Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was James Bond born?

Answer: Wattenscheid

Bond was born in 1920 in Wattenscheid, Switzerland. His father, Andrew Bond was a Scot and his mother, Monique Delacroix was Swiss. They both died in a climbing accident in the Aigulles Rouges when Bond was a child. Evelyn St. Croix Fleming was Ian Fleming's mother and Kitzbuhel was where Ian Fleming studied in Austria before the War.
2. What was the acronym for the Soviet counter espionage agency that was one of Bond's main adversaries?

Answer: SMERSH

"SMERSH" (short for Smert Shpionam, or "Death to Spies") was a counterintelligence department in the Soviet Union formed during World War II. "SMERSH" was later used by the KGB to hunt down spies and subversive elements outside of the USSR. "SPECTRE" was a purely fictitious organisation created by Ian Fleming and first appeared in "Thunderball". "SPECTRE" or the "The Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion" was headed by Ernst Stavro Blofeld. "THRUSH" was the adversary in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." TV series. Neither "THRUSH" nor "UNCLE" actually stood for anything but following persistent questions from viewers the names "Technical Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity" and "United Network Command for Law and Enforcement" were created.

The Soviet "NKVD" or People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs was formed from the State Political Directorate, or "GPU" and was the predecessor of the "KGB", Committee for State Security.
3. What was the name of James Bond's first secretary?

Answer: Loelia Ponsonby

Loelia Ponsonby was Bond's secretary in books 3,4 and 5, "Moonraker", "Diamonds Are Forever" and "From Russia With Love".
Mary Goodnight was also Bond's secretary but she did not appear until book 11, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
Miss Moneypenny was of course "M"s secretary.
Tilly Masterson was the heroine in Goldfinger.
4. What was the full name of James Bond's boss?

Answer: Admiral Sir Miles Messervy

Although hinted at in a number of the books, "M"s full name was not revealed until Fleming's final book, "The Man With The Golden Gun".
Sir James Molony was the Secret Service psychiatrist who appeared in "Doctor No" and "You Only Live Twice".
During the Second World War Ian Fleming was the Personal Assistant to Admiral John Godfrey who was the Director of Naval Intelligence.
5. In "Doctor No", Bond compared Honeychile Rider to Botticelli's "Venus" but what disfigurement marred her almost perfect beauty?

Answer: Broken nose

She had a broken nose caused by a former lover.
Bond had a scar on his hand where a SMERSH agent had carved the symbol for "spy". He also had a three-inch scar on the right cheek. Scaramanga, "The Man With The Golden Gun", could be identified by his third nipple.
6. What was the name of the first "Bond Girl" to appear in the books?

Answer: Vesper

It is believed that the character of Vesper Lynd was based on the real life Countess Krystyna Skarbek who was a Polish born spy known as Christine Granville. The Countess was apparently strikingly beautiful and a decorated World War II hero.
In the book Bond created his own cocktail, which he called a Vesper after his heroine. It consisted of three measures of "Gordon's" gin, one of vodka and half a measure of "Kina Lillet" vermouth. It was shaken until ice-cold, then served in a deep champagne goblet with a large thin slice of lemon-peel.
7. Bond had his cigarettes specially made for him by Morland's. What were they called?

Answer: Macedonian Blend

His Macedonian Blend cigarettes were a mixture of Balkan and Turkish tobacco. Bond smoked Chesterfield's when in the US, Royal Blend in The West Indies and Diplomates in Turkey.
8. Which handgun did James Bond carry in "From Russia With Love"?

Answer: Beretta .25 calibre

James Bond initially used a Beretta .25 calibre but was almost killed when the silencer stuck as he tried to draw the gun in "From Russia With Love". In "Doctor No", Major Boothroyde, better known as "Q", advised him to use either a Walther PPK 7.65mm or a Smith and Wesson Airweight Centennial .38 calibre. "Q" referred to the Beretta as a "ladies gun". Bond chose the Walther.
The Makarov was issued to the Soviet military and the design was based on the Walther PPK.
9. Which car did Bond first own?

Answer: Bentley 4.5 Litre

In "Casino Royal" Bond drove a 4.5 litre Bentley. It was eventually written off in "Moonraker". The 4.5 litre supercharged "Blower" Bentley was specifically built for racing and only about 50 were ever made. In total Bond owned 3 Bentleys. At the end of "Moonraker" he purchased a new 1953 Bentley Mk VI with an open touring body.

In "Thunderball" he bought a wrecked Mark II Continental with an R-Type chassis. He upgraded the engine to the Mark IV 4.9 litre and commissioned a convertible two-seater body from Mulliners.

In "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" he further upgraded the car, against Rolls Royce's advice, with an Arnott supercharger. In "Goldfinger" the Secret Service provided Bond with an Aston Martin DB III with some "extras" fitted.

The Aston Martin DB V appeared in the "Goldfinger" movie but never in the books.
