Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the musical there is never any real mention of Jean Valjean's family. Is his family mentioned in the book?

Answer: Yes, his sister and her children play small parts

Jean Valjean never married. He had a sister, who was a widow, with several young children. He looked after them, but they never had enough to eat. One day he stole a loaf of bread to feed them. He was caught and sent to jail and he never heard from them again.
2. According to both versions, Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread and goes to prison. After getting out of prison, what else does he steal?

Answer: Silverware

He steals the Bishop's silverware and gets caught. However, the Bishop tells the police that he had given Jean Valjean the silver. He also tells Jean Valjean to take the silver candlesticks so that he can start again.
3. In the musical we are not really given any reason for Jean Valjean's death at the end. Why does he die, in the book?

Answer: From a broken heart

According to the book he died because he was no longer able to see Cosette. Although he did see her one last time, it apparently was not enough to save him.
4. In both versions he saves three lives at the barricade; who were they?

Answer: Javert, Marius and himself

He saves Javert's life, by letting him go free after he was recognised as a spy and given the death penalty. He saves Marius (and himself) by carrying him through the sewers to safety.
5. In the musical, which of these is not one of his lines?

Answer: "I was born inside a jail"

Javert sings "I was born inside a jail" during the song "Confrontation". Jean Valjean sings "Who am I?" when he is deciding whether to give himself up or not. He sings "24601" at the end of the previous song. Finally, he sings "Bring him Home" when he is asking God to spare Marius' life at the barricade.
6. Which of these lines did Jean not say, in the book, when he is contemplating giving himself up?

Answer: "Who am I?"

Although the line is sung in the musical, the line "Who am I?" is never said by Jean Valjean in the book. "What is the matter, Javert?" is said when Javert is about to tell Jean Valjean that he had thought that Jean Valjean was a convict. He also told him that the real Jean Valjean had been caught. "Denounce yourself!" is said when he is contemplating whether to give himself up or not. "How stupid I am!" is said when he has decided to see what happens in the court, and he thinks he heard someone outside.
7. In both of the versions, after he was arrested Jean Valjean was given a number. What was the number?

Answer: 24601

Javert calls him this several times during the musical. It is mentioned in several places in the book. In the book he gets a second number after being arrested a second time.
8. In the musical we first see Jean Valjean being released from prison. What is he doing when we first see him in the book?

Answer: Looking for somewhere to stay

When we first see Jean Valjean in the book, he has already been released from prison and is looking for a place to stay for the night.
9. Which of these key events of Jean Valjean's life doesn't happen in *both* the book and the musical?

Answer: Taking a coin from Gervais

In the book Jean Valjean takes a coin from a boy called Gervais. This happens just after he leaves the Bishop, with the candlesticks. The book says he does this without thinking, because of all the changes he was experiencing at the time. He later attempts to return the coin.
10. In the musical, all the ghosts of the people whom Jean had met through the story appear to him when he is dying. Does this happen in the book?

Answer: None appear, but the book says that the Bishop was present

Unlike in the musical, there were no ghosts in the room, except for possibly the Bishop (who could not be seen, but was felt by Jean Valjean).
