted at a faster rate than the iron cannonballs and so spilled them on deck.

Hence 'it's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey'. The true origin of the phrase is, in truth, unknown.
