Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Moses the Raven tells the animals about what mythical place?

Answer: Sugarcandy Mountain

Moses the Raven is representative of religion, which many of the animals believe in. He leaves with Jones after the humans are forced off the farm but returns and the pigs don't object to his return as his stories keep the animals distracted.
2. What event causes the animals to initially chase the humans off the farm?

Answer: They haven't been fed

Jones and his men are drunk and forget to feed the animals. Boxer is able to kick his way out of the shed and the animals break into the food store. Jones returns, and tries to restore order but the animals chase after him.
3. What is the first rule of Animalism to be altered by Squealer?

Answer: The rule about beds

The pigs are sleeping in the beds of the humans and Squealer explains to the others that the rules actually state "No animal may sleep in a bed - with sheets". It is the first commandment broken and it won't be the last.
4. Squealer amends the following commandment. What two words complete the amended version? "No animal may kill another animal __________ __________".

Answer: Without cause

Napoleon orders the rules changed to justify his mass killing by the dogs of treasonous animals and so-called treasonous animals. He does not tolerate dissent and frequently uses terror tactics to keep the other animals in line. Interestingly enough, he sends his dogs to attack Boxer, but Boxer defeats them so Napoleon calls off the attack.
5. Complete Boxer's maxim: "Napoleon is always -"

Answer: right

Boxer is the strongest animal on the farm but is very simple. He cannot learn more than four letters of the alphabet at any one time. He adopts the slogans "Napoleon is always right" and "I will work harder" as his own.
6. How many times does the windmill get destroyed?

Answer: 2

The windmill falls down during a night of particularly strong winds. Napoleon is quick to blame Snowball for the calamity. During the battle for Animal Farm between Mr Pinchfield and the animals, the humans blow up the windmill as a final act of vengeance.
7. What is the name on the side of the "Horse Slaughterer and Glue Boiler" van that carts away Boxer?

Answer: Alfred Simmons

Frederick Pinchfield is the farmer who attacks Animal Farm. Whymper (first name invented) is a solicitor from the village who encourages Animal Farm to trade. Eric Blair is the real name of George Orwell.
8. What is delivered to the farm after the death of Boxer?

Answer: A crate of whiskey

The pigs discover a forgotten cache of whiskey after the Battle of Animal Farm in the cellar and get drunk. They like this and make arrangements to acquire more alcohol. After Boxer is sold to the glue manufacturer, the pigs have a whole crate delivered for their consumption.
9. In the 1950's cartoon version, the pigs are overthrown by the remaining animals, led by Benjamin.

Answer: True

The animal rebellion has spread to a few other farms and the pigs from those farms all come to Animal Farm for a conference. Benjamin and the others look through the farmhouse windows and see the pigs turn into humans. This is the final betrayal and the animals decide to overthrow the pigs.
10. What card is played by Napoleon and Mr Pilkington?

Answer: Ace of Spades

The novel has the other local farmers round at Manor Farm (Animal Farm as a name has been dropped) for a celebratory drink. There is a card game after the toasting between the farmers and it turns out that both Napoleon and Mr Pilkington have each played the Ace of Spades. The animals then realise that the pigs and the humans are identical and the novel finishes there.
