Dr Flanner went to the mountains to rescue his son before the mudslides started. A mudslide took out the mountain clinic just after he reached them and were on their way back to the village clinic! With the village in sight, the road gave in and their jeep rolled. Mark suffered a few broken bones but his father died.

Because of Mark's injuries, he had to tell Adrienne of his father's death by letter. Adrienne and Mark had never met prior to that letter.
