On October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier. This means he was the first person to travel faster than the speed of sound. When someone/something breaks the sound barrier it makes a loud noise called a sonic boom. An example of this is thunder.

When lightning strikes, it is going faster than the speed of sound and the loud noise that follows a few seconds later is actually a sonic boom that we call thunder.

Alexander Graham Bell is generally given recognition as the inventor of the first practical telephone. There were others at the same time trying to make the same invention and they all borrowed ideas from one another. Bell was granted the first American patent for a telephone in 1876. Bell's interest in sound transmission started early in life as he had family members who were deaf.

He had aspired to find a way for the deaf to hear.

Magellan's expedition of 1519 was the first to sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific by way of what is now known as the Strait of Magellan. This expedition went on to be the first to cross the Pacific. Only 18 men completed this mission from beginning to end, landing in Spain in 1522. Magellan himself died along the way at the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines.

These brave men proved to the European world that the earth was not flat and that the Orient could be reached by ocean travel as well the already known overland trek.

Henry Ford was the founder of the Ford Motor Company. His assembly line process made mass production of automobiles practical and changed the personal transportation industry forever. He also changed the way the world traveled. Until his model T and model A cars were invented and sold, everyone traveled on foot or by using horses, camels, elephants and other large animals. John Ford was a famous American film director. Gerald Ford was the 38th President of the United States.

In November of 1895 Wilhelm Roentgen accidentally discovered a wavelength that has been named Roentgen waves or, as they are now more commonly known, X-rays. His invention allows your doctor to look inside of your body without performing surgery. He won the very first Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery.

His X-ray machine has saved countless lives since its discovery. He was definately someone who did something that other people thought was impossible.

Louis Braille invented a type of alphabet that consisted of raised dots. It opened up the world of books to those who were blind. You will sometimes see Braille writing on doors, elevators, and other objects that have buttons or labels or other types of instructions for use.

Helen Keller was the first person who was both deaf and blind to have graduated from an American college. In spite of being both blind and deaf since she was 19 months old, she went on to become an author, lecturer and a political activist. She was outspoken on her beliefs against war, and was a very vocal supporter for women's right to vote.

She was blessed with a companion/teacher, by the name of Anne Sullivan, who helped her to achieve this success. At this time in history, those who were blind and deaf, or with other disabilities were often sent to institutions where no one attempted to educate them.
