Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rod Gilbert is perhaps the greatest player in the history of the New York Rangers. Which one of these statements about Gilbert is true?

Answer: He played his entire NHL career with the Rangers

Rod Gilbert played his entire NHL career (1960-78) with the New York Rangers. This speedy Montreal-born winger shot right-handed and possessed a powerful slapshot. Gilbert scored 406 regular season goals during his career and added 34 Stanley Cup playoff tallies.

Unfortunately, Gilbert never played on a Stanley Cup winning team, but he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. Gilbert's number 7 jersey was retired by the Rangers.
2. Goaltender Eddie Giacomin played for the New York Rangers for 11 seasons (1965-1976). Which uniform number did Giacomin wear for the blueshirts?

Answer: 1

Giacomin wore uniform number 1 with pride and class, and he won the Vezina Trophy for goaltending excellence in 1971. Giacomin was a superb stick handler who often started counter-attacks with his crisp passing ability. Giacomin's number 1 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 1989. Giacomin won 266 regular season games as a member of the Broadway Blues.
3. Center Jean Ratelle played for the New York Rangers from 1960 to 1976. During the 1975-76 season, which Boston Bruins' superstar was traded to the Rangers in exchange for Ratelle?

Answer: Phil Esposito

Jean Ratelle was a classy center iceman who played alongside Rod Gilbert for more than a decade. Ratelle scored 336 regular season goals for the Rangers. His best season with the blueshirts occurred in 1971-72 when he scored 46 goals and 109 points for New York.

In November 1975, Ranger fans were shocked when they learned that Ratelle had been traded to the Boston Bruins in exchange for center Phil Esposito. The complete trade was Ratelle, Brad Park, and Joe Zanussi in exchange for Esposito and Carol Vadnais.

The trade ended up helping both franchises, as Ratelle and Esposito continued their excellent play for their new teams.
4. Harry Howell (#3) appeared in 1160 games for the New York Rangers during his 17 seasons with the blueshirts. Which position did Howell play?

Answer: defense

Harry Howell was a classic "defensive" defenseman. Howell rarely led rushes up ice, but he provided the Rangers with a steady brand of defense from 1952 to 1969. Howell won the Norris Trophy in 1967 in tribute to his solid defensive skills. Howell played 1160 regular season games for the Broadway Blues, and his number 3 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 2009.
5. During the 1971-72 season, which New York Rangers' forward became the first player in club history to score 50 goals in a single season?

Answer: Mike Gartner

Mike Gartner was an explosive goal scorer during his NHL career with 708 regular season tallies. Gartner scored 173 goals in just 322 games for the Rangers between 1989 and 1994. However, it was felt by some members of New York's front office that Gartner wasn't tough enough for the rigors of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Therefore, Gartner was dealt late in the 1993-94 season to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for veteran winger Glenn Anderson. Gartner thus missed out on New York's Stanley Cup celebration in June 1994.
8. Defenseman Brian Leetch was one of the greatest players in the history of the New York Rangers. Following the 1988-89 season, Leetch was selected as the Rookie of the Year in the NHL. Which trophy did Leetch win for his efforts that season?

Answer: Mike Richter

Mike Richter made history during the 2000-01 season when he earned his 267th career victory, eclipsing the Rangers' club mark that had been set by Eddie Giacomin. Richter and the Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in overtime. Richter played his entire NHL career (1989-2003) with the Rangers, compiling a record of 301-258.
