1. How did Brent, Adrienne's son-in-law, die?

Answer: Testicular cancer

Brent was married to Amanda, Adrienne's daughter. He died from an aggressive strain of testicular cancer. Amanda was left with two young boys but was having difficulty coping with the loss of her young husband. The book is a story within a story as Adrienne tries to help Amanda cope by revealing a loss of her own that started in Rodanthe.
2. Prior to telling Amanda about Rodanthe, who else had Adrienne told?

Answer: Her father

Adrienne's father was the only person she had ever told about Rodanthe. Her father had always been a good listener. A stroke had left him in a nursing home and unable to speak, but she knew he understood her. By her father just listening to her, it allowed her to cope with the sequence of events that started in Rodanthe.
3. Where is Rodanthe?

Answer: North Carolina

Adrienne was from Rocky Mount but filled in as innkeeper for her friend Jean one weekend in Rodanthe. Rodanthe is a small village town on the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

Matt, Amanda and Dan were Adrienne's children. After Brent's death, Matt and Dan tried to stay active in Amanda's life. They thought Amanda was giving up on life and that she had forgotten she had two children that needed her.

Years later, when Linda divorced Jack, he realized he was wrong for leaving Adrienne.

Dr Paul Flanner was newly divorced. A renowned surgeon, he had just sold his home and medical practice in Raleigh. He was as lonely as Adrienne and reflecting on his life choices.

Right after surgery, Robert Torrelson's wife had died for no apparent reason. He was suing Dr Flanner for wrongful death. Although it looked like Mr Torrelson would lose his case because the autopsy and physician review boards could find no wrongdoing or negligence, Mr Torrelson was bitter and wanted to speak directly to Dr Flanner.

He sent him a letter requesting to meet him. He wanted him to know more about his wife. He did not want her to be just another patient.
8. Where was Dr Flanner planning to go after Rodanthe?

Answer: Ecuador

Dr Flanner was a dedicated surgeon. He was world renowned for his surgical techniques. Mark was his only child. His son followed his footsteps into medicine but that is where the similarities stopped. He chose to be a practitioner and after getting basic skills, he went into international relief work.

He worked in a clinic in Ecuador. Paul sold his home and practice to go to Ecuador and try to have a relationship with his son.
9. What caused Dr Flanner's death?

Answer: Jeep accident

Dr Flanner's son, Mark, had gone to the mountains to work in a clinic. After raining for days, mudslides were inevitable but Mark couldn't get his jeep started. Dr Flanner went to the mountains to rescue his son before the mudslides started. A mudslide took out the mountain clinic just after he reached them and were on their way back to the village clinic! With the village in sight, the road gave in and their jeep rolled. Mark suffered a few broken bones but his father died.
10. What was Dr Flanner's surprise gift to Adrienne?

Answer: Her father's nursing home bill paid

Because of Mark's injuries, he had to tell Adrienne of his father's death by letter. Adrienne and Mark had never met prior to that letter. He did come to her home after his injuries allowed and told her of the gift his father wanted to surprise her with. Dr Flanner had taken care of her father's nursing home bill until his death. She no longer had to fret over his nursing care.
