Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's see, we're at S. Lat. 47, 9', W. Long. 126, 43', smack dab in the South Pacific. There's a boat here. The one surviving crewman seems rather upset; maybe it's the huge octopus dragon thing that's stampeding out of its sunken island tomb. Some people panic at the drop of hat. What story is this?

Answer: The Call of Cthulhu

This is one of Lovecraft's most famous stories. If Cthulhu calls, don't answer. Seriously. He won't shut up and will keep you on the line forever.
2. Well, off to merry old England. Here we are at a pleasant little madhouse at Hanwell. A man named de la Poer gibbers and scratches at the padded walls, screaming at something only he can hear. What does he hear?

Answer: The Rats in the Walls

One lousy instance of cannibalism and you're the neighborhood weirdo.
3. Some people just don't know when the party's over. All but one of the guests left when the hideous corpse thing slunk in. The last guy screams in horror at the thing's rotted flesh and protruding bones. Poor schmuck doesn't realize he's looking in a mirror! What story?

Answer: The Outsider

Hint from Heloise: If you're going to rise from your crypt and crash a party, bring a bottle of wine or something. It's only polite.
4. Boston, Mass: We're in a creepy looking cellar that's been outfitted into an artist's studio. The wild-eyed painter is creating a portrait of legions of ghouls feeding on subway commuters. What was that noise? The artist draws a pistol and disappears into a deeper room. Six shots ring out. Those crazy artists. What story is this?

Answer: Pickman's Model

Pickman shows up later in another story, after having transformed himself into a ghoul.
5. Ah, the New England countryside. An undertaker named George Birch has managed to get himself locked in a burial vault. No prob, he'll just stack the coffins and climb out through the window. Um, did that top coffin just shift? What story is this?

Answer: In the Vault

In retrospect, cutting that corpse's feet off so it'd fit in the small coffin might have been a poor choice.
6. Off to Europe. We're in a squalid apartment on the top floor of a wretched building on the Rue d'Auseil, somewhere in France. A metaphysics student runs screaming from the room. What did he just experience?

Answer: The Music of Erich Zann

It's not every violinist who can keep playing after he dies.
7. We now return to the US, to a miserable little Massachusetts town on the Mistaktonic River. There's a destroyed farmhouse here; it looks as if something huge burst out from the inside. A group of townsfolk stands on a hill screaming at something in the sky. What is this weird place?

Answer: Dunwich (The Dunwich Horror)

Dunwich was one of those charming imaginary towns were everyone worships horrible demons.
8. On to Vermont! A man shines his flashlight around an empty parlor, lingering on an odd, metal cylinder. He's about to leave when he notices something on the easy chair. My God, that's not a human face, is it? What horror is this?

Answer: The Whisperer in Darkness

The guy must have loved hockey, there was a face off in the corner. Get it? And yes, the guy's brain was in the cylinder. Lovecraft was writing 'brain in the jar' stories long before they were popular.
9. We now come to Nahum Gardner's farmhouse in the Miskatonic Valley. Looks like a big old meteorite hit here. But it's strange...what kind of meteorite is soft and glows at night? What is this thing?

Answer: The Colour out of Space

Lovecraft was American, but he used British spellings like 'colour'.
10. Woo-hoo! I'm at a frat house! The Psi Delta house at Brown University, to be exact. One of the frat boys suggests they go check on their neighbor, Robert Blake. He's been staring, unmoving, out his window since the power failure last night. Turns out he's dead. The authorities find one last garbled note, gibberish about the 'Shining Trapezohedron' and 'The three-lobed, burning eye.' What horror did this young man experience?

Answer: The Haunter of the Dark

This story was dedicated to Robert Bloch, a young fan of Lovecraft's. Bloch went on to write the novel 'Psycho,' on which the famous movie was based.
11. Back to another madhouse, the Arkham Sanitarium. A patient named Edward Derby sits reading. He's calm and collected and does not seem like a mental patient at all. Suddenly, a visitor enters his cell and shoots him six times in the head. But the visitor was his best friend, Dan! What story is this?

Answer: The Thing on the Doorstep

After meeting the thing on the doorstep, Dan knew killing Derby was the most humane thing to do.
12. Back to good old Massachusetts. It's the winter of 1927 and strange things are afoot in this odd seaport town. US soldiers are herding up various citizens and placing them in special camps. The citizens have an odd look about them. They don't seem to blink and have flabby lips and almost hairless heads. Offshore, there's a disturbance in the ocean. A navy submarine is firing torpedoes at something underwater. What story are we in?

Answer: The Shadow Over Innsmouth

This is one of Lovecraft's more popular stories.
13. Once more we return to the fictional town of Arkham. A gale has destroyed the roof of a boarding house. Workmen clear through the rubble of the vacant room of one Walter Gilman, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. What they find in the rubbish causes them to call the police. The space above the slanting roof was filled with the bones of children, books on black magic, and the body of a strange ratlike creature. What kind of weird house is this?

Answer: The Dreams in the Witch-House

Always read your rental agreement carefully. You never know if there's an undead witch living in the attic.
14. It's 1896. We're in the middle of the densely wooded Miskatonic Valley. A dilapidated cottage has just been struck by lightning. A young cyclist runs from the burning building in horror. Strangely, it's not the fire that has scared him. What's this all about?

Answer: The Picture in the House

He got freaked out when he realized the owner ate human flesh. Probably a vegan.
15. We end our tour in the Australian Outback. Miskatonic U has sponsered an archaeological dig here and has uncovered the remains of a pre-human city. An elderly professor by the name of Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee walks through the ruins at night. If the city is more ancient than man, why does it seem so familiar to him? What story is this?

Answer: The Shadow out of Time

Another one of Lovecraft's great stories with a suprise ending you can seem coming from page one. Hope you enjoyed this quiz. Until next time, Cthulhu fhtagn!
