Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Cymrians were the refugees who fled the Island of Serendair prior to its destruction." Who spoke this shocking and heart-breaking phrase to Rhapsody?

Answer: Llauron

Almost as soon as they were out of the root, Rhapsody knew they were no longer in Serendair just by looking at the stars. But she didn't realize how far away and how far out of time they had come. Serendair was destroyed when a twin of the star that sank half the island fell from the sky and submerged what remained from the first cataclysm.
2. When Merithyn landed on the unknown continent, he carved this phrase on the outside of the cave of the great wyrm, Elynsynos; "Cyme we inne fria fram the grip of deap to lif inne dis smylte land." What does the epithet translate to?

Answer: "Come we in peace from the grip of death to life in this fair land."

Elynsynos had morphed herself into the shape of an Ancient Seren, Merithyn's own race, so that he might find her attractive. They fell in love and the wyrm opened up her lands for the first time in the history of the Earth. Whereever the Cymrians from the First Fleet went, they engraved their offering of peace in homage to Elynsynos and her sea-faring lover, as well as markers for those fleets that came after.
3. Rhapsody witnessed a rare instance of compassion from Achmed when he said this to her: "It must have been difficult trying to adjust to the knowledge of how far out of time we are, all alone these past few months." What did she describe his voice as?

Answer: Uncharacteristically gentle

In chapter 25, Achmed tries to comfort Rhapsody when she tells them of Serendair's demise. She described his comments as uncharacteristically gentle because he had never treated her with anything else except indifference.
4. What angry character retorted with this phrase: "Actually, no, it didn't. In my experience they generally move out of the way of a charging horse. It's a good lesson to instill early"?

Answer: Anborn

A large black mount was barreling down the road on a direct path headed toward kids who were playing in the road. Rhapsody scattered them before they were trampled and encountered an angry man by the name of Anborn. She asked if he had seen the kids and this is the response he offered.
5. "Are you going to be my new mother?" Which of the following characters asked this of Rhapsody?

Answer: Melisande

This embarrassed both Rhapsody and Lord Stephen. Although Rhapsody couldn't stay in one place long enough to be a mother, she did ask to become their honorary Grandmother.
6. Jo refused to reveal her name to her friends. The first attempt, Rhapsody asked for her last name. What did Jo answer back?

Answer: "Bugger off."

Rhapsody quickly responded with, "Jo Bugger-Off. An odd name." And Achmed added, "It suits you." They found out that Jo had a sense of humor that matched theirs exactly.
7. While in Bethe Corbair, Achmed, Rhapsody, and Jo decided to split up and do some reconnaissance and even a little shopping. But before they parted company, Rhapsody told Jo to be careful with the money she had given her because it could be the last money they'd have for a while. Achmed then says, "This is a city. For you, money is as close as the nearest street corner. You have earning talents the rest of us don't have." What did he say he was referring to?

Answer: Her musical talents

Achmed and Grunthor are always teasing Rhapsody about her old profession, so this sentence could serve as a double meaning. And although Achmed claimed that he was referring to her musical talents, we all know that he meant both.
8. Ashe was astonished twice in one day, which was unheard of for him. He was shrouded in a misted cloak to hide his vibrations from those who may sense him, so when first Jo then Rhapsody surprised him, he was very stunned, which unhinged his tongue. Which of these insults did he slip by mistake?

Answer: "Maybe it's because I didn't pay first."

After checking Ashe for any signs of injury in his private area, Rhapsody makes a flirting comment about if he doesn't have any hard feelings toward her, then she must not have done her job right or that he was indeed injured. He then blurts the insult and causes her to storm off.
9. Who said the following: "Much blood spilled there will be"?

Answer: The Bolg

Achmed gets his point across to the simple, scavenger Bolg clans within the mountains of Canrif by attacking and killing some of their more fierce warriors with very little effort. Word spreads to the Bolg, causing them to fear whatever has come to take the mountain.
10. Achmed interrupts Rhapsody at a meeting with the midwives while searching for a key. She informs him that it is in the chamber pot under her bed. Achmed makes a face and accuses her of being around the Bolg too long. Rhapsody then informs him to ask her the next time he needs something and not to rifle around in her lingerie drawer. What is his response?

Answer: "And deny Grunthor one of the few small pleasures in life? Selfish thing."

One of the things that makes Elizabeth Haydon's work so entertaining is the way the characters interact like real people. The exchanges between Achmed, Rhapsody, and Grunthor are by far the most entertaining, whether it is comical or serious.
