Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What book is this from? "Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the Farmer's wife."

Answer: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," L. Frank Baum

This classic was made into a musical, though I recommend that everyone also read the book, since the movie lacks certain scenes.
2. What book is this from? "The villagers of little Hangleton still called it 'the Riddle House' even though it had been many years since the Riddle family had lived there."

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," J.K. Rowling

The Riddle House is where the father of Voldemort, the evil wizard, is. It is not known to many that Voldemort's name was originally Tom Marvolo Riddle, but Harry finds that out in Book 2, when he comes across the preserved memory of Tom Riddle.
3. What book is this from? "Lyra and her daemon moved through the darkening hall, taking care to keep to one side, out of sight of the kitchen."

Answer: "The Golden Compass/Northern Lights," Philip Pullman

In this quote, the main character, Lyra, is sneaking into "the Retiring Room" to have a look around, even though she's not allowed to. Will she get caught? If you haven't already, find out by reading the book! The book is known as "The Golden Compass" in North America, and "Northern Lights" in the UK.
4. "When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton."

Answer: "The Fellowship of the Ring," J.R.R. Tolkien

While this quote is taken from "The Fellowship of the Ring", Bilbo DOES have a whole book to himself, called "The Hobbit." I would recommend both books to any fantasy lover.
5. What book is this from? "Each year, at the end of March, a great fair was held in Cria, the capital of Galla."

Answer: "Wild Magic," Tamora Pierce

Tamora Pierce is the writer of several series about Tortall, a magical world loosely based on our world's Middle Ages, where magical people are called gifted people. "Wild Magic" is part of a series about a girl named Daine who has a special kind of magic that gives her a bond with animals.
6. What book is this from? "Lessa woke, cold. Cold with more than the chill of the everlastingly clammy stone walls."

Answer: "Dragonflight," Anne McCaffrey

The series by Anne McCaffrey "The Dragonriders of Pern" is about a planet where the humans depend on Dragons and their riders, who are telepathically connected, to protect the planet from a carbon-based organism (of sorts) called thread that eats any organic material it comes in contact with. Lessa, later in "Dragonflight", becomes one of these heroic Dragonriders.

She also makes an appearance in several other Anne McCaffrey books.
7. What book is this from? "Matthias cut a comical little figure as he wobbled his way along the cloisters, with his large sandals flip-flopping and his tail peeping from beneath the baggy folds of an oversized novice's habit."

Answer: "Redwall," Brian Jaques

Even though they aren't quite fantasy books as most people think of the genre, I would still recommend "The Wind in the Willows", "Watership Down", and "Redwall", which are some of my all-time favorites.
8. What book is this from? "The Time Traveller (for so it will be convenient to speak of him) was expounding a recondite matter to us."

Answer: "The Time Machine," H.G. Wells

"The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells was one of the first Science Fiction books out there, so I thought it merited mention in this quiz. A major motion picture was also made of it, but I never saw it.
9. What book is this from? "A small lizard perched on a brown stone. Feeling threatened by the approach of human beings along the path, it metamorphosed into a sting ray beetle, then into a stench puffer, then into a fiery salamander."

Answer: "A Spell for Chameleon," Piers Anthony

Piers Anthony writes about a world called Xanth, which is loosely based geographically on the state Florida. His writing is fun to read, as it is light and full of puns.
10. What book is this from? "Part of the problem, Nita thought as she tore desperately down Rose Avenue, is that I can't keep my mouth shut."

Answer: "So You Want to be a Wizard," Diane Duane

Aside from the books mentioned here, Diane Duane wrote a fifth book in this series called "A Wizard's Dilemma."
11. What book is this from? "Apart from the one in the church tower, there were five clocks in the village that kept reasonable time, and my father owned one of them."

Answer: "The White Mountains," John Christopher

"The White Mountains" is part of the Tripod Series, three books that take place in the future, when mind-controlling aliens have taken over Earth, and are about the rebellion against the aliens.
12. What book is this from? "It began one day in summer about thirty years ago, and it happened to four children."

Answer: "Half Magic," Edward Eager

"Half Magic" is a children's classic that both young and old fantasy readers should read.
13. What book is this from? "In fairy-tales, witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks, and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy-tale. This is about REAL WITCHES."

Answer: "The Witches," Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl is another celebrated children's writer, and "The Witches" is another children's classic that all fantasy readers should read.
14. What book is this from? "'Too many', James shouted, and slammed the door behind him."

Answer: "The Dark is Rising," Susan Cooper

"The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper, and the rest of the series, is about the ancient battle against evil. The character in the above passage is the main character, Will's brother. This series is loosely tied in with King Arthur, as Will's Mentor is the famed Merlin, though in this series he is called Merriman Lyon.
15. What book is this from? "She could not remember a time when she had not known the story; she had grown up knowing it."

Answer: "The Hero and the Crown," Robin McKinley

Robin McKinley has written many good contributions to the Fantasy genre, including "The Blue Sword", "Spindle's End", and "Rose Daughter."
