Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Victor Frankenstein doing when we first meet him?

Answer: He is drifting on an ice floe in Arctic waters

The first time we see Victor Frankenstein, he has been spotted by the crew of Captain Robert Walton's ship adrift on an ice floe in Arctic waters. A very bizarre scene plays out, because he will not come aboard until after finding out where the ship is bound.
2. Why does Victor Frankenstein tell his fantastic story to Robert Walton?

Answer: Victor sees Walton as a man obsessed with a goal like he was

Victor Frankenstein comes aboard and is treated with great kindness by Captain Robert Walton. When Victor learns that Walton's one desire is to find the passage through Arctic waters to the North Pacific Ocean, he decides to to tell Walton the story of his own obsession. Victor hopes that Walton will find a moral in the tale because he believes Walton is traveling the same dangerous path that Victor traveled with such disastrous results.
3. How long does it take Victor Frankenstein to give his creature life?

Answer: Nearly two years

Victor Frankenstein had worked tirelessly for nearly two years to give life to his creation. It was from haunting charnel houses, dissecting rooms, and slaughterhouses that Frankenstein obtained the materials for his work. He thought that if he could create new life, he would eventually be able to give life back to the dead, also.
4. Which of the following does NOT describe Frankenstein's creature?

Answer: It looked out with the clear blue eyes of a child

Victor had given his creation features that he thought would make it beautiful, but they only served to make him more hideous. The lustrous, black hair was attached to a face over which yellow skin just barely covered the veins and muscle. He gave his creature beautiful white teeth, but its lips were black.

The eyes were a yellowish color and watery. Victor had made his creature eight feet tall so that it would have strength and endurance in proportion to its size, but what Victor really had was a creature that looked like what it was--an animated corpse.
5. From the moment his creation opened its eyes, Frankenstein was disgusted and filled with horror at the being he had made.

Answer: True

As soon as Victor's creation opened its eyes, all Victor felt was disgust and horror for the thing he had made. Victor could not bear the sight of his creature. He hurried from the room and sought forgetfulness in sleep.
6. Which of the following does NOT happen on the day after Frankenstein's creature comes to life?

Answer: Victor found his manservant strangled in an alley near his rooms

Victor's creature came to life on a dreary night in November. Victor awakes the next morning to find his creature gone. Victor's friend, Henry Clerval, arrived that day in Ingolstadt. Victor suffers a complete mental collapse and does not regain his senses until spring. During this time, the faithful Henry is Victor's only nurse.
7. When Frankenstein's monster first sees the child William, his first thought is to kill him.

Answer: No

The creature has read Victor Frankenstein's papers, and he knows how and who made him. He also learns just how loathsome and disgusting Victor thinks his creation is. The creature blames Victor for giving it life when its appearance is so hideous. The creature has been shunned by every person he has met.

When he sees William, he thinks that the child is too young to be prejudiced because of his hideous appearance. He plans to kidnap the child and raise him. When William blurts out that his last name is Frankenstein, the creature is filled with rage.

When the child screams, the creature tries to quiet him by pressing his hands around the child's neck. The child ends up strangled to death. The creature then sees Justine sleeping in the barn. He realizes he can never have the lovely girl, so he puts the miniature he took from William into her pocket knowing she will be accused of murdering the child.
8. Does Victor Frankenstein ever give a name to the being he animated?

Answer: No

When I hear the name Frankenstein, I see the lumbering monster created by Boris Karloff in the 1931 film "Frankenstein". Actually, the creature in the novel is agile and highly intelligent. The name Frankenstein refers to the creator and not his creation. Nowhere in the book does Victor gives his creature a name. "Miserable monster", "wretch", "demon", "vile insect", and "fiend" were some of the words Victor used in describing his creation.
9. Which of the following is NOT true about the life the creature led while hiding in a hovel next to the cottage of Felix, Agatha, and their blind father?

Answer: The creature killed the family in a rage after they rejected him

It was on the summit of Mountanvert that Victor encounters his creature and agrees to listen to his story. The creature tells Victor of the cruelty he encountered at the hands of the villagers because of his hideous appearance. He tells him of his many months hiding in a hovel next to the cottage of the old blind man and his family.

It was from them that he learned to speak, read, and to love music. At night he would cut wood and do other chores for the family. He began to love the family and wanted to join them.

His attempts at contacting the family were disastrous. The creature was driven out of their cottage, and when he came back, he finds the family has abandoned their home.
10. What does Frankenstein's creature do when he sees a young girl fall into a stream?

Answer: He jumps into the stream and pulls her out

The creature tells Victor that after seeing a young girl being carried away by the stream, he jumps in and pulls her out. He is trying to revive her when a man, seeing the creature with the girl, shoots him.
11. Was Frankenstein's creature created evil?

Answer: No

Frankenstein did not put an evil or abnormal brain into its skull. It was the way that the creature was treated by people it met that made it do evil things. Victor had made the his creature so unlovely that he was unloveable. The creature says to his creator: "I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend."
12. How does the creature know that Victor is his creator?

Answer: The creature reads Frankenstein's papers

The creature had found some clothes in Victor's laboratory and put them on. In the pocket were some papers. When the creature learned to read, he finds out that the papers were not only a record of his creation, but they also tell how very loathsome Victor found the creature to be.
13. After Victor destroys the creature's mate, what does the creature say?

Answer: I will be with you on your wedding night

"Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay to mould me man, did I solicit thee from darkness to promote me?" These lines are from John Milton's "Paradise Lost", which was one of the creature's favorite books. What he said to Frankenstein was: "I will be with you on your wedding night." The creature kept his promise, and Victor's wedding night ends in a horrible tragedy. Why did Victor agree to make the creature a mate? He was moved by the solitary state that his hideous creation was forced to live in.

He destroyed the female because he could not bear to let loose another of these hideous beings on the world.
14. Which of the following people that Victor loves does the creature NOT destroy?

Answer: Ernest Frankenstein

The first victim was William. Justine was framed by the creature for William's murder and executed. Henry Clerval was murdered soon after Victor destroyed the creature's mate, and Elizabeth was strangled on her wedding night. Shortly after Elizabeth's murder, Victor's father dies, a heartbroken old man. Victor's brother, Ernest, was the only one that escaped the creature's vengence.
15. Does the creature kill Victor Frankenstein?

Answer: No

After his father's death, Victor sets out to hunt down his creature and destroy it. His search finally leds him to the Arctic, but his health has been broken. Shortly after helping Captain Walton to record his fantastic tale, Victor Frankenstein lapses into a fever and dies.

After his death, Frankenstein's creature comes aboard and gives a moving speech. He says he will gather wood for his own funeral pyre and set himself aflame. As the story ends, the creature jumps from the window of Victor's cabin onto a raft of ice and drifts off into the night.
